Road fatality in Kalinago Territory

police do not crossInformation reaching Dominica News Online(DNO), indicates that a woman from the Kalinago Territory was killed this morning after being struck by a moving vehicle.

Reports are that 39 year-old Ursuline Frederick, also known as ‘Barbie’, was walking along the main road in the territory when she was hit by the vehicle.

DNO has been able to confirm that Frederick died while being transported to the Princess Margaret Hospital in Roseau.

Reports are that she was hit by a vehicle driven by Simon George of Riviere Cyrique.

We’ve not been able to get a full official police report on the matter but Police Asistant Superintendent, Ainsworth Irish, told  DNO that he had received word of the accident and the police were investigating.

Dominica News Online will bring you more information as it becomes available.

I just want to say that my dad is a very cautious driver. He is usually very careful on the road and I am really sorry that his unfortunate accident occurred. I am sure he is as well. Please do not jump to conclusions folks. Condolence to Ms. Frederick’s family.

My heart always go out for those children crossing the streets after school. The drivers are so reckless when driving there, especially when trying to go to the airport.

I ddi dnot read anything about how the accident happen, so whyt is it that everybody giving their two sense about what they think should happen and who suppose to do what and all that. We Dominicans like to jump to conclusions, lets wait to hear what really happened and them we can make proposals and or advice the people who cleary do not want any advice. We do not know if the person jumped in front of the vehicle, we do not know if the perso driving was drunk, we do not know if the vehicle brake line cut and it could not stop, we just don’t know, so let us wait before we make useless comments.

Blood alcohol test should be done on all victims of vehicular accidents, as well as on “ALL” drivers involved in such accidents. Else, any police investigations whould have started in the middle, and not at the beginning; ending with doubts and makeups. Dominicans are RUM DRINKERS.

I feel sorry for the friends and family of the deceased. But listen nuh! Dominicans are adopting all the Americans ways and lifestyle. One of which is not giving vehicles room, taking all their time to cross the street/road etc. Not good. Metal and flesh is like water and oil. Dem no mix.

Really? Pedestrians “not giving vehicles room” is an American thing? There are proper sidewalks in the states… proper sidewalks and crosswalks and crossing signals are all over the US… Trust me they use them, otherwise they will be run over.

say it again . even school children crossing on the pedestrian crossing like they walking in their bed room , man I never see. some of them even stop and bbing away. And the scoter guys always busy and want to overtake on the left side. task force and traffic police need to go on a scooter and bike check and get them and crush them then export the metal for recycling.

Looking through the comments I am always concerned at the amount of dislikes for comments that are plain and simple ‘common sense’. However, common sense is not always ‘common’. As for Bounty’s comment about what has street lighting got to do with it? Bounty, use your common sense – that’s all I say. And thanks to those who had to explain it to you. The bottom line is that drivers drive too fast, drink too much and have little concern for their passengers or fellow road users. The ignorance must stop. Attitudes must change overall by everyone. We are all responsible for change.

On hearing further news , the driver admitted that he fell asleep behind the wheel…This could’ve happened to anyone. Be careful drivers, if you feel sleepy its best to rest then go again rather than driving and causing accidents.

The government need to put some stricter laws in place to take care of people travelling on our roads, but yet again there are no laws in dominica, the place is inside out. DNO stated that the accident is being investigated therefore no one knows what really occurred. However, I am wondering, at that early hour of the morning when it was dark, was she walking on the road and the driver was not able to see her. Are there witnesses or even one who could verify what truly occurred?
If this is done in Dominica, as part of the investigation, the police could check the speedometer and mileage of the vehicle to determine whether he was speeding.
It is sad that she was hit by the vehicle and later died. My sincere sympathy to her family. It is a great loss for them. May her soul rest in peace. Amen!

I always see the billboards here in the US that say children struck at 30 mph have an 80% chance of survival 30 mph plus 70% chance. Da need some kind of restriction in place. U drive as u please. Drink as you please. 1 life loss is too many.

    • May 26, 2013

The cause of the accident have not been determined. We do not know if the victim was not at fault. Sometimes the victims are at fault. It is a sad day for the victims family regardless.

      May 26, 2013

      that is so true….
all this accidents happening island wide and nothing still being done to get the laws up and running….
where r the police patrol bikes on the highways, more speedbumps, speed meters on stretches of roads, ticket those who wrecklessly speed and overtake in wrong places….wish they could see those who use cel phones and drive or text and drive…esp the busdrivers…..get ur act together police, traffic department etc and there will be definitely less accidents and more careful and cooperative drivers…

“Children struck at 30 mph have an 80% chance of survival.” Are you sure that’s what the “billboard” said??? check it again and let Frabo know. Cause i can jam you at 10 mph and you could be no more. OK! you mean children struck by a mosquitoe traveling 30 mph have an 80% chance of knowing what struck them?

I wonder what has street lights got to do with a traffic accident that happened in broad daylight?

    • rip
      May 26, 2013

The news report said This Morning. It could have been at 3am. The person was only suggesting this because there’s a lot of places where pedestrians may walk..residential areas..that’s just dark. And a vehicle may not see that persons depending on where they are – close to the brow of a corner etc etc. I think that persons may have been saying that street lights could help in certain areas so that you and I as drivers could have a better view of certain parts of the road that your headlights don’t project on. Just respect someone else’s opinion. R.I.P tho.

      May 26, 2013

It will only stop when a
‘goh bouge’ becomes a fatality. Them drivers do not want to be cautious, make an example of one of them, for they continue to kill pedestrians and walk away scott-free. This is dam nonesense now.

      • Anonymous
        May 27, 2013

You should not make such statements without knowing the facts. It could be due to either the driver’s or the pedestrian’s carelessness, or could also be neither. Such accidents are regrettable because there is loss of life and we sympathize with the family, but don’t simply criticize drivers without knowing the facts. So many times people see vehicles and still stroll across the road. I doubt this was the case here, but we don’t know. Let us pray for her family, but also for the driver and his family because this is hard to deal with as a driver – I know from experience.

    • May 26, 2013

Did you witness the accident? Wait to get more details on what may have happened before making accusations.

honestly speaking, drivers are never gonna take care on the roads….we need the law to get their act together….enforce laws and be out there enforcing the laws….i only see police out when theres a raid or at lunchtime in the city…the rest of the island exists u kno….on the way home to possie from town…is a crzi bus ride…..we r jus so lucky..thank God…but these bus drivers need to stop racing each other and driving wrecklessly…..there needs to be an organization incharge of the bus system…and laws enforced on bus drivers, they are rude, drive crzi, dont take no care for the persons they carry or pedestrians….i hope the traffic dept, transport board and police are reading these posts we are puttn up..or else our suggestions and our frustrations are just wasted here

careless driving that causes accident and kill people walking alongside the road or crossing the road should be considered as manslaughter and drivers should pay the penalty and it is time to test people to find out if they driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and their penalty should be greater
