20 thousand Chinese vaccine doses arrive in Dominica; Melissa Skerrit takes first shot

Melissa Skerrit, wife of PM Skerrit, receives the first jab of Chinese vaccine in Dominica

Twenty thousand doses of the Chinese state-owned Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine have officially been handed over to the government of Dominica courtesy of the People’s Republic of China.

At the handing over ceremony on  March 4, 2021, which was held at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit expressed his gratitude, pointing out that with growing concerns about larger nations promoting a counter-productive vaccine nationalism, China’s commitment to making its vaccine more accessible to developing countries like Dominica, is an encouraging and refreshing difference.

“Once again, China has proven to be a good and reliable friend to Dominica,” he said. “Over the past 16 years, Dominica has had many areas of cooperation with the People’s Republic of China  but today’s contribution holds major significance as it is geared  towards helping all of us in Dominica successfully fight this dreaded pandemic and nurse our country back to some normalcy and a greater level of economic certainty.”

The prime minister said such donation from China complements Dominica’s ongoing efforts to achieve its goal of being the small island among the top countries with the highest rates of inoculation in the world and will complement ongoing efforts to achieve this goal.

He stated that during the height of the pandemic when countries were fighting and hoarding masks and other Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) it was the People’s Republic of China who came to Dominica’s rescue and sent us the first shipment of protective gear for our front line workers.

“When ventilators became a scarce commodity and test kits were in high demand that only the more powerful countries could afford to purchase or manufacture for their domestic use, it was the People’s Republic of China that looked out for Dominica and sent us fifteen new ventilators to ensure that Dominica was well equipped in the event our people need to be ventilated,” Skerrit recounted, adding, “The government of the People’s Republic Of China has continued to supply masks, test kits, and other PPE to ensure that Dominicans remain safe.”

He said just last week, a total of one hundred thousand N95 and surgical masks were sent to Dominica from China, as well as thousands of test kits.

The Prime Minister gave his government’s commitment to exploring every option in ongoing efforts to protect both lives and livelihoods.

Prime minister Skerrit expressed his delight at the large number of citizens who have already gotten vaccinated since the rollout started on February 22, 2021, and despite the two different types of vaccines now available to the general public- the first being the AstraZeneca, donated from the Government of India last month, called on citizens to not let their guard down.

He said the country is well on track to vaccinate up to 78 percent of the adult population by the end of the summer.

The representative of the Chinese Government, Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of The People’s Republic of China, LUO Songtao, said the vaccine donation is one of the agreements reached between the President of China, Xi Jinping, and Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit during a phone conversation on January 25, 2021.

His Excellency Songtao said China decided to make the donation to Dominica despite the increase in domestic need which he says highlights the solidarity, friendship and partnership between the two countries and their people.

The Charge d’Affaires reiterated China’s stated intention to continue to  do its utmost to support Dominica noting, “I believe that our friendship and partnership will also continue to grow and prosper as we fight against the pandemic  hand in hand to build a global community of health for all.”

He also pledged China’s commitment to provide assistance and support to other developing countries and to work tirelessly to make their vaccines accessible and affordable to people around the world.

“As of now China has pledged vaccine assistance to 53 countries and it is exporting vaccines to 27 countries…this has demonstrated China’s determination to fight against the virus,” the Chinese diplomat stated.

Following the handing over ceremony, the wife of the prime minister and parliamentary representative for the Roseau Central Constituency, Melissa Poppone Skerrit became the first person in Dominica to receive the Sinopharm Covid-19 Vaccine, followed by Minister of Public Works and the Digital Economy, Cassanni Laville.

Health Minister Dr. Irvin Mcintryre, has indicated that although the Sinopharm vaccine is on our shores, people will continue to receive the Astrazeneca vaccine, as it has an earlier expiration date.

Regardless of the type and origin of vaccines, the various variants (South Africa, Brazil, UK, etc.) are of particular concern because they contain a mutation which appears to offer resistance to antibodies people gain from vaccination or previous infection.

This raises the question: how many extra doses of modified vaccines will it take to counter the increasing number of variants. Chances are that we will have arms like pin-cushions!

China has vaccines to donate because no country on earth wats there vaccine. The thing has to many side effects (over 50 ). That’s why they can donate it because no body wants there crap. And how are we so sure is the Chinese one she took? It could have been the Indian one ( British one made under licence in India ) and they just telling people is the Chinese one she took

Why was the nurse not wearing gloves? Gloves are required every time when administering injections, drawing blood, etc., especially now.

A photo of First Lady Melissa Skerrit taking the Chinese vaccine is of no moment.

She and her husband have the vast majority of Dominicans living in dirt poor conditions while the Chinese are gobbling up the construction jobs, taking over the retail (small & medium business) sector, employing only people of their ethnicity and buying up large swaths of real estate.

The manner in which things are trending, Dominicans will awake one day and be greeted with the news that two Chinese are in charge, one as prime minister and the other president of Dominica.

Also, Roseau renamed China Town, the official language changed from English to Mandarin, the forty (40 ) weekly working hours changed to eighty four (84) , that is, from 6 am to 6 pm, seven days per week.

Sounds farfetched? Well under the Skerrits all things (bad) are possible

Nurse Lewis I have been following you on the vaccination wagon and noticed that you do not wear gloves. Why? Remember you have to take care of you first as your family still needs you.

Now she will get the second dose “close to wallhouse” at the appropriate time.    . Let me see if Penny G will take the second dose. I know the Lil Vet-Tere say no one coming and bectay his Wadadli grafted mango unless they take the vaccine so the valley area Mandingo will have to be third in line if he intends to land on VC Bird Ruaway airport currently in the partial posession of the Lil Vet-Tere. If you still confuse ask Ma Boyd for explanation please because she have all the HOT beff.
