56-year-old man dies after fall in Penville

Peterson Laville of Penville is now dead from what villagers believe are injuries sustained from a fall off a wall on August 15 during Fete Penville.

An eyewitness report of the incident says the 56-year-old man, who died at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) eight days after the incident, was supposedly intoxicated when he fell asleep on the ledge of a wall, about 9:30 p.m. on the evening in question.

Records at the Portsmouth Fire and Ambulance Service indicate that personnel responded to the scene at 23:00hrs. A resident familiar with the situation said the call to the ambulance department was made moments after the incident occurred.

The eyewitness report says the man was unconscious after the fall near “Giant’s” shop/bar, and while waiting on the ambulance to arrive, he was aided by a female Roseau firefighter and another individual. Villagers of Vielle Casse later joined in assisting them

Laville was initially taken to the Reginald F. Armour Hospital in Portsmouth and later transferred to the PMH.

Another fatal accident due to the excess intake of alcohol. But will the rest of us who drink capture the warning of careless use of alcoholic drinks and try to have fun with a sober mind? I wonder!

Again, I would like to express my understanding that alcohol distort the brain function, causing our minds to malfunction as well. If this man’s mind was in proper function, he would have realize the dangers of sitting on an open wall to relax his legs.

The influence of alcohol puts a person in an extreme relaxed state, as if he/she had received an anaesthetic before surgery. In that state that person have no idea what is happening to him/her or around him/her. That person wakes up the next day with absolutely no memory of what happened in his/her existence during the period of his/her extreme drunkenness. I know, because I have witnessed the situation and reaction in my father and my brother, for example.

People of Dominica, we have got to understand that alcohol and drugs is not the answer to our afflictions of Life. Yes, I know that most people who became addicted to alcohol or drugs, used those substances at first, because they felt that they relieved their pain somehow or someway. But that relief is only temporary. The influence of the substances subsides, and people are back with all the pain and troubles of existence.

Our answer comes from God alone, as we learn to apply faith, which influences us to trust and obey Him. As human beings we are doomed to experience dark, terrible, treacherous hours, but we cannot challenge those dark hours through our own strength.

We need God’s comfort of Peace and Joy. Jesus said: “Come to me all of you who are carrying heavy loads, and I will give your rest”. We need the Wisdom and Understanding of God’s Holy Spirit. We can live a vibrant Life without drugs, alcoholic, and even sexual relationship. But we have got to learn to recognize God’s instincts–the instincts of His Holy Spirit–who teaches us how to live a Life of Harmony with Him, because of His Love in the Person of Jesus Christ.

My sympathy goes to family and friends of this dead man.
