The inter-schools debating competition of 2023 comes to a grand finale on Tuesday, April 4, with a debate between the two finalists; the Orion Academy and the Arthur Waldron SDA Academy.
The venue will be Emerald Movies in Roseau at 11:30 AM.
These two schools will face off against each other on the topic ‘the laws, policies, and institutions aimed at protecting children in Dominica from sexual exploitation and abuse are adequate’
“These schools will be vying for the title of debate champion and for the grand prize which is an all-expense paid trip to Saint Lucia for four people,” debate organizer Trudy Christian stated in an interview.
The initiative is spear-headed by Trudy Christian, long-time advisor of the Dominica State College’s Literary and Debating Society. A topic-writing committee, logistics committee, promotions committee and a group of debate officials (whose training has been facilitated by Dr. Kimone Joseph) have also been engaged.
Two of the goals of the competition were highlighted: to provide an opportunity for young people to gain public speaking experience and to re-introduce the culture of organized debating among the youth.
The debate began in January 2023 when various schools participated.
