A farmer from Wesley escaped serious injury in an accident which took place in Wesley on Friday at around 4:00 pm.
Reports are that the vehicle he was driving left the road, ran down a hill, knocked out part of a kitchen and ended in a yard in an area called “Poor Man’s Corner.”
DNO understand that the farmer was on his way from his farm on his pick up truck when the brakes reportedly stopped working.
Owner of the kitchen, Onnarose James, told DNO she was standing on the step on her house when she heard a strange sound.
When she looked in the direction of the sound, she saw the pick up hurtling down the hill and heading towards her kitchen.
James said at the same time her husband was heading into the kitchen but she shouted an alarm to him.
Somehow the vehicle managed to swerve away, knocking only a part of the kitchen, she said.
The pick up was seriously damaged but the farmer was unharmed.
A section of James’ kitchen was damaged and galvanize sheets ripped off.
“Thank God there was no death,” she said.
please be kind of others feelings, and yes the kitchen is fixed and ready to go! That man is not just a farmer his is a builder too, and yes he is blessed.
Note how an accident could occur and when we least expect it. There are times we call them freak accidents.
What a shock this was for the home owners; also for the driver of the vehicle. Thank God none were injured. The farmer was extremely fortunate that his wife observed the oncoming vehicle, no doubt in shock and alerted him just in time.
I have heard/read some vehicles leave the street and crash into homes and also in restaurants. They also crash into bus stops which either kill or injure someone waiting for a bus.
It is also known for drivers to crash and then take off, some of them in police pursuit. Some reasons may be due to a stolen vehicle, driving without a license or intoxicated, etc. If the drivers are at fault, as for careless driving and driving under the influence, they will be arrested. A breathalyzer test is conducted. Some will later turn themselves in.
We hear and read it all in amazement and shake our heads and say strange things happen.
I do not want anybody to suggest I am cold because of the comments I make; nevertheless, the kind of raggedy thing the boys in Wesley drive around, its a wonder there are not many more accidents in the village. One time I visited home, and a nephew of mine was driving me somewhere.
The kid said uncle I have to get some gas now, to my surprise the man gas tank was a five gallon container behind my back with a long rubber hose attached to a line on his carburetor. He disconnected the regular tank because it was leaking. The man and his Swedish born wife drove around with it like that for a long time. An arch from anywhere could have blown them to bits. (I doh critiquing eh), because I have nieces living in Poor-man Corner, and I do not know those involved might be me very own (And here is how we called that place when I grew up): “Pooman Karner.”
Poor mans corner? sorry for what happens we can always build back. Thanks God lives were not lost. lets assist he home owner to repair his damaged kitchen. Im first on line.
So, who is going to pay for all the damage to the house? The farmer?? Not in DA.
If he has home insurance which covers such accidents, this insurance will pay for it. However, the insurance will first have to conduct an investigation. This includes the police investigation into this vehicle if as the driver stated the brakes gave way or if whether the vehicle was road worthy and other factors. In any case, I do think the driver may have to pay something, be it a portion or the full amount for repairs. Someone is responsible for compensating the home owners. The result of the investigation(s) will determine who pays a portion and/or all of it.
Noting that this accident and damage are not the homeowners fault, they must be fully compensated for the damage to their house.
I also thought, hopefully the driver has insurance for his vehicle. If so, his insurance should cover the cost of repairs of the house and inconvenience, etc. to the owners of the house.
Take photos of the Truck
When ever the normal break pedal refuses to react if possible lower the gear and use the hand break ,nonetheless a vehicle with weight takes a longer time to break especially when going down a hill, luckily all is well with every one who could be a victim in this accident..
Praises to God Almighty that no harm was done to anyone. Thank you Jesus
Thanks God he and others are ok very lucky guy.
A few years ago, the government of Dominica fell victim to complaints from a few large dealerships in Dominica by imposing a stiff tax on the importation of vehicles that are older than five years. The “Appeasing Tax” was named as an environmental tax. These dealerships complained mainly because the ordinary Dominican was able to bypass their high prices and purchase a “Reconditioned Vehicle,” at lower cost, when compared to astronomical dealership prices.
Unfortunately, no mandates were set to scientifically determine how many parts per million of carbon monoxide will be deposited into the environment from these older vehicles.
This was a perfect opportunity to implement a new system that would not only check carbon monoxide outputs, but a vehicle’s road worthiness as well.
By blaming every accident on driver negligence, we omit important variables such as a vehicle’s road worthiness.
Those vehicles should still be inspected by the authorities for road-worthiness.
“All vehicles” should be inspected by an experienced mechanic before they are certified to be road worthy.
I’ve been saying for years that Dominica needs to implement a new sound method to determine a vehicle’s road worthiness. The days of a traffic officer checking lights, signals and brakes are outdated.
Every vehicle should be inspected by an experienced mechanic before it is deemed road worthy.
In so doing, vehicles that do not meet inspection standards must be repaired before they are allowed back on the road. It’s practical and sensible. A vehicle is a complex machine. Without proper maintenance, it will fail over time.
Scary situation….thank goodness no lose of life nor injuries otherwise.
