Over 130 Dominican students benefit from Chinese scholarships

Charles says Dominica China relations have yielded benefits in education

More than 130 young Dominicans have, over the past ten years, received scholarships from the People’s Republic of China (PRC) to study in that country.

“This Dominica China relationship has to date enabled 135 young people to pursue studies in China at a cost of $19 Million,” Minister for Culture, Youth and Sports, Justina Charles stated at the opening ceremony of the first ever Dominica-China Youth Friendship Week which was held at the Orion Academy in Bath Estate on Monday.

“Can we imagine for the majority of these students would never have traveled to that part of the world, would never be able to finance their studies outside of that offer, and would never be able to accomplish their academic dreams?”, she asked.

According to the Minister, such relations provide opportunities for development for the country’s young people.

“This, for us, provides development opportunities for young people in whose hands the future of this nation lies. All of this clearly demonstrate the level of respect and trust that the government of the People’s Republic of China (PRP) has in our Prime Minister. It also clearly demonstrates the interest of the government in the well-being of our citizens,” she noted.

Charles said activities such as these will provide the chance for forging closer relationships between the two countries and will provide an opportunity for the young people who are thinking of furthering their studies in the PRC to transit much easier.

The minister also reiterated Dominica’s support for the one China Policy.

Meantime President of the National Youth Council of Dominica Jahsiah Benoit said the week will be a dynamic one.

“It’s going to be a dynamic week,” he stated, “It’s the first time that we are going to be having this type of activity and we are very grateful.”

The week will be observed under the theme: Celebrating 10 years of Harmonious Friendship.

Activities for the week include the performance and recording of a Chinese skit at the Orion Academy and the St. Johns Academy, a movie night at the Krazy Kokonutz on Wednesday, a table tennis competition on Thursday, a moon cake eating and Chinese cuisine activity on Friday at the Good Will Secondary and will close on Saturday with a football tournament at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium.

Oh my another communist youth council? Chairman Mao would be happy. I suspect the labour party will replace the parrot, with the dragon on the flag, as a true sign of friendship, and minster charles will be speaking cantonese and miandarin, while the youth use chopsticks to eat their broth

Here is evidence, educating students not working..
Skerrit say… My fellow Dominicans. Today Monday, 22nd September, 2014, the Government of Dominica issued a $20.0 million 91-day Treasury bill on the Regional Government’s Securities Market (RGSM). The security was competitively auctioned which resulted in an oversubscription of $7.2 million and a very favourable interest rate of 1.24 percent. This is the lowest interest rate received on the RGSM to date.
When you go to the ECCB website
    http://eccb-centralbank.org/
The rate on Sept 23rd 2014 is 1.240%

And why can’t he/she become a good dr.. Because of the language. If in 2014, you can ask such a silly question, no wonder you are not qualified to be part of the students who are on their way to a brighter future.. In Cuba what is the language…m

Yes I am educated. Obviously you are not!

        September 23, 2014

Then what do you have to say about those who studied in Cuba in spanish? I know graduates from Cuba who have become very successful doctors and even went on to Harvard. So maybe you need to open your eyes.

      • September 24, 2014

I don’t know whether you’re saying our young people can’t learn Mandarin well enough to study effectively in it, or whether you’re saying that Chinese medical schools don’t produce good physicians, but either way you’re flat out wrong.

Close to 1000 Dominicans have benefited from Cuban scholarships over the last 35 years!
The chief vet, CMO, Psychiatrist, Minister, environmentalist, architects, engineers, dentists, and the list goes on, are graduates from Cuban universities.
So what’s the big deal with Chinese scholarships in ten years. Cuba no longer dishes out as before so they longer find favour with the opportunists down here. Venezuela is going through its own piece of abandonment bit by bit. Now is China and Morrocco.

Over 130 Dominican students benefit from Chinese scholarships, pardon me, but this is stupidity. It is not the amount of students who study that matter but the quality of teaching and learning which has sunk to abysmal depths, this is reflected in the vast amount of young people we have who identify nonsense in Government, we have no free and honest debate about anything that truly matters, example Linton private las vegas trip as opposed to serious economic reform for Dominica.
