Leave a legacy that will inspire others – Monsignor William Jno Lewis

The wreath-covered tomb where Kurt Matthew was finally laid to rest

“Leave a legacy that will inspire others” Catholic priest, Monsignor William Jno Lewis urged all Dominicans as he delivered the homily at the funeral service for the late Kurt Matthew.

Matthew, who was the Station Engineer of the Dominica Broadcasting Corporation, DBS, died after being hit by a bus on the E.O. Leblanc Highway in Canefield on November 26. He was buried on Saturday, December 15.

“What will matter is not what you bought but what you built, not what you got but what you gave; what will matter is not your success but your significance; what will matter is not what you learned but what you taught; what will matter is every act of integrity, courage, compassion or sacrifice that enriched, empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example; what will matter is not your competence but your character; what will matter is not how many people you knew but how many will feel a lasting loss when you’re gone,” Monsignor Jno Lewis told the hundreds of people who attended the funeral at the Fatimah Church in New Town.

Referring to the words of the Apostle Paul from the Book of Colossians in the Bible, Monsignor Jno Lewis exhorted the congregation to put on the dressing of integrity, love and holiness.

“He (St. Paul) says as God’s chosen ones, Holy and Beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness and patience. Bear with one another and if anyone has a complaint against you, forgive each other just as the Lord has forgiven you, so also, you must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love which binds everything together in perfect harmony and, let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts to which indeed you were called into one body and be grateful,” Monsignor Jno Lewis proclaimed.

The death of the 48-year-old Matthew sent shockwaves throughout Dominica. He became known for his courageous efforts in keeping DBS Radio on-air during and immediately after the passage of Hurricane Maria. His work was acclaimed by many and he was recognized by the radio station and other business places

    Very powerful sermon.

These are the kinds of sermons we need to hear more of. Our society is changing for the worst as the aquisition of material things and status, supperceed man’s decency and contribution to society. The great mahatma Ghandi warned us about the corrupting power of the worship of wealth, and the need for simplicity, but we still went down that road. Rest in peace Kurt. You have made your contribution.

Although he was rather young, yet he has left a legacy for the youth to emulate. It is a very sad time for loved ones, friends and colleagues and the nation on a whole but what is very important and should not be forgotten is that he did accomplish his mission while he was with us, especially after hurricane Maria.
Once again, my deepest condolences to his family. Although he is not present in the physical realm,I know that he will never be forgotten. PEACE Family!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
