Houses damaged in Indepedence Street fire

Fire officials say overheated Christmas lights may have been the cause of a fire on Independence Street late Saturday.

Two buildings were damaged by the fire and the officials are warning residents that they should practice safety measures at all times, especially during the festive season.

“Beware during the Christmas season … we know that during that time a lot of people use electricity and conduct other practices. Please remember safety comes first in all our activities and we should pay a lot of attention to the use electricity during that time and practice safety at all times,” fire services PRO Wayne Letang cautioned.

He said the fire occurred at about 10:30 pm on Saturday.

“We received a call for Fire, at Independence Street. There were two buildings involved … one was a wooden building owned by Dorothy David and son Curtis Cuffy who were out at the time,” he said.

A second building nearby suffurered minor damage to the outside walls, Letang said.

An investigation into the fire continues.

The lights and other appliances should be tested by the Bureau and the Electrical Department…esp those bein sold at the Chinese stores…they r faulty, they melt and are hazards…Dominicans should stop buying the crap that those ppl sell to them!

If it pertains to the Christmas tree, cooking and baking has nothing to do with it. We are told to turn off the Christmas tree lights when going to bed and when going out. If it is a ‘green, natural Christmas tree’, it should be placed in a container of water. The Christmas tree lights or the connection cord could have caused the fire. There was a fault in either one.
