16 Caribbean leaders to attend royal wedding; Dominica not on list

Prince William and Kate Middleton

Within days from the sure-to-be spectacular occasion, the official guest list for Prince William and Kate Middleton’s royal wedding has been released with some 16 Caribbean leaders and Heads of State to attend.

However no leader from Dominica is on the list.

According to a release from Clarence House – the official residence of The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall and home of Princes William and Harry the Caribbean leaders are as follows:

-The Governor-General of Antigua and Barbuda
-The Governor-General of The Bahamas and Lady Foulkes
-The Governor-General of Belize
-The Governor-General of Barbados
-The Governor-General of Jamaica
-The Governor-General of St Christopher and Nevis
-The Governor-General of St Lucia
-The Governor-General of St Vincent and the Grenadines and Lady Ballantyne
-The Prime Minister of The Bahamas and Ms Delores Miller
-The Prime Minister of Barbados
-The Prime Minister of Saint Lucia and Mrs. Rosalia Nestor King
-The Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and The Grenadines and Mrs. Ralph Gonsalves
-The Premier of The British Virgin Islands and Mrs. Ralph O’Neal
-The Premier of the Cayman Islands and Mrs. Kerry Bush
-The Premier of Bermuda
-The Chief Minister of Montserrat

The wedding ceremony is expected to take place on Friday at Westminister Abbey and 1,900 guests are to attend. Some 650 of those guests have also been invited to the lunchtime reception at Buckingham Palace, hosted by the Queen; and 300 will attend a dinner at the palace, given by Prince Charles.

Authorities speculate that some two billion viewers across the globe will tune in to see Prince William and Middleton exchange vows.

When Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer marry in 1981 it is said 750 million watched that ceremony.

    April 28, 2011

Dominicans really ought to grow up. Just reading the comments on this website would make most people never want to come here, never mind invite a Dominican to a wedding. Dominicans will never move forwards so long as they continue to think and behave backwards. We live in the 21st century now, not the 19th. Many of the views on this website (not just this news story) are narrow-minded, xenophobic, ignorant and largely devoid of fact. We live in a global community now. Dominicans need to educate themselves, open their minds and hearts, and hit the refresh button before they become completely isolated, utterly irrelevant, and entirely dependent on a diminishing number of hand-outs from the very people they are all too ready to insult and criticise. It’s sad and embarrassing.

All Read William McLawrence comments above as well as this from The Master Civic man. Trinidad and Guyana was also NOT invited. Why? Because they have Presidents as their heads of states…just as Dominica.

The list of invitees from the Caribbean are either present British colonies or former British colonies who have “retained” the Queen as “Head of State” through the Governor-General.

We should all have learned that in civics class in primary school.

They should be refused dialogue and entry to those countries that their PM’s were not invited. I hope the PM will never make the mistake of inviting them to Dominica. Tell them to keep away! Dominica does not want their tourist visit and money.
In any case, Great Britain has not helped Dominica. What was done was to bring a lot of prejudice and white “color” ones to Dominica in those days and taking their produces, making them poorer. This is a good reason why some of the West Indian islands seceded from Great Britain.
Remember when one’s skin had to be white to work in a bank and not that they were more intelligent than you and/or others?
I have always stated that if Dominica had remained French, it would have been in a better economical/financial position. Take note of Guadeloupe and Martinique.

Dominica is a Sovereign Republic and would not be invited because the Queen is not our Head of State. Not being invited should not matter, it is not as if Prince William was getting married to a Dominican.

  23. Cassandra
    April 27, 2011

All other considerations aside. The legality of the appointment of Mr. Skerrit as our P.M. is still to be decided by the courts. Inviting him in his capacity as “P.M.” of Dominica would be tantamount to prejudging the ultimate court’s ruling. English protocol is too well versed in diplomacy to become embroiled in such an issue and the advice may well have been “if not sure, don’t do it” .

PS. At present we only have an “acting High Commissioner ” in London ( Ms. J. Charles) and I’m not aware that an invitation has been extended to her.

      April 27, 2011

Not because you have a good vocabulary means you are smart. Stop trying to fool the people. If you are so intelligent as a want to sound, you would know full well that this has nothing to do with the prime minister’s citizenship issue. Dominica is a republic and has no links to England unlike the other stated countries.

      • Cassandra
        April 27, 2011

You are right. We are a republic and Mr. Skerrit would not have been invited on grounds of not being the P.M. of a “realm”. I did however, pre-qualify my statement with;” All other considerations aside”. The fact that his status as the “P.M.” is, to say the least questionable and therefore to be determined by a court of law is unquestionable and merely states a fact.It certainly would have been a consideration to be taken into account in deciding whether or not to extend an invitation to him. Of course we have links, and very strong ones at that with England. Just ask the many returnees who came back home to settle who made their living in that country, the lawyers who qualified & practice here under the English legal system… and tell me who’s face adorns our banknotes?

When I read these comments on DNO it simply tells me how we have been psychologically molested by our white masters. I cannot believe in the 21st century we are so concerned about being invited to a wedding that has been funded by sucking the blood of tax payers money. It is a shame!

These people are going through an economic recession, millions have lost their jobs yet people are crying over a wedding that cost all that money? It is pathetic and sad! When will we learn as a people.

Secondly, why are we making everything political? Blaming ourselves, saying it’s Skerrit fault blah blah blah. We have really been molested psychologically. We behave like a battered woman who blames herself everytime the man beats her, it is sad.

My people no one from Dominica is on the list, that should not shake our dignity and self worth as a people. We have to focus on surviving this almost global economic crisis going on right now; we have more important things to take care of than an insignificant wedding. We Dominicans of African descent are Kings and Queens in our own right. Let us love each other and build each other up rather than calling each other names. This maypwee is unhealthy for us. Let us prove to the world by our comments that we are a civilized and educated people.

Simply while Dominica, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago are all members of the Commonwealth, these three states are Sovereign Republics with a President as Head of State. All the other countries listed are not republics and have Governor Generals since they still recognize the Queen of England as their Head of State. The Governor General represents the Queen. Did you also observe that Suriname, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti are not listed. Is there a big deal with Dominica not being listed? I am sure they may have been invited…

The correct name for our country is the Republic of the Commonwealth of Dominica, for Trinidad and Tobago it is the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and for Guyana itis the Co-operative Republic of Guyana.

Our Head of State is the President of Dominica, His Excellency Dr. Nicholas J. O. Liverpool.

    I hope this helps…

TRINIDAD and Tobago will be represented at the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton by this country’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Garvin Nicholas. The wedding takes place on Friday at Westminster Abbey in London.

It may well be that since like Trinidad, the Queen is not the head of state, that Dominica is being represented by some other diplomatic rep like the High Commissioner to the UK.

But as for the wild speculation that it is a snub because of Skerritt’s politics and Dominica’s political affiliations with Libya and the like – come on now! If that was the case, how would Gonsalves be invited?

No big deal President Obama wasn’t invited either!

  53. Interesting
    April 27, 2011

Oh Really!? Is that so? I must have a talk with Kate about this. But don’t worry I will be there, I will represent the country. I mean Kate and I have been best friends since college so… But I doubt that Kate would want a 1800 people that she doesn’t know at her wedding though. We are most likely doing her a favour by not attending.

  54. NOT NICE

    April 27, 2011

what is the significance of Dominica being on the list and just to point out, all the leaders invited are from nations where the queen is still the Head of State through he representative the Governor General…

  57. Educating you
    April 27, 2011

According to Buckingham Palace only heads of states and heads of governments who are married can attend any Royal wedding or invited for an official visit to the palace. In addition there was a raffle for selection of attending commonwealth countries since its not practical to invite them all. Hope this clears the air on the matter. I am a former employee of the commonwealth secretariat

    • babygirl

amen to that. they did not know that. but thanks for educating them.

That makes no sense because our Head of State is very much married. So being a former employee of the c/wealth secretariat, come better than that

      • hhmmmm

yow yow… understand the difference between a commonwealth and republic, and come better than that

    • garfunkel
      April 27, 2011

Educate yourself. The Governor General of St Lucia, Dame Pearlette Louisy is definitely NOT married and has been invited. I suspect the raffle of which you write must have taken place in your head. Your “knowledge” of Buckingham Palace protocol is so off that I am left to conclude that this may be the reason why you no longer work at the Commonwealth Secretariat.

If you state that only heads of states, etc. who are married are invited to the wedding, this is downright hypocritical and prejudice. Do you recall that Prince William lived with Kate for some years? I was shocked too, that he, who probably will be King someday would be cohabiting with that woman he now chooses as his wife who may be Queen someday. Is it any wonder that some people oppose the monarchy and for other reasons?
Let me further inform you that dearly beloved Princess Diana who sadly met her demise in such a manner which grieved the entire world (no exception myself to this day) had to prove that she was a virgin prior to marrying Prince Charles who was no innocent man as he was dating that woman Camilla.
Oh yes! Princess Diana had to be examined by a doctor to confirm that she was a virgin and to be worthy, as a virgin, of marrying Prince Charles. This makes my blood boil to this day.
Kate did not have to go through this humiliating process. The Queen already knew that she was not a virgin.
The Queen also knew that Camilla was not a virgin as she was already married and was dating Prince Charles. What if the Queen passed on and soon enough Prince Charles became King with that woman Camilla as his wife, as Queen? I hope this never happens.
Now I am not against the Queen. However, they are a bunch of hypocrites. Or is it solely Prince William?
Practically the entire so-called royalty dating back to Henry VIII and even previously are a bunch of hypocrites, placing themselves above people while they lived such immoral lives.
Are you not aware that they have placed a curse on themselves and future so-called royalty generations until the end of time, if they last that long?
Today, during a relevant discussion, I informed someone that while the Queen is rich and lives in a mansion, she was not better brought up, disciplined and respectfully than I was. Many of you can say that about yourself.
If this is true who are they not to invite those who are not married?
The Dominica PM should not care if he was not invited to the wedding. One, Dominica is now independent of Great Britain. Two, it will be too expensive attending such a wedding. I also wonder if the PM really cares that he was not invited. I would not make a fuss about this one.

Well Well Well, Please fellow Dominicans, don’t allow the world to think that we are sooo uneducated here in Dominica. The list is not a personal list but one made up as per constitution. Again, our head of state is a President, making us a Republic .

  60. Dominican for sure
    April 27, 2011

Aye “we” Dominicans can act stupid sometimes, as some Persons have explained, and the new item on Carib Update news stated Dominica will not be represented because the Queen is NOT our head of state, we have our own head of State which is the President – in that case we are more a Republican State. I mean thats easy as 1-2-3, so why all the talk about ” the rest of the world listening to what happening in Dominica” and ” the queen doesnt know us” etc…thats rubbish…the reasoning is CLEAR!!

  61. Cerberus
    April 27, 2011

We are in good company. The two previousd P.M.’s of the U.K., Tony Blair and Gordon Brown have not been invited either. You can make of this what you will!

    April 27, 2011

The only reason why the political leader of dominica was not invited is because of our constitution. The president of Dominica is the head of state and not the Queen of Enland like in the other states. where there is a governor and not a president like we have. thats why you dont see Guyana, Trinidad etc there because we all have presidents as our head of state.

    • Papa Dom
      April 27, 2011

In short the queen is not the ultimate head of state. That aside, there are countries which had nothing to do with the queen whose heads have been invited. I do not think we should read anything political into this.

  66. politbureau
    April 27, 2011

most of those countries listed are still at least nominally” colonies’ since the Queen of England is still their head of state represented by the Governors General. The others like Montserrat are still overseas territories .So it is reasonably good manners they be invited.Trinidad , Guyana , Dominica are republics , no queen`s representatives in those territories.
