Posted 3:39 a.m.:
A vehicular accident on the Goodwill Public Road in the vicinity of Public Works in Roseau early Saturday morning has left two people injured.

The accident occurred between 2:30 and 3:00 a.m.

The female passenger was earlier transported to the Princess Margaret Hospital. However, the driver, Derrick Theophile of Fortune, was trapped in the vehicle for about one hour. Fire and ambulance officials succeeded in removing him from the vehicle at 4:28 a.m.

Derrick Theophile was removed from the wreckage at exactly 4:28 am.

Theophile was apparently heading into Roseau on a Nissan Sunny registration PF 848 when he lost control of the vehicle and struck a light pole.

Onlookers at the scene spoke to the trapped driver while they awaited the arrival of the ambulance and rescue services. Theophile was seen talking on his cell phone, while he remained trapped.

The Fisheries Division worker was subsequently transported to the hospital, after being removed.

The Goodwill Public Road has been the scene of several fatal and serious accidents over the years.

On December 30, Neil Karam of Roseau lost his life in an accident there after the Toyota  Celica GT-Four he was traveling in struck a light pole. Twenty-three-year-old Clinton Titre – the driver – was hospitalized following the accident.

Hmmm..hmmm..wat is really goin on in this lil nature isle? The reason y so many accidents in that particular area is becuz they feel that when they approach that piece of stretch..is a high way…not seeing the danger that lye ahead. Some pple think that speeding is driving….wat could possible be the rush? I dnt understand. Furthermore the way they give out license now a dayz is amazing…last wk u see a learner goin 20miles per hr…next wk she/he is a holder of a drivers license, and u dnt want to see the speed…it’s like a show off thing. Take ur time u will arrive to ur destination..when u speed u get out of control..n wit lil experience u panic and that might just cost u ur life n others.

Becareful drivers……think be u doh anything stupid….dnt try to impress society…be urself n love urself!

The conduct of our young drivers, not chauffeurs, on our roads is the result of how they were tutored – speed up, move on, you wasting time on the stop line, move fast………..The business of any one can be a driving instructor must cease and the Nation establish a driving school with experienced persons as tutors. I am sorry for what is likely to happen when the improvement of all major roads completed. De police must be pro active in respect of seat belts and use of cell phones while driving.

D/cans please hear my cry – yet another accident….

A qualified Driving Instructor of 32 years experience in England, who recently visited family and friends in D/ca and this is what I observed:

D/can drivers end up involved in road traffic accidents due to the lack of care by other road users. In numerous cases, the surge in accidents fastly becoming a part of D/ca life can be avoided just by learning some essential defensive driving techniques. There are a variety of ways of incorporating defensive driving into one’s every day driving life, which can help keep one safe on the road.

Broadly speaking, this is a type of driving that helps steer you away from problems on the road. By combining the techniques of defensive driving, you can save not only fuel and your tyres, but most importantly, the lives of others.

The obvious descriptions of a good driver – being: cautious, considerate, alert, skilled, courteous and many more all have their own merit. However, defensive driving is much more than that, as it requires you to take a psychological approach to driving and educate yourself on not only your own driving ‘triggers’, but those of others.

Many D/cans who end up involved in road accidents, in the main, the root cause is simply emotions and distractions. If you’re feeling aggressive, stressed, competitive, lazy or fatigued, your judgements can be drastically altered. Your reaction time to potential hazards may be inferior also, as well as your emotions heightening you to potentially act in a way you normally wouldn’t.

All of these emotional triggers can be dangerous for a driver and that’s why it’s important to recognise them and deal with them. Defensive driving must take into account not only what can be seen, but also what can’t. Look for the hazards even before they arise and be ready to deal with them correctly.

    Patience is a virtue

    • oh no
      May 4, 2010

the design of the road has nothin to do with it. accidents were happening there long before it was fixed up. the posts in the center have nothin to do with it either. they road is wide enough for the vehicles to drive on, so there is no excuse for people to not see the post. even if the post was not there, this man had to be in accident and it would’ve happened anywhere. what has to happen will happen

It’s sets a terrible precedent for those who are not friends.
There are just too many ills at this time…..
a man can shoot another man in the face and not spend one hour or one day in the cell, but a guy was seen in the area of a robbery and spent days in the cell…….turns out he lives in the area, while he was in the cell another house nearby got robbed…..isn’t it all a JOKE?

sleeping or not that car must have been going at least 80 miles per hour any idiot could see that from how extensive the vehicle was damaged.it was said that he was seen on his cellphone while he remained traped in the vehicle.that could well be the reason for the accident in the first place.he might have pulled out his phone to text or make a call and at the speed he was traveling he ran off the road and into thee light poles.seeping is always the scapegoat drivers use when the get into accidents at nights, especially if its late.was his vehilce the only one heading in the dirrection he was driving or did he have friends in other vehicle and dedided to race home to stay alert?

    May 2, 2010

To both the driver and the passenger, I am sorry to hear of your accident, but very happy to know that you both made it out alive. I wish you both a speedy recovery, a long, happy and healthy life. Also wish to commend the efforts of those who were instrumental in getting you out of the car. May the grace of the Almighty be always with you all and your families.

However having said the above, it saddens me to ask the question; what type of nation have we chosen to become? Because what I now see is truly an unsympathetic, insensitive and judgmental one.

This story tells of a tragic accident, where two Dominicans, two people, two souls, a member of someone’s family, someone’s son and someone’s daughter could have died.

It also speaks of the heroic efforts of the rescue team, who in the early hours of the morning were alert enough to free both victims, a team who was able to free someone’s sister, someone’s father or someone’s mother and someone’s friend from a badly damaged car.

Yet I read with great dismay many of the comments, and it broke my heart as a Dominican and a young person to see what we chose to dwell on. Many forgot about the lives that were spared, many forgot about the team who worked hard to save these two individuals. Too many forgot that at the time of the accident, someone was in pain, that the victims’ mothers, fathers, sons or daughters, their brothers and sisters and their many friends were struggling to deal with the shock and hurt that comes along with such tragedies.

I read with great disappointment, as many chose to put blame and accusation before sympathy. Others gave rather interesting history lessons of our ancestors, sympathizing with the past misfortunes on that road, but sadly not the present. The comments quickly turned into a political statement, bickering of ideas and insults before the victims were even considered.

Have we really allowed ourselves to turn into a nation that is so absorbed in politics, or as individuals who are so self-righteous, that it has become so easy for us to forget the simplest of virtues as human beings or the value of a human life? Have we really forgotten how to be sympathetic, compassionate or caring? I fail to accept that this is the Dominica we want to live in today. I fail to believe that this is the people who we choose to become!

I believe that in life things happen for a reason and in each situation, in each event there is a personal message, a life lesson to be gained; as I am confident that those involved in this accident would have come to realise. But often we first have to examine our actions and reactions, be it individually or collectively to get that message. Secondly, we have to put that lesson that we have learnt into use.

Today after I read about the accident and sadly your comments the lesson I learnt is that; it is never ok to allow myself to be unsympathetic or insensitive towards others, particularly in such situations. It matters not who they may be, or what they may have done. For If it was me, my brother, my father, my sister, my mother, my son or daughter, any family member or my friend in that car; what I would wish most for is the understanding nature of others, to sympathize with my family and friends because of the pain that they would be experiencing, having almost lost a love one. I would hope that people would first be happy that a life or two were spared, that a son or daughter, a father or mother can return home to their family, before judging me for what I may have or may have not done wrong.

I have chosen to use this lesson and write this piece in the hopes that it will be an open reminder for myself and others to hold on to the virtue of compassion. And in that, I live you with the words of a great teacher and philosopher ‘to be in one’s own heart in kindly sympathy with all things; this is the nature of righteousness’ (Confucius; 551-479 BC.)

“Female passenger” I am truly relieved you all escaped with your lives but to put forward fatigue as an excuse is inexcusable! If you are too tired to drive and in danger of falling asleep DON’T DRIVE! Imagine a pilot of a passenger aircraft citing this to justify a crash!?

    • Sometimes, I can’t help but laugh, Dominica is approximately 289.9 square miles, I cannot understand that people are talking about, overtime, and work, fatigue caused them to run into poles, ect. There are no actual long distances to drive at home.

From Roseau to Portsmouth, using the old traditional road is only 52 miles, treacherous driving, some areas are not easily negotiated, however, I believe there is something else to blame than simply working long hours. I have a suspicion, but I shall not say what I think it is.

I have to laugh, considering that I get out of my house at 4:00 A.M., in the morning, heading to Toronto in Canada, by 6:00 P.M., I am in New Mexico, the time has already change into another time zone, tired I am by now, yet I do not fall asleep at my wheel.

So, I’ll check into a hotel, if I do not want to hang out at a simple Rest Area, Next morning at the same time I hit the Road again, by the end of the day I have gone past Missouri, I’ll stop for the night again, that means within two days on the road I have covered more than two thousand miles of my twenty-seven hundred miles to Toronto.

Because I am closer to Canada, I’ll leave about 8:00 A.M., and by 3:00 P.M., I am in Toronto; no accident involved!

And what about the Truck Drivers, who are on the road for all like ten days at a time in their Eighteen-wheeler Rig.

These people do not get into as many accidents as we get into in a small place like Dominica.

The problem in Dominica, is speed under difficult conditions; we like to show off, we like to show people howfast we can drive!

I know about that: I was a road-hog when I returned to Dominica for a brief period in 1963, and work for J Astaphan & Co. There is a guy from Wesley named Conrad Andrew, we used to create havoc on the roads of Dominica, I don’t even know how we manage to survive and be alive.

And Conrad even went further, he took his havoc to the air, crashing a light Aircraft into the sea in Wesley, with two passengers with him, and all three walked out of the sea.

Our people need to slow down, speed is the problem.

As for the doctor who ran into the park vehicle, maybe he or she was on some illegal substance, workng long hours had anything to do with his accident.

      Hahahahahahah!

WE WILL HAVE ALL THE SIGNS AND ALL THE LIGHTS, AND STILL HAVE ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS. SOME PEOPLE NEED TO GO BACK TO DRIVING SCHOOL AND THEY ALSO NEED TO USE THEIR COMMON SENSE.

Poor Lighting and poor road signs are sometimes the key factor in some accidents, while driving withour due care and attention. Cell users are the culprits most of the times. How can you drive and text? How can you focus on the road when you are having detail conversations on your cell phones. The roads in dominica are so narrow that you have to pay attention. I don’t live there but live in another caribbean island I am dominican by birth and I visit very often and the things I see happening on the roads happens every where but dominica is one of the many caribbean island that has very narrow roads so you have to pay attention. So people take your time pay attention and focus.

This particualr road has very poor lighting..It is basically a death trap that most people can’t get out of. Other than poor lighting the lights put in the middle shoud be lined up on the sides…the material it is built with is so strong it’s almost impossible for people to survive jamming into it..It’s just a stupid job..Nevertheless..it’s up to us drivers to be careful..young people believe the faster that they drive the better driver they are..bulls***…Also if you think you are not fit to drive (whether drunk or too tired)… please find a plan that put you at a better position. Remember life is a risk..but all the times you see you can make a better decision..take it..my prayers go out ot you all…

Thank GOD there were NO deaths this time; it’s time to make changes to that ROAD to avoid further deaths. Although making changes will, in no way, prevent the drivers from getting into accidents. The DRIVERS themselves, knowing how dangerous all the roads are, SHOULD be a little more CAREFUL. There’s no rush. It is better to be SAFE than SORRY. Driving FAST is not driving, driving CAUTIOUSLY, within the SPEED LIMITS and leaving EARLY enough will most definitely PREVENT those accidents. Almost, if not all, accidents are AVOIDABLE. BE CAREFUL ON THE ROADS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We all have our own opinions and are quick to judge who drives too fast at 2 am,while we ourselves are in our beds. The fact remains, very few roads in Dominica of a high standard, except the one I see they are now doing in the valley. Most of our roads have no traffic signs, the lanes are not separated and on that particular road, which was designed for tourists to walk more than motorists to drive the lighting is shit. That doesnt mean, we drivers should be reckless.
hey, lets just be careful on those lil roads that we have and please lets get road signs on all our roads.
Look at the Jimmit Warner road built by public works about 2 years ago, not 1 road sign.

Common people, we need to do better .

i hear where you coming from my girl but my boyfriend and i were in a similar position once and we pulled up on the side of the road and slept for a while before continuing our journey. its better to get home late than not get there at all. at the same time, i thank God that neither of you were hurt during this whole ordeal and encourage you to give thanks the same way.

Do u even realize that two of you could have died? Y’all were lucky and u sound a tad bit complacent, like u r guaranteed life. You don’t even sound like u need any sympathy because it seem that life is yours. some innocent pedestrian or another driver could also have been killed because of you and your mate’s irresponsibility. it is not ok to fall asleep for any reason. so don’t b coming here talking about tired….that’s not an excuse. IRRESPONSIBLE DRIVERS sleep at the wheel, if u r too sleepy park somewhere and get some rest, it is better that driving yourself or others to eternal rest.

Some of u Dominicans are such hypocrites, people who don’t know what happened shouldn’t jump to conclusions. The guy is a hard working man who was very tired, this accident had nothing to do with speeding or any of the s… allu talking about, he fell asleep at the wheel while trying to get home and obviously lost control of the vehicle. So to Sammy and the “anonymous idiot” stop with the negative BS and get ur facts straight before running ur mouth!!! Some of you people disgust me!!!! Thank God his ok!!!

I am also a friend of Derrick and know him since 1999. He is a very strong young man, like myself. My heart goes out to him. I was on the scene of the accident within minutes and even while in that situation, he looked strong. He was able to pull himself together and even assist the firemen with the rescue pulling himself up by holding the steerign wheel on a number of occasions. I can still see him reaching for his cell phone while trapped making several calls to let his family and friends know hof his predicament.

That scene is etched in my mind… I wish him a speedy recovery and that his life returns to normalcy…

Oh my Lord.. such a tragedy. I thank God they are still alive. This is really terrifying the alarming increase of accidents we are having. Especially on this little highway leading to Roseau. looks like seat belt policy and MOST IMPORTANTLY, traffic laws must be implemented and the road to be policed when persons go above the traffic limit. We have no idea how highly necessary this is. Dominicans are used to old roads, now things are stepping up, laws and regulation has to be put it in place to limit the speed at which persons drive at various points. My sympathy goes out to the family who may still be in shock. Thank God they are alive.

Sometimes i question our ability to think clearly when it is needed. If any chauffeur should understand the design of motor vehicles and how it functions, we could avoid alot of misharps like this one. My questions to the chauffeur though are; was his judgement in anyway affected by the intake of alcohol, and did he at any point felt sllepy because of fatigue?
It is very easy to lose control of a vehicle, and speeding increases the possibility of such, thereby increasing the risk.
The design of that stretch of road has two main purpose: to protect pedestrians from vehicular traffic and to easily define opposite traffic. On approach to that section of road it is imperative that chauffeurs reduce their speed to at least 35 mph as you anticipate cross traffic.
Another major concern i have is the issue of passenger buses, PLEASE COLLECT PASSENGERS AT THE DESIGNATED PULL OFFS. Because vehicles are man made, we never know when they will fail to stop and will be unable to avoid hitting the passenger bus.
oh by the way, the lighting: does poor lighting cause accidents on other roadways? each vehicle is fitted with headlights which are much more powerfull that the street lights.

    May 1, 2010

It is always sad when someone is involved in an accident, fortunately for these two worse did not happen to them, I lost two friends to that road and it does invite itself to speeding, even before it was redone. That is no excuse for speeding, and while we are on the topic we need to put some provisions in place, the middle separator on which the lights are mounted are large and clearly visible to any cautious driver. speed bumps are the most effective method that i know of well that and traffic lights. Speed bumps spoil the driving experience and can damage low lying cars. We need a few street lights in at least 3 junctions in the middle of town. We need them especially lunch time when everyone figure he has right of way and children keep traffic backed up because they never seem to stop crossing the street.

    May 1, 2010

allu tink iz a race track eh…?

we dont need more speed bumps… this is not the country side… its a residential area…. people always crossing the street there… be careful people… it doesn’t make sense to be sorry after the damage is done.

as soon as you fix a road in Dominica… if its straight-ish and flat… everyone thinks its for racing. another accident… let me see if they not going to start checking their speeds. they believe that if you are not driving fast… you cant drive…

i’m sorry about what happened… but actions have consequences….

for the others out there… who cant hear will feel!

Such a bad thing to happen to this young man, Thank God it wasn’t worse cause it could have been. The damage of the car looks like he had a speed but everyone drives fast @ times especially early morning when the road is clear which is safe, so lets STOP being HYPOCRITES!!!

I read all the posts on this issue. Most are to the point.
If there’s a lighting issue then commonsense( must admit it is a scarce commodity) should prevail and some effort must be made to improve the lighting.
Playing devil’s advocate: Was alcohol ,drugs involved or just speed? These will have to be determind and rectified by individuals as well as the law. The youth generally seem not to value life it is often said. i was once a youth but was not nowhere close to being so dumb. There are many more vehicles on the road than when i was under 30( which was not too long ago but it bewilders me why today’s youth the future of our nation are so illogical and incapable of using sound judgement( only if they are mentally compromised at the moment) under the influence of some thing alcohol, grass, heavier stuff even glory cider lol!
The older folk need to put their grands to sit and give em a lecture in commonsense. But what if the grands as young as they maybe are always high on lapscent and nannie? We are constantly losing our youth and we already are lacking in population soon there will be not only an island of middle ages and elderly but more chinese and haitians etc and DA will be something of the pass we will soon be like St.marteen no natives. It’s alreeady in progress thanks to DFP under mamo then the Solid team currently the Skerrit hybrid DLP selling our passport , citizenship, resourcesetc. Now adding lack of judgement by our youth killing themselves weekly is unacceptable.
I await the neumerous postings from the Bush lawyers etc( who like to write and shoot at evething that may appear to move even if there is no wind) asking what does politics have to do with a road accident.
cartidge or wright,Labour power or powder etc. In rebuttling please & I reiterate please look at our population befor shooting at or shooting the messenger.Look at the bigger picture.

What is going at 2:00am in Dominica? These are times when there is less cars on the road but often the time when the worse accidents happen. Dominicans need an alternative to all this partying. I am not accusing the drivers of drinking and driving but why do drivers insist on hitting the poles with their cars. Is it because there judgments are clouded, their vision impaired? Is it time to implement a DUI/DWI law in Dominica. It is true that our fathers said that they drove better when they drink but obviously this is taking a toll on our young people.

It is not ok under any culture for one to drink while driving, or drink then drive. Save the young people from themselves. Arrest them.

When was the last time someone came from a prayer meeting and hit a light pole?

    May 1, 2010

The tendency for us to abdicate our responsibility and blame someone or something else for our problems is becoming legendary in Dominica.

The road is as safe or as dangerous as its users’ willingness to accept risks associated with using it.

Stop the blame game – inadequate lighting, corners pulling, etc. Stop driving at breakneck speeds; our roads cannot accommodate it. Exercise caution!

Can u imagine what it’s gonna be like after the new highway is completed.I think its high time police start patrolling and ticketing speeders and racers and drunk drivers especially on the weekends.

    • Roz
      May 4, 2010

Sadly, we cannot ticket speeders unless there is a stated speed limit…many of us don’t see the need for it…but a realistic speed limit should be stated on all roads..i see a fella do some makaqwui on the bayfront on Friday, trying to make his car fly it would seem…i myself got out of there…i not planning to be innocent bystander

  63. Cassandra
    May 1, 2010

Typical of us to blame the road and not our driving. We are perfect masters of the road, are we not young fellows! Nor do we like to show off…or do we? The lighting on this road is more than adequate.
I just hope these virtuosos are insured and don’t leave passengers or innocent by-standers maimed without recourse. Time for the police to introduce speeed limits, speed guns …and breathalisers.

    May 1, 2010

Why you guys attacking the road and the lighting? Soon you all will say is the PM that cause that to happen. The root of the problem is a lack of caution on the part of them young drivers. I am never an advocate of speed bumps on highways but its time for the law to be amended and allow police to use radar speed guns in helping to curb such senseless accidents. We cannot sit on our laurels and blame everything else while nothing is done to address this ill. Violence is taking the lives of the youth ever so often and what is left will soon be taken by reckless/ dangerous driving.

I sincerely wish those injured a speedy recovery. Thank god no lives were lost this time but who knows when will be the next!

We must look into the history of that particular stretch of road for the answers to the posible cause of those many fatalities and casualities.

There was a time when that road from Fond Cole to DBMC area was used as to publicly display the Runnaway Slaves who, when captured, were exposed and left to die ‘crucifiction style’. Most, if not all of the Chief Rebels were killed and their rotted remains were buried right there; so you see our African Brothers and Sisters…those who fought for our liberation were not properly put away and thus there is the need for an apeasal ceremony so that the souls/spirits of the fallen would rest in peace. Until such time, am afraid that those tormented saints shall continue to seek appropriate embodiment in which they may find much needed rest.

My suggestion is that, the area or Blvd. should be named Neg Mawon Drive and that the greenry which was taken off to errect this concrete contraption should be replaced…the trees should be replanted. I FURTHER SUGGEST THAT ANY ATTEMP TO NAME THIS FACILITY AFTER A WHO I HEARD IT WAS GOING TO BE NAMED AFTER, OR ANY OTHER SUCH PERSONALITY WOULD ONLY FURTHER ENRAGE THE SPIRITS…more of our brothers and sisters will die if this is done.

THIS IS SERIOUS…Ask people like Dr. Honychurch and Alex Bruno, they may be able to shed more light on that subject. I am just a time keeper.

Where did you get all of this crap from???? At least give us a citation and state your source(s). The problem simply is that people love speading on that road late at night and in the wee hours of the morning when they think that traffic is light. Until Dominican drivers wake up and become more aware of the danger of doing this, then we will continue to see more of these accidents in this same area.

This area have been having a lot of accidents even before this new highway was built. but one of the serious issues now are the solar lights in the center of the road. A lot of vehicles having been crashing into these lights cause they should not be there in the middle of the highway. This problem needs to be addressed by the appropriate authorities if not there will be a lot more accidents to come involving these solar light poles though I Pray there will be no more…….. God guide & protect the drivers of this country each & everyday they are active on this road especially in avoiding accidents… AMEN.
