The body of 13-year-old Daniel Joseph of Boetica was fished from the sea on Thursday afternoon.
Joseph, along with his 15-year-old cousin Jamecia St. Ville and other friends were engulfed by a huge wave during a beach picnic at Riviere Cyrique on Wednesday.
Joseph’s body was found off the coast of Petite Savanne at about 4 p.m. He was a student of the Goodwill Secondary School. The search continues for St. Ville, a Wesley High School student.
After receiving information from two reliable sources, DNO earlier reported that St. Ville’s body had also been found. However, this is not so.
“They along with others were picnicking at the Secret Beach in Riviere Cyrique [and] a huge wave engulfed them and up until the time of reporting they had not yet been found. An official complaint has been launched. Coastguard officials responded promptly and conducted a search in the area,” Police Public Relations Officer Inspector Claude Weekes said.
The incident occurred between 5 and 5:30 p.m, Weekes said.
A relative told Dominica News Online that the sea was rough on that day, however the two other friends were stronger swimmers and managed to save themselves.
Weekes noted earlier Thursday that the search was hampered by rough seas.

I have to go to Daniel Joseph funeral today and I know it is going to be a sad time.
He was a good student and well loved. It is not common to get a student like him. But God knows why he took him home.
It was a joy being his Form Teacher. I will always remember the times he came to the Reading Room and said “Miss I just come to see you” I would say laughingly, Daniel get off the First Form Block but he would only laugh and say, “well that is where you are”……. In class he was cool. The other students in my class liked him and got on well with him.
I will always remember him.
To the family …. Be strong , Be brave, Hold on to the rich memories he left you with.
I did not know Jamieca and Daniel but when I heard this I began crying I got an instant heach ache and my body was filled with goosebumps. I am 13 years and I never took life serious but today I think I learned a lesson that I am never to young to die and do not take life for granteed. Always live your life like there is no tomorrow.
It is with great sadness that we learn of the tragic deaths of these two young children, and we would like to express our sincere and heartfelt symphaty to the families, Other people can comfort and console us in our grief.They can be part of the healing, but only after all the waves of mourning have washed through our lives. Comfort can come only after we can accept death as a reality… and only as Jesus brings us to the realization that physical death is not the end. Death is not the extinguishing of the light—-it is the putting out of the lamp because the dawn has come . The Lord brings one adventure to an end, only to open another to us. He is tireless and inexhaustible. With Him we must be ready for anything. Our thoughts are with you always.

It is with great sadness that I express my condolences to the family and close friends of Jamecia and Joseph. My eyes are filled with tears as I bring myself to understand how sucha bright and good spirited and god fearing young girl such as jamecia could be taken away so suddenly from everyone who loved her so much.
At this time I would just like the parents of such a kind hearted child to just be strong and leave the rest to god. For he giveth and he takeeth. Only he knew what was Jamecia’s future and who are we to question how and when she will depart from us. To the many friends and her teachers at School who I Know is greatly affected and saddened by this news, seek comfort in each othe and most of all in God.
To all young people right now on summer vacation, be safe be cautious and make the right choices as to where you spend your time.

This reminds of 2 summers ago wen i was engulfed by a wave on the pacific side at castlebruce and i almost lost my life at about 4pm also…..i was almost pronounced dead .When my family heard the news of these two children they were in sorrow and grief jus rememberin wat had happened to me…i wud lie to tel the family too hold storng and its gonna be ok..accept my sympathy i know how u feel……R.I.P

A few years ago we experience the same horrible loss and all our hearts were broken. The tears you cry are real, and I know how the family of Daniel and Jamecia feels. His body was found and that was a relief to us, because at least we could say goodbye. I am happy they found Daniel and I pray they find Jamecia as well. To the family, hold fast to your faith in God…he never gives us much more than we can bare. His will are not ours and so trust that he knows why this had to happen. Be strong…and pull your strength in his word and prayer.
I feel the pain of their families because i to have felt that same pain just recently when i lost my brother and i still do its not easy to get over. may the lord be with the families may he be their comfort and their guide during this trying time for he alone can help them get over their grief.

This is a very sad situation. The sea was really rough that morning. I don’t even think the fish were cpmfortable in it. I won’t put the blame of death on anyone; but being from the South East of Dominica, I believe that everyone should know how the sea behaves, and when we should and should not bathe in it.
Secondly, Secret beach is a very dangerous place for sea bathers. A local resident once told me, the first time that I visited there; that thaT PLACE HAS ALOT OF STRONG CURRENTS on either side of the beach so its best to bathe in the center.
But every thing happens for a reason. I reccommend that when ever people are going sea bathing in a place that they are not familiar with that they get some local person to show them the area and caution them as well.

As a young child growing in the East side in D/ca, I remember being told the sea in that area in rough, and you do not go and play, swin or any thing down there. Does’nt the kids now not being told the same thing. Up to 1999 when I came back to D/ca a young lad lost his life in the same area. Come on peopls get with it, and sign post the place to save lives. Such heat break for the two family.

When loved ones have passed away, there is no amount of wailing, screaming, or bawling, that will bring them back to us. But the passing away of that person, should put a deep thought into the minds of loved ones and close friends.
The thought is that: My loved one has passed away, but did he/she lived a Life that pleased God. Is he/she destined to be among the resurrection that Jesus has promised. Will I meet him or her at that beautiful shore? Will the golden bell ring for him/her and me? When the roll is called up yonder, will we be there together?
Loved ones and friends of those two people who passed away, give thanks to God that He did not allow them to be dead and their bodies lost at sea forever and ever. But He wants you to hold on to Life in the Spirit on behalf of your loved one who has passed away, as you go on to live a Life that is pleasing to God. This Life is the ways of Love, in Spirit and in Truth.
It is seem as if our young people, our loved ones, are dying like flies and mosquitoes which encountered a blow of pest control as often as we use it against them. But the question always remains. What kind of Life are those young people taking away with. And what is our responsibility as loved ones, on their behalf?
God does not remember Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as dead people. Neither should we remember our loved ones as dead, before God, because He will not regard them. For Jesus once said that God is not the God of the dead.
People of Dominica, if you already know that, just continue to do it, but if you did not know, know it now. You can live with God, on behalf of your loved one who has passed away, just as God wanted him or her to live with Him.
I recently read: “The Life that lives in the heart of a loved one never dies”. That is exactly what I am saying. But make sure that the Life of your loved one lives in your heart–a heart that continues to be pleasing to God, in Jesus Christ, in Spirit and in Truth.

This tragedy is not just a loss to their family,not just a lost to Boetica, not just a loss to Dominica, not just a loss to the caribbean but a loss to the world two young energetic individuals at the high school level who had the capacity to affect change and make contributions to our world are leaving leaving us so prematurely anyone with a heart for love sad. These two children i pray that the lord will comfort the parents cause no one can prepare for something like this let alone dealing with it. I’m just observing that the Canefield Met Office had issued advisories all of last week and this week, about sea-bathers and small craft operators etc.
I’m just wondering why these teenagers felt that they had to go ahead with a beach party on that day. Couldn’t they have put it off? The summer has just begun. I mean all of us who live in D.A. know what the weather was like for the past time. Even worse, that’s the Atlantic Ocean you’re dealing with. I’m just saying.
I’m not about criticizing them, I’m just wondering if that tragedy couldn’t have been avoided if common sense and better judgement had been used.

was thinking the same thing. grew up in the south east and i have always been deathly afraid of these areas in regards to the ocean. we really need to do more in terms of informing the public of the dangers of rip tides and currents in these areas. i think too many have perished around especially at rosalie also. this is so sad.

These are my two cousins and no they didn’t try to escape on a bois whatever you want to call it to guadeloupe. A group of young people were on a picnic and the water actually washed away four of them and only two made it back. Now my aunt has lost a daughter and my uncle a son….one of the other guys who made it was also my aunts son…..May there souls rest in peace
