Fire destroys homes in Zicack, Morne Prosper

The fire in Zicack this morning

Two fires in Morne Prosper destroyed two houses and left four people reeling while a house in Zicack was partially destroyed, also by fire.

PRO of the Dominica Fire Service Philbert Samuel said fire officers from the Fire Service Headquarters responded to a report of a fire in Morne Prosper at around 3:56 this morning.

Samuel reported, “Upon arrival the officers met a two-bedroom house constructed of concrete and imported lumber completely ablaze. The house belonged to Glenis Isles and was occupied by a family of three, Ali Eusebe, Aliani Eusebe and Shanize Maximere. The building and its contents were completely destroyed.”

Meantime, while the officers were concluding their firefighting efforts at that location they were alerted to another fire in the vicinity, at a house belonging to Tony Isles. That building was also completely destroyed.

Samuel stated, “The causes of both fires are under investigation and the Service has not yet ruled out the possibility of arson.”

In related news a fire in Zicack, Portsmouth early this morning has caused major damage to a home and left the three occupants reeling and some of their belongings destroyed.

According to Samuel at around 6.05 this morning, fire officers of the Portsmouth Fire Station responded to call of a fire in the Zicack area. They arrived to find a concrete and lumber house ablaze.

The home was occupied by Shanika Hallsborough, Evelyn Hallsborough and Shermyra Lendon. None of the three occupants were injured in the fire. Due to the efforts of the firefighters the building was only partially destroyed.

Samuel reported that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

I am sorry to read about your loss. I do hope that they have fire insurance and other types of insurance. Pleased to know that no one was injured. Take heart. God bless you and comfort you.
I am wondering if these fires were through natural causes.
I do hope the Police investigation will be thorough and eventually determine the cause of the fire.

JUST A SUGGESTION PLZZZ BECAUSE OF THE DISTANCE AND TERRAIN OF OUR BEAUTIFUL BELOVED LAND DONT YOU THINK SOMETIMES CALLING THE FIRE N AMBULANCE IS OF NO HELP THRU NO FAULT OF THEIRS.. WE NEED A VILLAGE OR SOMETHING ELSE TO DEAL WITH FIRE..AT LEAST A FIRE HINDRANT A FEW PLACES IN EVERY VILLAGE SO VILLAGERS CAN USE TO EXTINGUISH A BLAZE B4 THE FIRE SERVICE SHOWS UP..TRUST ME MOST TIMES OR EVERY TIME IF THE FIRE IS NOT IN THE TOWNS THEN TO BAD FOR THE BURNING BUILDING.LET’S TRY THAT AS A COUNTRY..SOMETHING TO LOOK AT..

      “A fire hydrant.”
However I do agree with your views and suggestions. This is something the government should look into seriously without much ado and implement.
I understand that when a fire occurs, people panic and do not know what to do.
The government should train people in fire prevention and how to quickly put out a fire.

    * CORRECTION _ sentence should read “There is an appeal….” not “THEIR”

  11. Practical
    October 6, 2011

Newee..thanks for the correction but it really does not matter whose house it is or how many children the owner has overseas and home. The fact is a family has lost everything and this could have been a fatal blow for their families. Ma Coralie could have been morning her daughter and grand children today!

DNO please get your info up to date and facts straight. Fistly, the family surname is “HOLSBOROUGH” and secondly, “THEY LOST EVERYTHING IN THAT FIRE” 14 yr old Shermyra has lost all her school books, wear and so forth. Their is an appeal to help them restore their lives and goods, especially the young lady get back to school.

since the fire service seem to get the shitty end of the stick, according to some of the comments posted here,i think the fire service should start an education drive based on home safety and environment everyday activities, because i mean like two to three houses getting burnt is like a record man,for years this types of disasters been taken shape in dominica, and it is like out a hand, with had fatalities where parents live their children home alone with a lamp or candle burning, and then the ugly head of death shows up,i really think people need to be made aware of the simple things that can cause fires and thus heartache, pain and misery, let me also add people should learn to respond to that type of situation, not just depend on the fire service to show up,do the human water chain, old school.

 de fire department could have done there job but because of domlec that gave poor service the firlfighter couldn’t have out d fire. It had an electrical wire sparking.that was jus poor service but everyone is ok my heart goes out to the family stay strong

    • concern child
      October 7, 2011

do you think that domlec is just sitting by the phone waiting for some one to call to report a fire. domlec is not the fire service and they should be trained to handle live wires since they are usually the first responding to the fire

    October 6, 2011

Dear ADMIN…….the name is Glenis Isles..in addition the the firefighters did nothing to out the fire….they had no water!
the second fire was not in the vicinity of the first fire it is very far apart!!!
The fire service in dominica is very poor…how can u come to put out a fire at 3:56am(approximated time) and have no water or a water hydrant in the vicinity. all they were doing is standing watching the fire until it out by itself…..it also alleged that the fire in portsmouth happened very close to the fire station and yet still the figher fighters took hours to come

The emergancy services in Dominica is a joke.

The same applies to the ambulance service that has to come from Roseau to deal with a case in Salisbury.

They might as well rename it to Roseau Fire Department and Roseau Ambulance Service. If you have a true emergancy outside the Roseau area, you would be dead before they render assistance.

They should have benchmarks on the amount of time it should take for the emergency services to arrive at a call and have stations in various parts of the country to meet those benchmarks.

Safety always seems to be an afterthought in Dominica.

When it comes to fete and party, everybody cares. When it comes to the real important issues, no one seems to care until they are in a pickle.

Have you seen the road to Morne Prosper? How did can a firetruck speed up that hill. I agree the emergency services are terrible here. Even in my village there is no fire hydrant, so if my house was on fire they would have to bring water. This country is building itself from the top down. It must crumble, it have no foundation.

Stop putting Jesus in that, he is not the Creator. Stop the polytheism and blasphemy.

      • Justice and Truth
        October 7, 2011

        @ Abu

Who are you? Jesus is not the Creator? He said “I AM. Before Abraham CAME I AM. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.” What does this tell you?
How ignorant are you in the faith of Christianity?
It is said that God became man. He came to earth.
There is God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit – The Triune God – All Three in One.
This may be difficult for you to fathom and comprehend because it appears that you may not have been taught or that you renounced your Christian faith. Nevertheless, whatever your views, you cannot change a thing. Accept it.
I always state that when you (we) die the truth of the matter will unfold. Some will be elated and stand in awe that they believed for all eternity. Others who do not believe will regret it eternally where there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
IT IS BETTER TO BELIEVE THAN NOT TO BELIEVE…

      October 6, 2011

It is very very sad, but Please allow me to correct you, it is NOT Ma Coralie House…. whoever she may be!! The house belonged to Mr and Mrs Casimer Isles (deceased) and as such was the lawful property of their 7 children both here in Dominica and abroad…. check your facts…. I regret the position of the occupants of the house at the time of the fire and we give thanks tot eh Almighty that they are safe and well.
