The Junior Chamber International of Pointe-a-Pitre came to the aid of two young Haitian women by providing them with prosthesis after they lost a leg in the January 12, 2010 earthquake.

Nirva St Louis, 25, and 22-year-old Jelia Denis, both hospitalized in Baseterre, Guadeloupe since January 27, were on July 8, 2010, presented with the walking apparatus at a presentation at Ortho Caraibe Medical Center in Baie Mahault, in the presence of World President of Junior Chamber International, Roland Kwemain and President of French Junior Chamber International, Nicolas Lefevere.

President of the Guadeloupe Junior Chamber International, Laurie Lincertin said her Organization worked tirelessly over the past months to bring hope to the two young ladies, after their traumatizing experience in the earthquake which destroyed their country earlier this year.

“We searched for partners and we found; the medical center decided to make the prosthesis free of charge, as its contribution to this worthy cause,” Lincertin.

“We will continue to work to give young people hope, by helping them to believe in themselves, by creating the proper environment and giving the opportunity to be something positive for themselves and their families,” she remarked.

Both St Louis and Denis said they were extremely happy to be able to walk again. They were very depressed when they learnt that they would be amputated, but new hope has just revived their spirits, knowing that they will be able to function normally without the assistance of crutches.

Junior Chamber International has its Headquarters in St Louis Missouri, and is an international community of citizens between the ages of 18 to 40 with the aim and purpose of creating positive changes in the world. It is in 115 countries with 6,000 localities and over 200, 000 members.
