The Environmental Health Department of the Ministry of Health has made a strong appeal to residents of Castle Bruce, specifically those who have purchased cow meat in that community this week, not to consume that meat as it is believed to be unsafe and unhealthy.
In an announcement presented on Thursday, Chief Environmental Health Officer Tassie Thomas, advised those who have purchased the said meat to dispose of it by burial “immediately.”
She explained to Dominica News Online (DNO) during an interview on Friday, that the cow was treated with antibiotics, a procedure used before it’ was slaughtered for food, and which should last up to 28 days before the antibiotics can be out of the animal’s system.
However, Thomas said the farmer realized the cow was getting sick and although, “the vet warned him not to kill it, he still went ahead and killed it.”
“When we learnt of it, we picked up the carcass and the rest of the meat and we ordered that he [bury] it, because we couldn’t just dump it in the open,” she stated. “It’s either he burned it or buried it.”
Thomas said it appeared that the farmer had already sold that meat to a few people so it became necessary for the Environmental Health Department to make an announcement “to let them know that in case they had not eaten the meat that they should dispose of it immediately.”
She further explained that the problem with antibiotics and consuming meat with antibiotics at an early stage is that when it is given to the animal it is very much concentrated in the meat and it impairs the individual’s own system of fighting disease, “In the sense that if you are sick and it’s antibiotics that have to heal you the body is going to pose a resistance to the antibiotics the doctor has prescribed for you,” Thomas said. “Hence the reason for allowing the animal to go through the 28 days withdrawal period.”
Thomas went on to disclose that there is a penalty for that act and the farmer could have been charged and taken before the court.
However, according to Thomas, “he didn’t know and wasn’t aware of what he was getting himself into and the fact that we had confiscated almost all the meat, we just had to leave him alone.”
Some like it hot,
Some like it cold .
Some like it 9 days old…
A few years ago, a donkey was buried in a particular village. Five people with their names starting with letter “M”, went to dig up the donkey.
There was meat 🍖 selling all over the place….
The Castle Bruce farmer should be charged for selling sick 😫 meat to the public…
Tassie Thomas: “According to Thomas, “he didn’t know and wasn’t aware of what he was getting himself into and the fact that we had confiscated almost all the meat, we just had to leave him alone.” And this here takes the cake for one of the most asinine decisions and comments by a Public Officer. This action on her part is part of the problem in Dominica…..we do not respect laws and allow the system to work. Pure horse manure!
Tassie, herself, at the minimum, should be reprimanded for that reckless precedent-setting decision taken by Environmental Health.
Ignorance of the law is no excuse. Education and strict enforcement would held in eliminating much of this.
Well jean Castle Bruce fe-ni-bat.
1. They are graced with representation from Ma Pampalam
2. They put them in a soviet style building on their beloved playing field with constant poopoo backflow problems
3. The Cabal want to make sure they bury Loreen so they keep day-fon-saying and allegedly refusing to pay her
4. It is alleged that plain clothes officers are keeping watch over all Ada and Austin’s movement, watching their homes at night and even secretly installed trackers on their vehicles. All this after taking their licensed firearms.
5. Now contaminated cow meat is being served and sold?
Ebeh-chu- moon-Castle Bruce patay under the said cabal. But Skerro must remember the Bannis family large and Ada and Austin are loved so labar days are finally over in Castle Bruce. Neither Mr. He-She, or Ma Pampalam can soe-vay them. Remember I said that.
How he didn’t know and yet still it was said that the vet warned him?
He ignored the warnings because he wanted to get the money.
He should still be punished in some way. Don’t play with people life.
I just died from eating this cow Meat.. so who is going to pay for that now.
Environmental Health workers are jokers. Not even a slap on the wrist for the owner of the cow.
There exists a consistent pattern of disrespecting, disobeying, and defying law enforcement officials and challenging the rule of law. This farmer should be arrested for endangering the lives of the residents of this community. If the framer was warned but he continued to do what he wanted to do as he pleased, he should be held responsible for the violation; people could have died if the officials were not proactive and taken the decision they did. His punishment should not necessarily be jail, but he should be fined to send a strong message this type of behavior cannot and will not be accepted.
But if the vet warned him. He should be aware that the meat is not good for human consumption. He still went and kill it and sell it. So to some extent he is responsible.
I waiting for “ma boyd news” on that one…
Did she buy some…??
The ministry of death once again showed their ineptness and that of the government with this bull poopoo announcement.
First, the announcement is for residents of Castle Bruce. Look Dominica is small. So what if that meet was sold to a restaurant somewhere in Roseau or elsewhere and they decide to go by the “ nobody hears and nobody sees” game?
Secondly, the ministery of death says this in defense of the owner: “he didn’t know and wasn’t aware of what he was getting himself into and the fact that we had confiscated almost all the meat, we just had to leave him alone.” Wow! So he didn’t know? Now remember Ms Thomas said above “However, …the farmer realized the cow was getting sick and although, “the vet warned him not to kill it, he still went ahead and killed it.”
Are we really serious? Boy I don’t know the gentleman but I bet he is a Skerritite and when their supporters break the law they just have to call Skerrit and no damn charge or case
Todays Dominica is full of greedy and unscrupulous creatures like this farmer from Castle Bruce. The fact that he didn’t get fined or taken before court speaks volumes. Clearly another DLP supporter.
No one should be allowed to butcher any animal and sell its meat before thorough inspection. The consumer laws are too lax or not regularly enforced.
In other neighbouring countries, all animals for slaughter are taken to a government controlled abattoir, thoroughly inspected by a certified MD, then the meat is approved for sale. A farmer is automatically taken before a magistrate if he doesn’t adhere to this specific guideline.
We have a laissez-faire government concerning the protection of the citizens.Roosevelt sand his frenzied worshippers are too busy engaging in creative enrichment.
However, Thomas said, “he didn’t know and wasn’t aware of what he was getting himself into and the fact that we had confiscated almost all the meat, we just had to leave him alone.” This is BS!!
Ignorance of law is not an excuse. He was warned and still went ahead put public at risk. There is a criminal and civil case that should be pursued. What if someone already cooked and feed thier kids. That is grounds for civil law suite. This is the reason folks violate the laws and get away. Tarzy sounds like she is over her head
That farmer must have friends in high places. What nonsense is that? The man was warned not to kill the animal. He did so and sold some meat and Ms. Thomas is saying he wasn’t aware of what he was getting himself into?
Someone else would have been hung out to dry.
He didn’t know and you just had to leave him alone? What madness is this? He knew what he was doing and thought he could have gotten away. In my opinion, the farmer should have been charged and others like him would think twice. Thank God I do not eat meat!
Madness, desperation
Wowww be Careful
