A funeral for Senior National Cricketer Kelvin Toussaint will be held on Friday next week at the San Sauveur Catholic Church from 3 p.m.
Thirty-year-old Toussaint died while travelling on the Castle Bruce highway on a pickup on Friday last week. The incident occurred in the evening when the vehicle veered off the road and plunged into a precipice. This was Dominica’s first road fatality for the year. The driver, Johnson Bannis and a second passenger, Keron Robin sustained injuries.
Toussaint’s sister, 28-year-old Shanda, described him as a very outgoing person, who was enthusiastic about cricket.
Shanda told Dominica News Online that the news of her brother’s death was unbelievable.
“I was out with friends and I didn’t believe it at first … when someone called me to tell me about that, I just laughed it out and I was just talking to my sister and she didn’t know about it. I didn’t believe he was dead until the doctor pronounced him dead,” the young woman explained.
According to her, no one can explain how the accident occurred.
“There was nobody there to say exactly what happened. What we do know is that the vehicle went down the precipice and he was the only one who died,” Shanda noted.
The news hit other families hard; particularly her father whom she says has taken the news to heart and continues to be quite emotional.
Other relatives in mourning include two sisters, a brother and another adopted brother.
“I would like to say thanks for all the calls, the e-mails, the messages left on DNO on behalf of me and my family,” Shanda said.
Meanwhile, President of the Dominica Cricket Association (DCA) Emmanuel Nanthan recalled Toussaint as someone who tried his best in the sport.
Nanthan managed Toussaint a few years ago. Toussaint played for the Senior National Cricket Team, as well as the St. Joseph, Cottage and Harris Northern Cricket League Teams.
“It was quite sad when I learnt of the death of Mr. Toussaint because not too long ago he assisted me in a road incident myself … when I heard of the accident I was quite saddened and shocked by the sudden death,” Nanthan told a Dominica News Online reporter.
He expressed his condolences to Toussaint’s family and friends during their time of bereavement on behalf of the entire national cricket team. “We want to really wish his family well as they go through this period of bereavement. Someone who was very simple in his ways but someone who really put his all forward in what it is he did… It’s quite saddening that his time here has been cut short by a tragic accident,” Nanthan surmised.

Just heard the news and felt sick to my stoamch.I went to school(G.S.S) with kelvin and he was such a kool guy cannot believe that he is gone but the good ones a always taken away from us much too soon.My deepest sympathy goes out to his friends and family who is left to grieve the lost.I know how it feels as i experienced the lost of my relative in the same manner almost 10 years ago.The feeling of lost never goes away but with time we learn to cope with his absence.

Kelo i remembered playing against you in a finals (S.M.A vs G.S.S) where you scored a century against us and you totally dominated us in that game. May your family get all the strength and courage that they need in this time of need.

Accept my deepest sympathy on the death of this handsomesome and potential young brother. Bi looking at the picture, as the sister said, it appears that he was really outgoing. I know how it must be for the family since his death was sudden. What makes it worse is that no one knows how his death occured even though there were other passengers in the vehicle. Be strong and comfort yourselves. God is able to keep and strengthen you at this time of loss.
