Caribbean nations are being urged to make disaster preparedness a major priority, particularly after recent earthquakes in the world.

The Caribbean island of Haiti was hard it by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in January, and on February 27, Chile was hit by an 8.8 magnitude quake. There were fears the earthquakes could affect the wider region.

Jeremy Collymore, Director of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) says now is the time for the Caribbean to focus on minimizing risks associated with such disasters.

“We can no longer rest in the comfort that those things don’t happen on this side of the world. The question of preparedness now must be revisited to build on what we have done in relation to tropical storms and hurricanes, and to extend that to other hazards,” Collymore stated.

The CDEMA has said it’s looking to help Caribbean nations become better prepared for natural disasters.

Collymore believes the region may need to examine how it can make better use of its resources to manage the risks posed by natural disasters.

This truly demonstrates that the Disaster Emergency Management Agency cares!

Hopefully Dominica will recognize and act upon their prudent advise!
