Juvenile dies five days after traffic accident in Newtown

A 17-year-old male who had been involved in a traffic accident at Newtown last Saturday, has succumbed to his injuries.

The young man, who was reportedly in a coma for some time, died last night.

Police Public Relations Officer Inspector Claude Weekes initially reported that the young man collided with a bus at about 1 a.m. while riding a motor cycle in the vicinity of All Nation’s Bar.

While the bus driver sustained minor injuries, the juvenile motorcyclist received life threatening injuries and was transported to the Princess Margaret Hospital to receive medical attention.

as far as i am concern you have to be 18 to drive in dominicA

I completely agree that we should never rejoice for the passing of someone, especially in such a tragic way. However, it is becoming a very well known culture in Dominica that bikers, more-so the young ones, do not practice enough safety and precaution on the roads. Please people, do not let these lives be gone in vain. Let us learn from their mistakes. Bus drivers are also very very negligent on the streets. Their mode of driving I’ve noticed is very careless. So when too careless people meet on the same street it’s very possible that an incident occurs.
Please note, the word ACCIDENT insinuates that it’s most likely no-one’s fault. That’s why I rather call something like this a Traffic Incident, because I definitely feel someone’s to blame here, but his isn’t the time.
Again, to the family of the deceased, my most sincere condolences. You are right, most people don’t know what it’s like getting that call and saying that a family member is dead; then again, some of us do.

My cousin/Godson, Kevin Joseph is the name of this wonderful, fun, loving young man who came into our lives with such joy and so quickly was taken. We will miss you and will never forget you.
Thank you to those who were there to comfort him in his time of need, thank you to those who left good responses. May his soul rest in peace.

  20. February 13, 2010

Thank you very much for all those positive comments. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family and friends of the deceased.
What i don’t undertand is why don’t our people select the proper venue to do their
political bashing? Everything has it’s time and place, this is a tme for respect and sympathy for those who are grieving for their loved one,
By the way the word is trauma not tremor. This is not a vocano nor an earthquake.

My condolences go to the family and friends of this young man. I too had my Son passed almost in that similar way. One never expect to bury a child. Please find comfort in those times you had together, memories do a lot of healing, plus time will heal your wounds.
From one who has experience it. God bless .

I was the one who called the ambulance at 1:13 AM they came to the scene of the accident within 20-25 minutes by that time a reasonable crowd had gathered. The motorcycle was travel ling northwards just alongside the popular ALL NATIONS BAR & RESTAURANT IN HARLEM, he was on his extreme left side of the road. At the point of the collision the bus was not on his side and was located on the extreme right side of the road. Hence the motorcyclist hit the right side of the bus shattering the windscreen and made a complete 180 degree turn facing south and facewards alongside the gutter. This young-man bled profusely through his ears, mouth and vomited through his nostrils. He lay motionless facing the ground with his legs/hip in a twisted/contortionist and completely hopeless condition. My heart went out to this young-man. It was quite an agonizing and absolutely disturbing moment for al who were there. Some of those who were close to him and was present at the scene of this accident just could not contain their emotions and tempers flared. After much difficulty the ambulance personnel lead by Michael Riley took all the precautions and placed his tortured remains unto the ambulance.

Its in fact a huge miracle that this guy in the prime of his youth did not die on the spot. I have to take this opportunity to offer sympathies to his family and loved ones. I feel part of your pain. Some persons have issued blame game and even tried to politicize this matter. You were not there and the hospital should be commended for the job which they did. God took him out of his miseries because even if he had survived he could well have been in a vegetative state but that again raises ethical issues. There has been calls for the enforcement of the laws as per helmets and I do believe that the police must begin to issue tickets in this regard. We have to protect persons against themselves. There is also a great degree of disrespect that is directed against motocyclist by some other chauffeurs and we maybe becoming a country in which there is the adoption of a culture of MOTOMURDERS and our traffic laws must be strengthened to protect motorcyclists; because while we all plead for helmets as a justifiable safeguard but in some instances helmet makes precious little difference.

DEATH COMES TO US AS A BIG CRUEL SILENT THIEF and our day will come when we get that call that our loved ones may be in some accident; so its never a time to rejoice; lets show our love and humanity and show support to the family/friends. I do not the youngman but its my very humanity which caused me to come to his assistance that night, I couldnt set idly by as some spectator when this guy was in his moments of greatest need. Other persons assisted ( d redslkin chap) to get other vehicles off the road when the ambulance was approaching and leaving the area. Persons also offered help to the fire and ambulance workers and cooperated in many important respects.

MAY THIS GUY REST IN PEACE

When will you motorcyclists wear helmets????? They do save lives you know!

  26. February 13, 2010

    To

Fbd ; CI and saddended. Thank you for your words. We are trying to be strong for each other. But it is very hard when someone so young dies, especially when you as a family did not expect it. You have no idea what it feels like, when some calls you and 3 in the morning to left you know your family member has died.

To all the other haters out there, remember death knows no race, financial status or religion. So please be careful with your words. Cause as they say you never know when ” your own oil will fry you”

  27. February 13, 2010

@GA200 Tremor equipment is for the Seismologists and they have them installed all around the Island but there are more Monitors in the North so maybe they should have got one fromthere? By the way check how many young people die in the so-called “bigger” countries on Bikes and you will reliase that our young ones should exercise better control and safety and our fatal accidents will be reduced.

Let’s this be another lesson to bikers: WEAR “PROTECTIVE GEAR AT ALL TIMES” and “SLOW DOWN”.

  30. February 12, 2010

that how we have to end up when our hospital is not equipt . skerro you should used allthe moneies you spend inthe election to put tremor equiptment a the hospital. You see wicked domincan that take the people health money and come on a voting spree trip.

  31. February 12, 2010

my sympathy goes out to the family of that young man , i hope the other motor cyclist”s on the island will exercise more caution when maneuvreing through traffic . although am not blaming that guy for reckless riding , i had an experience while on ur island last year july where a crazy rider overtook me on my left side , damaging the rental car i was driving and to make matters worse he did not even stop , so am just appealing to these guys to be a lot more carefull by doing that they might even save their own lives.

Although death is the only thing we are certain of, it is always very sad to read of the death of someone from home, especially that of a young person. Rest in peace young man, and may wonderful memories of your life bring courage and strength to your family and friends who are left behind to morn your death.
