19-year-old charged with arson at St. Joseph police station

Niguel Anthony, a 19-year-old male from the community of St. Joseph is now on remand at the Dominica State Prison following a charge of arson preferred against him by the police.

During the wee hours of September 12, 2022, a certain section of the St. Joseph police station as well as the police vehicle for that station were allegedly set ablaze.

Following investigations by the police, Anthony was arrested and charged. He appeared before the Roseau Magistrate court on September 19, where the charge was read to him.

The accused was not required to enter a plea since the charge of arson is an indictable offense and is expected to be tried at the High court of Justice before a Judge and jury.

At Monday’s hearing, Police Prosecutor Inspector Laville, did not object to bail but requested that such be granted with a proper surety.

Presiding Magistrate Michael Laudat set the bail sum at $50,000.00, however, Anthony was unable to present a suitable surety to the court and was consequently remanded in custody at the Dominica State Prison until such time.

Preliminary Inquiry (PI) in the matter is set for January 26, 2023, at the St. Joseph Magistrate court to determine if there is enough evidence for the matter to be tried at the High Court.

These quick arrests are usually false leads. Police excited to “solve” a case to save face.

I support lbo France 100% about the public and police.Police public relation is gone.I remember when the public and police lived side by side.Cases were easily solved because of information by the public
So for the very first time stupidity is leaving Ibo’s head via his ears.It was the blue boss who told his supporters in Salisbury stone the police. They are not only stoning the police, they are also trying to BBQ them.

How do you want the police to interact with these thugs? By grinning their teeth to them, by smiling to them, by laughing at their nonsense, by tolerating their garbage? Man, if you do not have anything sensible to say and write, you would be well-advised to keep your mouth shut and go on about your daily life.

This charge and arrest of an alleged 19 year old speaks of the predicament that Roosevelt Skerrit and his DLP clapping ministers have put our country in. It means our young people are frustrated and feel their future is already gone.
This young man was not even in his mothers womb when the DLP got in power in 2000 and, he was in his mothers womb when Roosevelt Skerrit cheated his way to the primeministership. So this young boy is a child of Skerrit and all he has seen is the destruction of Dominica day after day to the point that ALL Hope is gone now.
Although they have arrested and charged a young man with the crime I am still not convinced that the crime was not committed by their own insider since they are all upset with the directions Skerrit has taken our Isle of beauty to but they are all scared of showing Skerrit that they are upset

No one should support arson of public properties. This can lead to total anarchy in society.

However, this should be a clear indication that the public or a section of the public is very much dissatisfied and irate about the manner the law men interact with the citizens.

Remember law enforcement needs information from the citizens to solve crimes and keep the country safe.

I also hope that the right culprit is in custody and this young man is not being used as a scapegoat to quell the public’s anxiety.
