The young woman from Wesley who was flown to Trinidad to have emergency surgery has died.
Shernel Prince is reported to have died at 11pm on Monday evening.
Prince had surgery last week to repair a leaking valve in her heart.
Local efforts to help fund that major operation had included a local radio station, Q95 raising EC$48,000 for the cancer patient.
Her father Mathew Prince had earlier been granted a loan of EC$50,000 by a corporate citizen, to help pay the bill for the EC$80,000 operation in Port of Spain.
The family recently expressed disappointment that efforts to obtain additional funds from the Dominica government to assist Prince had failed.
The government had initially provided TT$185,000 to help meet Shernel’s medical needs.
It’s a shame to see a father, Matthew Prince, allow the worker’s party to turn his poor, innocent child’s funeral into a circus. When did the Dominica government have to bury his daughter? The government has no obligation to do so. It’s HIS responsibility. His relatives on St. Thomas didn’t give a penny to help him. Now, they are crying as if they were concerned relative. I hope the worker’s party helps him pay back the loan.
In my days, the Labor Party was a good party. Everybody needs to get a job ad leave the Prime Minister alone. It’s all just greed.
May her soul rest in peace.
my prayers goes out to shernel prince family even though i don’t no them.may her soul rest in perfect peace with the lord, just be strong i will pray for her and the family,
ALL U DOMINICANS TOO BAD!! D MAN NEVER SAID GOVERNMENT DID NOT HELP HIM!
JEEEEEEEEEEEEZE! HE JUST ASKED THAT THEY WOULD CONTINUE HELPING! SOME PPL ARE SO SICK!! i do not care how many thumbs down i get!
Only the “Good” die young. I pray Yahweh accept you among the angels.
This is so sad
Beginnings are scary. Endings are usually sad, but it’s the middle that counts the most. To the family of Shernel, I would like you to ponder on all the fun times you had with your daughter. The good lord will strengthen you and bring you a deeper joy. My sympaphies to you all
her father is a living example of what fathers should be to their children. God will bless you !
My heartfelt condolences to the family , friends and all who knew Shernel.
Even in sad times we find the time 2 critize other’s
i did not know u may your soul rest in peace also courage and strength 2 the family’s . but the lord know’s best as he said he does not give us what we cannot handle , death is a tough thing but may-be she would suffer 2 much. D/ca’s be united and stop the odld comments on the pm or aon shernel’s family they need encouargement .
Another young life gome failed by dominica medical system. My question really is, are there Doctors in dominica or just blood suckers who prey on poor people, but make sure that their friends and family are well taken care of?
I mewan you have a lot of people walking around in white robes looking pretty and cant do a shit but suck the blood of the people of dominica damn it this is 2012
That is a very ignorant comment to make. Doctors are not miracle workers. They do the best they can. Sometimes, God just has different plans. Don’t blame the doctors. Am sure they did their best.
RIP shernel i know that u re smiling with the angels keep the smiles u were fundamentally a strong person, good at heart and loving.my deepest sympathy goes out to the prince family.uncle i know she is o.k dont worry
It was announced on the radio this morning that during the surgery, doctors discovered additional complications… This leads me to believe that whether or not money was recieved in time the complications (which were in addition to her leaking valves) would still have been a factor. This is sad though that treatment is delayed because of lack of funds. Health care should be a basic human right. We need National Health insurance. Governments cannot be expected to cover all or the majority of expenses in each individual case. In its disappointment, the family should still remember to be grateful for the initial donation made by the state and also by individual citizens and corporations. My condolences to her family.
Shernell was a great example of what a humble heart is like, even if she was in pain and suffering she gave thanks for many things. We should take example of what she’d wanted. She was on bed, yet she saw it fit to pray for her country, not differentiating anything or anyone!! My heartfelt condolences go out to her family and friends. with her passing we should not mourn her death, but be happy she’s gone to meet her maker.
Although her death feels like a stab to the heart, one things’ for certain – there’ll be no more suffering for her.
She’s gone, but she won’t be forgotten, and she’ll be getting many flowers too.
RIP child of God.
i send my regards to the family, friends, and love ones of shernel prince.
i know dat ur up in heaven
may ur young good soul rest in peace.
Admist all this animosity i’m sure this young girl’s asking God to bless her country and people as she is in heaven…i didn’t know her but from her voice i can tell she has a beautiful soul, so hopefull…Rest In Peace my dear, you are perfect now. Kiss my kids for me x
my condolences to the family, she is in a better place. that is the only comfort..stay strong in the Lord one day we will meet shernel. she was ready for anything. God took his angel away from this horrible earth. I know one day it will b me is a pity no one has return to say what is life like beyond death.. For us we just need to live our life for God so that whatever time death come we all will b ready. B strong prince family.
While, I’m extremely saddened by her passing; I’m disgusted that the cost of her treatment was that high!! One day the world will learn that the cost of a human life is far more superior than the cost of machines!! sniff, sniff, for this young lady and her family.
what aches me more is that if she did not have the mney on time she would have died and the doctors would not have the surgery done..ah ah what a thing uh? during the time of waiting her valves kept leaking hence making her closer to death. now their money in their pocket.
@ Anoushah
Recall the DGS teacher who was injured on his head, on-the-job by a student and requested a Scan. He was told at the PMH that it would cost $500. He said that he did not have the money. I wondered if he was ever successful in geting it?
Taken from a book of jokes which originated in the US:
A man frantically rushed into a hospital emergency room with two broken arms. He ran up to the nurse at the desk and shouted. “I need a doctor!”
The nurse calmly nodded and said, “Before we treat you. I have to know one vital fact.”
“I’m not allergic to penicillin,” cried the man. “My heart is fine and I’m not on any medication.”
“That’s good,” said the nurse, “but that’s not the information I need.”
“What is it then?” shouted the man, grimacing in pain. The nurse replied, “Do you have medical coverage or will you pay cash?”
When I read of the DGS teacher’s plight of being refused a Scan because he did not have the funds I searched for this joke and could not find it. Tonight I searched for it again and found it.
While this is a joke and does not reflect the seriousness that a young lady lost her life, it goes to show that people will be denied medical attention in some countries which do not have Health Care System. In the meantime, as the patient is waiting for funding to undergo the operation, sadly, you know what could happen.
In the case of Shernel, this is what happened. Do not blame anyone for that. The government should try to implement this necessary system and keep funding on hand in the event another national may be in need of an operation.
The T & T operation was costly. One would think that the T & T hospital could have done it for less and sooner. The operation may have been too late. I hate to state this but I wonder how efficient the doctors are.
She is out of her earthly anxiety and suffering. May her soul rest in peace.
To the family of the young lady – Just look up to Father God who will not leave you comfortless!
In every battle the warrior must rest.. Shernelle you fought the battle and now you are resting not defeated, for where you no longer could fight, the Great I AM..your Comforter and Deliverer carried your people. You amid your illness united a nation across miles and oceans. One young girl brought us together and reminded us of the spirit of community, forgiveness and love. I believe this is how you would want Dominica to remain and your passing is our gift of renewal in thought and spirit. Thank GOD for you, now dress in your crimson warrior gown and go sing with angels! Rest in Peace Dominican beauty!
REST IN PEACE
Shernel Prince, Wow what a beautiful soul. Your light will continue to shine. Your smile will be forever in our hearts. The twinkle in your eye we will remember every time we think of you. Your strength in the almighty helps us to renew my faith in God. Your courage is a motivator to us that in spite of the odds, you found the strength to never give in or give up. The promise you held onto that you could do anything through Christ who strengthen you, we will never ever forget. Your love for community and your active involvement to participate will be missed. We will remember how you so freely shared your ideas with you youth group S.O.U.L Enterprise to move forward, continues to inspire us. Your graceful dance moves during interpretive gospel dances with the members of your dance group, we remember fondly. Your involvement with the Wesley Peace Initiative will bring forth fruits. We will miss you more than you could ever imagine. You know how much we loved you and with this we are comforted.
To your parents, Mathew and Don Prince, your brothers, aunts, Edith, Annie, Wynant, Lee, Lynn and your numerous uncles and family members. I can only imagine your pain and remain hopeful that God will see you through. Mathew and Don you raised a beautiful daughter and should feel proud for the example she was to us. Shernel you’re resting in the arms of your redeemer, good bye my dear.
I will love you always. Athenia Benjamin
What Dominica needs is a good Health Insurance Company, or National Health Insurance thus making it mandatory and affordable for everyone to obtain medical insurance.
MONEY CANNOT GIVE LIFE AND MONEY CANNOT TAKE LIFE .IT ONLY CONTRIBUTES TO GIVING AND TAKING.THIS YOUNG LADY’S TURN HAS COME ,MINE AND OTHERS WILL FOLLOW.
STOP PICKING ON PEOPLE BECAUSE WHAT EVER WE DO OR SAY WE WILL ALWAYS BE CRITICIZED .MAY HER SOUL REST IN PEACE….
R.I.P
My sympathies goes out to the family and friends of Shernelle Prince. The lord knows best. May her soul rest in peace.

RIP miss prince.
Now its time that some rich person set up a charity organisation to help the less fortunate persons. We depend to much on government for assistance in this country. God helps those who help themself. And the father should know that goin on q95 and cry foul on the government won’t help his situation either. All politicians are corrupt. Thank u Lord that I don’t depend on government for nuthin
FIRST LET ME SAY MY DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO FAMILY AND FRIEND OF THE PRINCE FAMILY.
R.I.P MS S. PRINCE
AND TO YOU LA STARR PRAISE GOD THAT YOU ARE ONE WHO DONT NEED HELP FROM THE GOVERNMENT, BUT THE GOVERNMENT DID ASSIST.
many rich people did not sit on their behind as some of you and your relatives. they worked hard for their money. Go and do likewise.
There is also the Prive Sector Foundation for Health which was specifically set up for the provision of Health Care Machines and services and to contribute to families in need of financial assistance.
so u know that and after the girl die u saying..y didnot u call matt in the first instance. thanks anyway. i will let sick people who need help know about that
MAY GOD STRENGTHEN YOUR FAMILY
A Better Place
She’s in a better place right now
Than she’s ever been before;
All pain is gone; she’s now at rest;
Nothing troubles her anymore.
It’s we who feel the burden of
Our sadness and our grief;.
We have to cry, to mourn our loss,
Before we get relief.
We know we’ll reconnect with her
At the end of each life’s road;
We’ll see her cherished face again
When we release our earthly load.
DNO, think It would have been best to just focus on the young lady’s life in this article as opposed to hilighting the issue about who provided, what, which was captured in yesterday’s article! My 2 cents.
RIP
money, money money is all that in there head, money
sod sad may yr soal rest in perfect peace my prayers are with the family NJ is praying for you all
When I listened to the playback of the young lady’s contribution on Q95, Im sure she did not want her passing associated with that kind of scandal that went on on Tuesday morning.
We really need to put things in perspective and stop being blinded in our anger and jealousy against one man. Some of us have so many skeletons in our cupboards. If only the world knew what some of us are guilty of, while we cast aspersions at others. MY PEOPLE TAKE A GOOD LONG HARD LOOK IN THE MIRROR.
point is….HE LIED…accept the fact that he lied.
Get out off here! what scandal are you talking about? All the anger and jealousy is not in “our” hearts but just yours.
Yes we took a long hard look and this is what we saw. Someone drinking alcohol ,smoking and driving at top speed, crashed into the sea and her face was torn up, she got immediate assistance to have plastic surgery. Never contributed anything to Dominica but get Infinity vehicle duty free while most Dominicans are struggling to pay health insurance and their surgeries. That is what we see when we look in the mirror. I hope you have a mirror too,or maybe you blind
Sherns we had so much plans, but only God knows he alone knows :(. Watch over us as our guardian Angel, we love you and will truly miss you. Your legacy will live on!!!!
RIP Shernel! You are suffering no more. You are in a better place. Condolences to your family. I am glad that you were not alone and that your Dad was able to be by your side till the end. I am so sad.
Death is never something easy and it is even more difficult when a parents have to bury their young child. She was a God fearing and faithful young woman and her faith in God up to the end illustrates that. Let her parents and family take hope in that fact that if she stayed faithful till the end God will raise her up in the first resurrection. Even in death, God is in control.
The loss of parent, sibling, spouse or child is never easy; however we all have a destined time and Miss Prince time has come. Unfortunately for the ones she left behind this is not an easy transition, as you must now live with this void. I pray that you hold on strong and believe that one day each of you will reunite, as we all must travese the same path. Fill your days with the cherished memories of the times you spent together, and live with the joy of knowing that your loved one will live on eternally in your hearts and memories. Also remember to keep her light shining through your deeds. I pray for strenght and courage for you all. May her soul rest in peace.
Shernel, I’m trying not to cry. All I can say is God knows why. I’ll forever treasure the memories of you. Just hearing your pleasant faint voice saying to us I always wanted to come to your concerts. Imagining your smile as we sang to you and hear you saying no one has ever sang to me before. I’m so glad that we got the chance to minister to you my dear. Remember i promised to get you this book “when God does not make sense”. I never found it. I ask myself, where is God when death strikes to a heart as pure, loving and kind as yours. God sees and knows the things that we can’t. And because he is all powerful and all knowing he called you home for it was your time to leave. You have affected so many lives in such a positive way. Your faith was much more than a mustard seed and I am certain that it was your faith that made you well. I would want us to remember her as the young lady who wanted to go home for Christmas but was too sick to make it. She did not get angry and frustrated. In her conditions she ensured that she brought cheers to the hearts of the other patients around her by giving them gifts. This is the Shernel I will like us to remember. Please please please, Shernel would like nothing more than for us to be united not divided over her death. If there is anything she would say to us it would be “THAT’S OK”. Let’s just remember the kind efforts of ALL Dominicans to ensure she return home. God is in control. HOME FREE!! eventually.
I did not know you personally Shernel but you were right next to my grandmother in the hospital. And in as much pain as u seemed to be u always smiled when I came to visit. You are no longer in pain sweetie. R.I.P.
My sympathy to the family of Shernelle. To the person putting all the thumbs down get hold of yourself and find your conscience.
Rest in peace shernel, my condolences and prayers goes out to the family and loved ones

Who is the retard that give that a thumbs down there awa wi with some dominicans may the young lady’s soul rest in peace am sure she in a better place now
This is really dissappointed, i am truly sorry of the outcome…..
I feel for the family because all that effort to save a life and then………. I am also dissappointed with the system in Trinidad, to refuse to operate because the money was not immediately available is very very sad, in the end God knows best and like the saying goes, the good die young, she was a good girl and i sympathize with the family.
This is very sad, but you cannot be disappointed with the system in Trinidad. That’s the way it is. In the US, sometimes an ambulance cannot take a patient to certain hospitals if they do not have insurance. Before being admitted to a nursing home in Trinidad my mum had to wait in the sitting area while we got a certified bank cheque to pay the deposit of $20,000. Unfortunately, that’s just the way life is.
RIP Ms Prince.
my condolences to shernels prince family.
it will always hve so me evil peopel thats giving thumbs down. stupid set of people. someoneis posting rip and u puttin thumbs down? shait man!
DNO, what kind of Heading is this?? Why not Shernel Prince has died.?? Your heading makes it appear like she was being hunted down and was finally killed.
true that! It scared me this morning!!!!!!!!
Imagine i am in T&T and i went to the hospital to see this girl before her surgery,I had felt so sorry for her,i parayed for her and spoke with her father.
I was so sadden to see all the negative comments and politics Dominicans was talking about here about money and who helping and who not helping while the poor child was there fighting for her life in the hospital…..Dominicans,you should have been praying!!!!!!!!!!! RIP Shernell
To the family and friends of our dear Shernelle. With faith comes the knowledge that our present sorrow is not a permanent loss, that goodbye is only goodbye for now.Someone so special will always live on in our hearts.
Flowers usually comes after the showers. Rest in Eternal Peace. Uncle Fingol.
very kind words
Words cannt express how I fill . That thing killing me .
I am hearing she is not dead, what is happening?
I hope that a lawsuit can be filed against the govt.
Against which government? Lawsuit for wat??????
Lo, mine eye hath seen all [this], mine ear hath heard and understood it.
What ye know, [the same] do I know also: I [am] not inferior unto you.
Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God.
But ye [are] forgers of lies, ye [are] all physicians of no value.
O that ye would altogether hold your peace! and it should be your wisdom.
Hear now my reasoning, and hearken to the pleadings of my lips.
Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.
He also [shall be] my salvation: for an hypocrite shall not come before him.
Hear diligently my speech, and my declaration with your ears.
Behold now, I have ordered [my] cause; I know that I shall be justified.
Who [is] he [that] will plead with me? for now, if I hold my tongue, I shall give up the ghost.
Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and holdest me for thine enemy?
Wilt thou break a leaf driven to and fro? and wilt thou pursue the dry stubble?
For thou writest bitter things against me, and makest me to possess the iniquities of my youth.
Man [that is] born of a woman [is] of few days, and full of trouble.
He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.
Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of God hath touched me.
Oh that my words were now written! oh that they were printed in a book!
That they were graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock for ever!
For I know [that] my redeemer liveth, and [that] he shall stand at the latter [day] upon the earth:
And [though] after my skin [worms] destroy this [body], yet in my flesh shall I see God:
Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; [though] my reins be consumed within me.
But ye should say, Why persecute we him, seeing the root of the matter is found in me?
Be ye afraid of the sword: for wrath [bringeth] the punishments of the sword, that ye may know[there is] a judgment.
FOR THE WRONGFUL DIAGNOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so u saying de government kill her booboo???? u should bnot be there at all this is a time of grief u stretching it now come on….
The government and people of Dominica did their best for this young lady but she had a serious medical condition. Instead of talking we should educate ourselves about the medical condition that cause her to pass on. RIP Shernel

R.I.P SHERNEL, MAY HEAVEN ACCEPT YOU,ANGELS PROTECT YOU AND GOD EMBRACE YOU!
MAY HER SOUL REST IN PEACE! IF THOUGH SHE IS GONE IN THE FLESH, SHE IS STILL WITH US IN THE SPIRIT. SHE LEFT THIS WORLD WITH LOVE IN HER HEART KNOWING THAT MANY PEOPLE REACH OUT TO HER IN HER TIME OF NEED. SO WE KNOW THAT SHE WAS THANKING GOD ALL THE WAY FOR HIS BLESSING.
REST IN PEACE SHERNEL………..
My condolence to the family of Ms. Prince. May her soul Rest In Peace..
The passing away of the physical body in someone who looks so young and beautiful, as the person of Shernel Prince, is not a very pleasant situation to grasp.
However when I read what cancer was already doing to her heart, I perceived that her body had already given up on remaining in this world–if only she could haved believed that her faith would have healed her!
Sad as it may be that she has passed away, there is nothing money or the person/persons, who loved her most of all, can do now.
But I hope that many of us in Dominica will learn to humble ourselves, knowing that God is always in control–regardless of what our profession, skill, or ability is–and so the final decission is His; not man’s!
I say that because I noticed that while some people chanted Amen and Alleluia to the Radio Station and those involved in raising funds for Shernel’s medical treatment–they forgot it was God who needed the Honor and the Praise.
I wondered! Did those people actually believe they were doing Shernel a great favor?
It is possible that a vigil for a few days of sincere prayer, through steadfast faith, could have stopped the decay of Shernel’s body–as Holy Spirit would anoint her with Love, putting her in the gradual process of healing?
For by the stripes of Jesus Christ, we are healed–not by the payment of $100,000.00 for man-made medical service. We ned to keep that in our minds day in and day out.
Some people were saying God bless and God is good etc, etc, but was that not simply word of the lips–especially evidence of money was involved. Apostle Paul tells us the Life is existing by faith and not by sight.
For when God is forgotten, our unfairly flatered throughout our works, no matter waht the greatness of our accomplishments in our minds, that greatness we perceive is stil the lustre of pride and futility–which is not of God.
Anyway I did not know anything about Shernel, but she is now dead in the body; and so, my wish is that she is going to her grave with everything being well with her soul.
For with everything well with her soul, death has no sting on her Spirit and the grave has no victory over her Life with Jesus Christ.
Jesus has told us: “My Father chooses My people for Me and I must raise them on the last day” I wish that Shernel is one of the people God has chosen to have Life through the Son, Jesus Christ–before she passed away.
With that said, I shall sing: In the sweet bye and bye we will meet on that beatiful shore; and in Life or in death O Lord abide with us! Amen!
how much words that there just say you are sory and streach your heart to the family they do not want composition or sa any waye rest in piece shernel
At “Smartest of all” My heart is so big and so full of the warmth of God’s Love, that is the reason I need many words to express it to those around me.
I cannot be as cold as you, to only write a half sentence that still tells Shernel to rest in “piece”
I never say that to a dead person, especially that I never knew them as they existed in this world. But if I did, I most certainly would not suggest that the person rest in “PIECE”–if you know what I mean!
To the family please accept my sympathy. May God strengthen you through this difficult time.
RIP shernel, may your soul rest in peace. sympathy to the family n frens.
Very sad man. I listened to that girl pray last week man, the child could pray.
Shernel became ours man, all of us. GOD bless the family in the time of mourning. Hold strong!
Real sad man. She had such an uplifting spirit.
may your soul rest in peace shernel….my sympathy goes out to the prince family..be strong and continue to put god first….
RIP shernel! While you fought the fight with courage, those who could most likely have made a difference played politics with your life. Your stryggles have once again taught me of how destructive politics can be.
On the other hand, it showed that outside the political arena we still have loving, caring Dominicans like Matt Peltier and the good folks at Q95.
RIP my dear, RIP

GIVE THE GOVERNMENT A BREAK DAMN BREAK. A A…STUPES. as far as was said.she was assisted previously and did not follow procedure to obtain government funding for her second surgery. Sad to see that she did not make it through this one.really sad.CANCER is not an easy disease to deal with.condolences to the relatives and friends. and its not the government or her falt she was sick or died!! GOD IS IN CONTROL
May the young lady rest in peace and may her family find peace during this difficult time.
On another note, Dominicans, this life is very unpredictable, and some of these illnesses are very expensive to treat. Please souplait, as long as you earning some steady income, I urge every Dominican to invest in some medical insurance. I also urge the Government to encourage the insurance companies on island to create affordable and transparent insurance plans for our people.
In this day and age, where diagnoses of cancer, heart disease etc. are on the increase, we just cannot afford to depend on the treasury or radio-thons to take care of your medical expenses. We need to start insuring ourselves.
So true Irie! If you have a job you should have some form of health insurance. Our medical treatment should not be so dependent on the goodness of other.
I can’t help but think that was A LOT of money spent on an operation that was not likely to be a success. A sufferer of terminal cancer should spend their last days in the comfort of their home surrounded by loved ones, not on an operating table.
You’re in a better place now darling, and in the comforting hands of the Lord Almighty. You may rest now, no more pains and suffering my dear. Rest peacefully. The Lord knew why he called you home, another angel to look over us.
A line from the song by Vestal Goodman Dottie Rambo- The Holy Hills Of Heaven
“This house of flesh is just a prison bars of bones.”
Rest in Peace young lady
my condolence goes out to the prince family may her sould r.i.p

i hate all the politics in this country of Dominica
Then leave it out of this forum.
am with u on that one,not only dominica but politics on a worldly basis is shit.my condolences goes out to the family
We have allowed politics to consume us. So sad, because it’s very nature is divisive. And right now, we need to be a united front.
If I could thumbs up that comment 100 times I’d do it. Best comment ever on DNO
what does politics have to do with that? it was not gorvernments responsibility to give, they chose to. that statement shows that you are consumed by politics if thats the best thin you could say instead of sympathizing. it was her time to go end of story.

Father help us! There this girl was fighting for her life and our Dominican tongues were in all politics about who helping and not helping. I hope this will be a lesson for us to pray one for the other. May Jehovah give this family His strength during this time of mourning.
