UPDATE: Accident near Bioche results in one death

Scene of the accident on Friday

Police have confirmed that a worker on a construction truck which ran off the main road near Bioche Friday afternoon, has died.

He has been identified as 42-year-old Winston Lewis of Massacre.

Dominica News Online (DNO) reported earlier that the accident involved a truck with Chinese and Dominican workers aboard. It ran off the road down an incline and into a gulley.

The accident occurred about 2:30 pm on Friday.

An eyewitness told DNO earlier that a worker on the vehicle may have died since the truck could be seen on top of him.

The police have confirmed the dead man is a Lewis and not the driver of the truck.  DNO understands that a number of Chinese workers have been injured.

It is so sad to hear the death of my friend Winston Lewis.
He befriended me when I came to Dominica many years ago.
We both worked together at Brake & Clutch in the early years.
My heart goes out to Ma Rennie and Michael not forgetting his son and girlfriend.
Rest in peace my friend and God be with you.

Can we at one time leave politics and negativism out of this and deal with the great loss of life that has occurred. A son, father, friend, colleague, community man, and citizen has passed in this tragic incident. Let us offer our love and compassion to those who will be affected by this loss. While at the same time wish the other workers God’s guidance as they continue the project.

Wew need to stop these pettiness, everyone might not think or talk alike, but let’s agree to disagree
in construstive critizen. Let us stop responding negativly, and up-lift each other. If Dominica goes down, we go down, if it goes up, we go up. Because, is not the island ,is we the people that live there that make Dominica,”DOMINICA. Lets pray for the unfortunate, we are all in this together. ‘ONE LOVE’, PEACE, HOPE, JOY, IN CHRIST.

To the Lewis family, may God give you comfort in this time of sorrow. You may be asking ,Does Jesus care when your heart is pained, and your way grows weary and long?I want to tell you yes he cares. Lie on his shoulder and cry, he will bring comfort to your soul.

I will miss Winston’s loud singing of Lucke Duby and other conscious music. He loved to sing and although I never told him, I enjoyed listening to him being so happy. I also loved his loud, open communication with his little boy. I pray for this little boy. He will miss his dad a lot. His dad really loved him. So So sad.

My deepest sympathy to the family who lost their loved one and to those who were injured. But then again is now skerrit going and fix the road, seeing that there were CHINESE involved. That’s the only time things get done.

      October 20, 2012

oh my God! At a time like this when families and friends are mourning do you think your sarcastic statement is called for???? Can’t you leave “Skerrit” out of it for once and allow persons with positive comments to express themselves???

  18. October 19, 2012

Sympathy to the family of the deceased, and prayers to those injured. God be with you all. Must be a little more careful. You may be accustomed to the roads but these roads are dangerous.

Sorry to read of the accident and that someone died. How sad. I am wondering what caused the accident. Drivers must proceed cautiously especially around corners, on a rainy day and if because roads are smooth. Drive at a certain acceptable speed.
It is time for the government to institute new road regulations and speed limits on every road throughout Dominica. People are being injured and lives are lost due to drivers’ recklessness.
Insurance companies, you too should have a say in this for you are responsible for recompense to those who are injured and die through drivers’ negligence in addition to those whose vehicles are damaged or are a write-off. In some cases because they hold insurance policies. It should be mandatory that every vehicle owner procure vehicle insurance.
Death comes like a thief in the night. May the soul of the departed rest in peace. May God console his family and grant them strength as they mourn his loss.

I was on the Scene of this accident shortly after it Happened. The Engine of the truck was racing and it made a big plume of smoke .The frustrating part was that there was nothing that could be done to free the Trapped Man.His Co-workers were very distressed about this and I felt their emotions because likewise there was nothing I could do except to ask them if they were ok .Some were still in very much pain but out of concern for their coworker they were not thinking of themselves .Yes it was a very sad situation and Condolences to the family of the Gentleman who lost His life .
