UPDATE: Bus runs over child in Atkinson

accidentA student of the Atkinson Primary School is now a patient at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) after being run over by a bus.

Nine-year-old Marisca Auguiste received injuries to her pelvic area during the incident which occurred on Monday, April 4, 2016 in Atkinson, according to police PRO, Acting Inspector Pellam Jno Baptiste.

He said it is alleged that about 8:20 am, Auguiste and two other students from the Atkinson Primary School were transported to school on a Toyota Coaster bus, registration number GA357, belonging to the Government of Dominica and driven by Winston Valmond.

On arriving at the Atkinson Primary School, the three children were allowed to disembark the bus.

Jno Baptiste stated that while crossing the public road, Auguiste fell. Not realizing that she was lying on the road, Valmond drove off causing injuries to the nine-year-old.

Auguiste was transported to the Marigot Hospital where she received medical treatment. She was then transported to the PMH where she was examined by a medical doctor and admitted.

Investigations are ongoing, Jno Baptiste said.

What a sad thing to have happen for both the child and the bus driver. I would like to suggest that special mirrors be installed on school buses to allow bus drivers to see the blind-spot at the lower front of the bus.

    • April 9, 2016

The child is wrong to pass at the front of the bus. When the child fell she actually stayed down that’s why the bus driver didn’t see the child. That child was feeling sick the same morning he picked up the child. The parents forced the child to go to school that same morning. That will teach them a lesson, anything can happen.

“This is the Year of Mercy, 2016, Pope Francis proclaimed – God’s mercy and also on those who suffer and are experiencing hardships of every sort. You need to pray to God for His Mercy upon you.”(Facts).

I wish I could simply make you and all of your stupid comments vanish from DNO site. In one of your more foolish comments you claim that no place in the New Testament God Almighty told you to call him by his name Jehovah! However, you have not produced any evidence where the New Testament said we should not.

While you lie trying to defy God, you are talking crap celebrating one of satan tools. What year of mercy are you and this earthly god of yours are talking about? You cannot call Jehovah God by his name, nevertheless you are here talking about some damn pope who is full of sin, one who used cocaine to alter his damn mind. You take pleasure in calling him pope.

Do you know the meaning of pope? “pope,” and I wrote it in lower case letters for a reason. The word pope…

      Cont:

Do you know the meaning of pope? “pope,” and I wrote it in lower case letters for a reason. The word pope simply means papa; or in modern English “father.”

In the Book of Matthew 23: 4 we read ” For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulder; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. That is what your popes and fathers has done to ignorant people like you.

Here is the truth of God: In Matthew 23: 9, 10, 11; I read: “And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father which is in heaven. (10): Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. (11): But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.

So tell me why you and all of you so called ignorant Roman Catholics continue to defy the word of God, and call sinful men with dirty mouths, and belly filled with feces father? You refuse to call the Almighty by his name, yet you keep calling that man “pope”…

      • Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque
        April 6, 2016

You refuse to call the Almighty by his name, yet you keep calling that man “pope” father; when God himself told you do not call any preacher father?

You come with your crap about Francis proclaimed year of mercy. Did he have mercy when he influence the abduction of four of his priest, when he was in his country playing politics, which almost cost their life.

The definition of mercy is simply this: compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone whom it is within one’s power to punish or harm. Had God Jehovah not been a merciful God, showing and exercising mercy, he would have already wipe us all out, by sending the world into oblivion! He would destroy you for all the lies you write on DNO everyday.

Keep you nonsense to yourself and your gods of this earth!

Our God Almighty is as I stated. He is not Jehovah. Non-Christians as Jehovah Witness and Seventh Day Adventist call him that as in the Old Testament. They rejected Our Lord Jesus Christ as our King, Savior and Just Judge.
It appears you do not have a memory. Get this in your thick head and narrow, warped brains.
Catholics call Him and rightfully so, Our Almighty Father. Our Lord Jesus Christ taught us to pray to His (Our) Heavenly Father, as contained in the New Testament: “Our Father who art in Heaven. . . .” This is how we Catholics of all call him, refer to him and pray to him. We are obeying Our Lord Jesus Christ’s commands.
Learn to be kind and respectful to me and others. You are sadly lacking in good manners – etiquette. You have much to learn. One day you will pay for it.
Our Lord told us, “Turn the other cheek. Love our enemies. Do good to those who hate us.” He also said: “Vengeance is Mine. I will repay.” Keep note.

You are not a Catholic Christian. There are many of them in Dominica and elsewhere. If you do not like what I stated, bypass it. Do not criticize my faith and my beliefs. Learn respect.
I also have this much to state to you. The day will come, be it when you are dying and when you die, you will realize what I stated is the truth. God will reveal it to you. I would love to say more but I will not waste my God-given precious allotted time to inform you, critic, anymore.
Nothing people state on this Website could ever please you. You always have to contradict them, you miserable man.

My prays go out to the young lady and her family. A speedy and full recovery. My heart also goes out to Mr. Valmond and his family. I’ve known Mr. Valmond for many years and he is very humble and a good driver.
However, the need to improve safety on the road especially as it relates to school children is an important issue. I must give kudos to the Marigot police for reorganizing the boarding and disembarkation of students at the Concord school. The need for school signs and speed limits in school zones are urgent requirements.

What a sad story! I wish her a complete and very speedy recovery and pray God’s strength on the driver as well as all those involved.

“Auguiste was transported to the Marigot Hospital where she received medical treatment”

Skerrit that he was punising the people of Marigot by causing the once Marigot hospital, to become what is now below the standard of a health center. However, this incident should remind him that he is punishing all of us in Dominica because we never know when we will be driving or spending time in the Marigot area and, to get into an accident or some type of pain. So we should not see it as a marigot problem but a national problem that could affect anyone of us.

      Passing Cloud,

Why is it everything in Dominica is about politics. Can’t we offer comfort and understanding for what the families are going through? Don’t we realize accidents happen and pray instead that God stretches his healing hands over the child; give courage and support to her family and the bus driver and his family. How about the school children who witnessed this horrific accident, could they be traumatize?

We have to stopped all this stupidity, we are better than that as a people.

A few years ago a father was backing his car out of his driveway on his way to work; his young daughter unlocked the front door and ran out of the house to tell her dad goodbye; he did not see her and he ran over his own child. Do you think having 4 hospitals within driving distance and EMS quick response saved her? Can you imagined the distraught father and the family?

Sometimes, I wonder if some of us have blue ink in our veins.

    April 5, 2016

This is sad, I pray for a complete recovery and for strength to the families involved. This sounds as a genuine accident and not as a consequence of reckless behaviour on the part of the driver. Having said that, Large buses like these coasters especially have a number of blind spots and in the case of a nine year old falling in the front of the bus it may have been impossible for the driver to see what happened. a few things come to mind as to how this can be avoided, one of which is ensuring that these govt school buses have a conductor responsible for ensuring that the child crosses the stress safely before the vehicle moves off. Another would be to equip these buses with proximity sensors which would alert the driver. There are countless other ideas out there and I am betting that no one would do anything more than nothing to avoid this type of incident in the future.

  9. Oh boy
    April 5, 2016

The bus is indeed tall, a bus attendant is necessary to ensure the safety of the children, make sure that the coast is clear before take off. I hope the child recovers unblemished she must be in excruciating pain. I feel for the bus driver this is not a nice situation to be in. I hope that all parties cooperate peacefully, now is not a time to fight, blame and make noise. Use this unfortunate situation to make positive changes. Don’t curse just take it easy.

    • Face the Facts
      April 6, 2016

Pertaining to a bus attendant to ensure that all is clear and especially for passengers safety when they get off the bus is a wise suggestion. In those days, Dominica had very few of these types of accidents., if none at all.
I do not know how old you are. However, in bygone years, those wooden buses had an attendant who would check and inform the driver that all is clear and he could drive off. This should be considered. Of course, the driver would have to pay the attendant. The problem today is, it may be expensive to employ one.
      Modern times call for changes.

    • Heartfelt
      April 5, 2016

Crossing in front of buses seems to be the style these days. It is a norm for bus drivers to stretch out their hand to alert drivers coming up from the rear. This is absolute madness. I have seen too many near accidents as a result of this practice and people still don’t learn. Considering that the children are of primary school age I think the bus driver could have been more vigilant in ensuring they were all across the road before driving off.

The driver, I feel for you and what you must be going through that, it is not easy for you. I call this a freak accident. It was unknown to you that she had crossed in front of your bus. You generously gave her a ride and this occurred. May God also assist you to cope with this and grant you peace of heart and mind. He knows that it was not your fault.
I reside in Toronto and this has occurred to children and adults alike. Passengers and pedestrians are warned to wait until the bus passes or to ensure that the bus is at a standstill; any vehicle. The driver cannot always notice that someone crossed in front of the bus.

  16. April 4, 2016

by the news report this appears to be an accident, but there also appears to have an element of carelessness driving without due care and attention. while i am not attributing direct blame, our bus drivers need to put the same value or importance on their local customers just as they do to the foreign tourist.

  17. citizen
    April 4, 2016

Even while we are hopeful that the child gets a full recovery, the vehicle is a G A and to my knowledge most if not all GA, run on the road without insurance, i hope the government is ready to undertake full responsibility for flying the child out of D A for proper medical attention, we not even talking compensation to the parents yet.

  18. Jayson
    April 4, 2016

If bus drivers want to assist children in crossing the road they need to get out of their bus, stand in the road, and then stop any on coming traffic. What most do, is stick out their hand on the drivers side hoping that vehicles will stop, but this can be misinterpreted by oncoming drivers.

Children in Dominica are not taught to cross the road. In European countries, they are taught and drilled from pre-school years. The correct way to cross the road is ONLY when you can see clearly in both directions, looking left and right while you cross. Never cross between parked cars.

Bus drivers are supposed to put the passengers down and then move off. Only after the bus has moved off should the children and/or passengers cross, when they can see that it is clear to cross in both directions. The way the bus drivers are doing in the country, sitting in their vehicles and allowing children to cross either in front or from behind the bus is a very dangerous practice.

I don’t know what you talking about children are not taught to cross road….my class of students were taught to cross the road. I attended the Convent Prep and you know this road how it is busy. I can even remember the female police officer who was conducting the exercise. Her name is Marie Seraphine. She taught us to look up, look down, look up again and THEN cross if no vehicles are approaching.

The Bible said: The fool said in his heart there is no God; I wonder with people like you existing in Dominica is not the cause why there is no blessing on Dominica, I wonder if it is not people like you who caused Dominica to be coursed!

In my book I have written extensively of a curse which lurks over Wesley, and indeed all of Dominica. Reading the ignorant comments from an idiot like you confirms my theory that Dominica is indeed cursed, and that is why there is so much poverty, and crime in the country, that is why Dominica is the most undeveloped and backward place I know.

A lot of you people like to talk about God, while the devil has his long hands up your rectum, this is where repentance (changing) of your mind comes in: Take some time out to study the word of God, perhaps you might come to understand where Jesus is all of the time.

Right now I a am ashamed to be born in…

The answer is blowing in the wind. When you die it will be revealed to you. Those who are baptized Christians always have Jesus with them. You lack this enlightenment and will never comprehend it. I feel sorry for you.

What the hell marigot hospital can do for the kid? This is trauma, every second is of great importance as it will have a telling influence on the survival and quality of said survival. I don’t know how skillful the healthcare personnel are or if there are even appropriate equipment to visualize the scope of damage done in PMH much less Marigot. But I Hope the Youngster survives. Try to be strong those among this child loved ones.

First of all the marigot is the closest hospital so THEREFORE it depends to how bad AN injury is they can treat the patient and transport the individual to pmh
