A police officer attached to the coast guard died suddenly on Monday.
The officer, identified as Cpl. Kerwin Matthew, from Bense, died at the Princess Margaret Hospital at around 7:30 pm, according to police PRO, Inspector John Carbon.
Matthew was the chief engineer of the coast guard base.
DNO understands Matthew had complained of chest pains and was reportedly diagnosed with a trace of bronchitis.
Carbon said he served with the police force for 24 years and was a committed and dedicated officer at his job at the coast guard base.
A post mortem will be performed then details of the funeral will be given subsequently, Carbon said.

If I remember Kerwin he would say don’t cry for me. I’m OK. But, we just cannot help it. What a shocking news. Such a young, ambitious, respectful and committed guy. I admired his ambitions. If it is Kerwin’s call it is definitely a time to celebrate his life and appreciate all the pleasantness he cultivated among us. He sure made his mark.
To the entire Matthew family I would like to say PEACE. It is normal to mourn but Kerwin is a guy we should all celebrate. I believe God secures his people first. We are all hurting inside and outside. You are not alone.

In death, as in life, there are teachable moments that we should not miss and here is an opportunity to highlight what I consider a short-coming and unfair treatment. Here was “a committed and dedicated” servant who served the CDPF for 24 years, spanning 3 different ruling political parties, 5 Prime Ministers and ultimately serving as chief engineer of the Coast Guard, yet, he only made it to the rank of Corporal! Anyway it is a chest cold. I did not look it up but I have heard this word many times which is attributed to having a cold with a cough. I think it also affects the throat and lungs. Your voice could be hoarse from coughing.
