A landslide under the Canefield Cliff caused a traffic back up in the area on Sunday morning.
The exact time the slide took place is unknown but one vehicle was caught up in the falling rocks.
DNO understands the driver is unhurt.
The road is presently being cleared.
And the traffic under the cliff in the morning needs to be ADDRESSED, that ticking time bomb that hanging there all you will understand when nothing at all is done!!
Ministry of Public Works, please open up the back ROAD to MAUNE DANIEL, THERE has to be an alternative ROAD. This is urgent. These roads have to be done around the island, where is all the CBI monies. Fix up.
I guess the authorities are waiting for the worst before doing something about it now…It had and is given ample signs should something worst happen in the future…This is dangerous business,,under the canefield cliff,,on the way to Pointe Mitchel,,,some little village before the mero bridge and some more spots that I can’t remember off my head…
The authorities need not go to far to see what needs to be to that problem…Just next door,,Martinique and they’ll find the solution….
silver lake / Fly City, Laudat and the list goes on. They need to lok into teracing and gabion baskets as well as using wire mesh and heavy duty bolting to trap potential falls. This is OLD technology and methods. Dominica has many more disasters waiting to happen if we keep this up this kind of mentality.
as for Cochrane!
Like i have said they need to change the road name to the highway of death, Drive at your on risk. well it still better that the atkinson to castle bruce, road. Once again, well no humans or animals, were hurt It just another “Normal” day on the canefield road
Apparently, this is the second Canefield Cliff landslide in four months onto a public road. When can some engineering work be started to increase road usage safety?
I wonder why we’re so averse to blasting some of those cliffs that pose threats to routine commute. It’s all over the island. Remove the overhanging boulders wherever they are.
I agree, another cliff is the one on the way to coptall , just above the intersection with bathestate and the back road, disasters waiting to happen
its been about 3 maybe 4 years since they have those red barrels on the side of the undermining road. That is going to fall very soon, then there will be no access to the roseau valley.
You may not be aware that there are residences right above these cliffs, they may have been constructed without proper planning approval but nonetheless, there are people living there and I am very concerned about their safety.
It does not take much. Identify the locations that are highest risk grade them from stable to imminent and go ahead and remove the ones rhat are imminent. Low blast, block roads in afternoon, clean immediately. Risk of sudden failure averted. Chances of failure while traffic flowing removed. Commonsense!!!!
that’s exactly what I was thinking.. it has more places that are just waiting to fall, guaranteed to fall actually…. blast it and terrace it to minimize such occurrences….
The west Moreno Daniel area adjacent to the highway is in danger of collapse due to a number of caves below the subgrade. Foundations of buildings in that vicinity should be inspected for evidence of subsidence.
Good thing no one hurt. Are those houses in the background of that photo anywhere near the edge of that cliff? The authorities now have to look for alternatives: Engage the Dutch who are experts in land reclamation or build a road via Morne Daniel through Fond Cole. This one road to Roseau from North West East has to be something of the past. Come on, let’s be more foresighted.
Good idea “HIFIVE” but that not how the dead red DLP backward, socialist, thinking government, thinks. They could not find the “Dutch” in the middle of the day with a flashlight and GPS, They only listen to their red, Cuba, venezulean and Dragon, comrades. Who build substandard, roads, bridges, petrocases housing, coffee plants. I am still looking and waiting for the 3 cuban engineers, that was suppose to be walking the country roads, and was to give a report, on how to fix them. THAT WAS ALMOST 2 YEARS AGO. Well if you tell they about a passport, CBI selling plan, then they will have foresight
The Dutch are only experts in reclaiming land from the sea. There are no mountains in Holland.
Good thing almost everybody left DA already, if our population was still 70,000 somebody could have gotten hurt
Hmph! 70,000? I glad for you. Keep ulling the wool over your eyes.
Perhaps a bright young engineer could develop a project entitled “Improving the resiliency of Dominica’s Coastal Road Network.” This project would be funded under our must accomplish initiative, of being the world’s first climate resilient nation. From a commonsense point of view, it could involve aspects such as [1] cliff and overhang stabilisation and or [2] diversion of coastal roads. From an engineering point of view any other aspects could be added, by the people who study these things at university. Am positive someone would look at it and fund it.
An excellent suggestion, but unfortunately we do not train practical engineers, be they civil, mechanical or electrical. And all too often “the people who study these things at university” are devoid of practical experience.
This will never come to pass. Name one roadway where this type of thoughtful engineering has taken place on the island.
Chances are it has already been completed, many times over in the last 10 years and the reports just sit on some Minister’s desk.
Bright young people are not listened to. We still live in a society where the youth/ young people are scoffed off as idiots by the higher ups and older people. like who are they to tell us what to do? These archaic position holders do not like to be told what to do. The disregard the messages because the messengers are not respected. As a result, everything keeps being done like it has been for the past 30 years. No ingenuity, no innovation. Everything is short term with no foresight for the next generations. That is why we continue to have a brain drain with less and less opportunities. Maria was the tip of the ice berg. Things have to get worse. trust me before these old heads wake up and change their mindsets.
personally we need to get away from living on the coasts. we need more interconnecting roads in the interior that are less windy and treacherous. we need to use our mountains as natural wind breaks and maintain PROPER roads that are build to take heavy equipment sized vehicles. These little one lane roads that are used as 2 lane “highways” are nonsense. we waste land and materials and manpower with what is presently here. We need to incorporate technology and stop being naysayers to people who have innovative ideas like including rubber (from old tires – research if you need clarification) in our asphalt to preserve road conditions or rumble strips (grooves or ridges on the edges of roads) for safety. In all seriousness i dont know what we are doing here. then we talk about wanting to be the first climate resilient country in the world. We are just doing the same nonsense we have always done all over again. THE PLACE IS A MESS!!!!
But it wasn’t to Jesus Christ Skerrit and those Church leaders dedicated Dominica man. You realize shortly after they did their ceremony to win votes is one trouble after another? Guess they dedicated it to skerrit’s jesus, which is skerrit himself and his illuminati god. Since that time a week cannot go by without some drama or cause for concern. 1 Cor. 10:30 “But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.”
Peter all you better reverse that dedication and rededicate all you selves to God
So is only on Dominica land slides? This phenomena happens the world over.I suppose we will blame oyr PM for the 7.2 earthquake in Mexico den.
I’m not sure how much free building materials that you’ve received from the Cabal, but it must be quite a bit. The majority of our roads are near the coast, due to our terrain. I can go back 30 years, and none of our former leaders took any initiative to address these issues. This is far greater than your “Dear Leader.”
To be honest Anthony it was under the DLP that under the cliff became much safer. Before that the road was undermined from the sea and we still had to deal with landslides. I remember how it was in the 80’s and 90’s and early 2000’s. As a child i would close my eyes when being driven there in fear that we would fall into the sea. Those who lived here during that time can maybe remember.
Let’s be truthful. It’s only a matter of time before something tragic happens. One can only be lucky so many times. Because of the precipitous landscape, some of these roads are extremely hazardous to drive on. The authorities seem to be oblivious to the dangers. Urgent attention should be paid to this untenable situation as people’s lives are at enormous risk.
Boy there is always something happening in Dominica these days and PM Skerrit not getting a break and seems to have no peace. It reminds me of the Bible days when those Kings we’re wicked and evil and God would punish them and the land until they would repent and God would give them a good king and then and only then the would experience peace , as seen in Judges 3:11 ” . 11And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died. Dominica needs that rest and peace so we need to get rid of Skerrit’ if we going to experience rest and peace from mother nature and above
Such ignorance from small minded people
Everything in Dominica broken but we gonna be the first climate resilient nation
“first climate resilient nation”
Such thoughts came out of the mind of a waste of time very foolish individual( know him name but I doh calling it).
No name no warrant: No execution of a warrant I cannot be arrested oui
But him is an idiot!
Because of the ignorance of people like you, God will continue to protect and bless the good people of Dominica.
This is one of them next to that cave. I have mentioned here before the risk of these hanging rocks from possi to Roseau. They are weathered and fractured and just a matter of time. One day people are going get killed and the authorities will come with some BS story. There are actions that can be employed reduce that risk. Why can’t we be proactive for once.
Proactive is like a dirty 4 letter word in Dominica.
How lucky that this happened on a Sunday morning rather than on a busy weekday. Hawing said that, it was only a matter of time before something like this would happen and it will happen again.
Thank God no one was hurt.
Sorry to hear of this incident, happy to hear no one got injured. Everyone have a safe day.
