Five reported dead as Dorian ravages Bahamas

Bahamian PM Hubert Minnis during a live news conference

Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said initial reports indicate that the devastation in the Abaco Islands is “unprecedented” and many buildings have been “completely or partially destroyed.”

“We are in the midst of a historic tragedy in parts of our northern Bahamas,” Minnis told reporters at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) headquarters on Monday.

He said a number of injured people have been rescued by first responders and taken to a hospital on New Providence island.

“Our mission and focus now is search, rescue and recovery. I ask for your prayers for those in affected areas and for our first responders,” CNN reports Minnis as saying.

While I am very saddened by the death of the five persons that died and the massive destruction caused in the Bahamas by Dorian, I dear say that had it been Dominica that got hit by Dorian and sat over Dominica for as long as he sat over Bahamas, the death toll in Dominica would have been many many more and the destruction would have been much more. As I listened to the press briefing of Prime Minister Hubert Minnis, I took note of how he was quick to point out that the US Coast guard was already present in Bahamas and was busy saving and rescuing lives. That’s what Roosevelt Skerrit denied in Dominica during Erika and Maria, while our people were suffering, drowning, dying and helpless. I don’t understand how a Prime Minister would deny help to save lives. How dare you put politics before people

While it is sad the PM confirmed five deaths so far, I must say that it’s a blessing that only five died during that dangerous storm. I give kudos to the Government and PM of Bahamas for bringing in the US coast guard right away to help rescue many persons that were stranded. Had it not been for that move I have no doubt the death toll would increase significantly. That’s what Roosevelt Skerrit refused during Erika and Maria, which I believe caused many more people to die. No government that put people first would refuse help from the US during such devastating storms. Is only careless, selfish and evil governments that will put politics ahead of life

Why don’t you all get a real life? You all need to see a real doctor. Something is certainly wrong with you devilish UWP supporters. I guess you all go to sleep and wake up with politics on your mind. And DNO puts up with this nonsense of yours.
