Dominican named captain of Windward Island Volcanoes Cricket Team

Athanaze

Twenty-four-year-old left-handed batsman, Dominican, Alick Athanaze has been named Captain of the Windwards Volcanoes for the 2023 West Indies Championship.

The championship gives him the opportunity to begin his captaincy career for the Windward’s Volcanoes in their first match of the 2023 West Indies Championship against Trinidad & Tobago Red Force.

The game is expected to take place at the Grenada National Stadium, from January 31 to February 3, 2023.

The young Dominican cricketer made his List A debut for the West Indies Under-19s in the 2016–17 Regional Super50 on 25 January 2017.

That same year he made it to the West Indies squad for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

It was after that tournament that many in the cricket world took note of his talent since he was the leading run scorer and the second batsman from the West Indies to score two centuries in the same tournament.

Dubbed “the little magician from Dominica” by West Indies Cricket, he finished the tournament with 418 runs, just short of the record of 421 set by Donovan Pagon.

The International Cricket Countil labelled him as the rising star in West Indies cricket and said he has the potential to be the first Dominican to represent the senior Men’s side since Shane Shillingford in 2012.

After the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, he returned to Dominica to a triumphant welcome.

In June 2018, he made it to the Cricket West Indies B Team squad for the inaugural edition of the Global T20 Canada tournament.

His first-class debut was made for the Windward Islands in the 2018–19 Regional Four Day Competition on 6 December 2018 and in October 2019, he made it to the Windward Islands’ squad for the 2019–20 Regional Super50 tournament.

In an opinion piece published in November, 2022 on cricketwestindies.com entitled “ALICK ATHANAZE – A STAR IS BORN,” author  Machel St Patrick Hewitt wrote, “Having tasted West Indies A honours earlier this year vs Bangladesh A, Athanaze is clearly a player on the radar of selectors…”

It seems the future is bright for this young Dominican cricketer.

Why this guy is not on the West Indies senior team is beyond comprehension, considering that the current West Indies team is the weakest in all forms of world cricket. This means that Athanaze can perform better than most of the team members selected ahead of him. If West Indies want to make an impact as world beaters again, they have to start looking at fresh new talent and coach them properly as the English, Indians, Australians, Newzealanders etc. West Indies getting beat by Scotland, Ireland and other minnows is the biggest humiliation for Windies supporters.

Congratulations to Mr. Athanaze. This article indicates he’s Dominican, but for general knowledge, where are the other team members from??

Congrats and all the best to young Athanaze whose call up to the Senior West Indies Test team is almost a foregone conclusion.

With continued hard work and consistent mastery of opposition bowlers, there is every reason to believe this son of the soil will be able to translate regional promise into international prominence.

My sincere wish is that Athanaze and Tagenarine Chanderpaul will soon team up to give the West Indies a formidable opening pair reminiscent of Greenidge and Haynes.

Big mistake! Allow the guy to develop his game. That is too much responsibility for the Young man at this point in his career.

Take every opportunity you get to enhance your life. Don’t doubt a person’s ability to rise to the occasion.

Doubt whom you may but never don’t yourself, Mr.Athanaze.

I thought Dominica had no opportunities for young folks. What is going on there?

He is now 24 and yet to make west Indies men team with that kind of record. How are we to expect any young men in Dominica to waste time aspire to be a west indies cricketer? In an era when the caliber of players is nothing like it use to be this guy should have been on west indies A men team long. Look at Shanderpaul and others who were merely teenagers. Congratulations to you Athanaze but shame on WI cricket for not facilitating the rise to your full potential quicker. Something does not add up here.

Ah doh stress it. Just like Loblack, Irvine and the others suppressed Dominica’s sports by damaging the aspirations of the country boys in Dominica, so is West Indies Cricket is going to destroy his aspirations. He needs to go play IPL or County cricket if he wants to be recognized.

When white people recognize his skills, only then will dem “black” selectors will!

How is Tyrone Theophille doing? Is he getting any better or he still needs more time to rest after that terrible motor cycle accident?
