A man, who was involved in a major road accident under the Canefield Cliff earlier this week, has died.

He has been identified as Calvin Williams, 52, of Wesley.

Williams was the bus driver of a Toyota Hiace bus, registration number HE576, which was involved in the accident.

He was among sixteen people, including a 10-month-old baby and a 70-year-old, who sustained injuries.

Police PRO Claude Weekes stated that Williams died at the Princess Margaret Hospital where he was a patient.

According to him, investigations continue and a post mortem is expected to be conducted to be followed by a coroner’s inquest.

Rest in peace Calvin aka “Castro”. You were very outspoken and its very sad that you were killed in such a brutal manner. Despite your abrasive personality you were a very helpful individual.

Could somebody please tell Marn why Mista is standing there under a Blue Umbrella and rain not falling???

I am surprised you do not know. He is shading himself from the hot sun. Have you never seen people with umbrellas when they are walking in the hot sun?
Right here in Toronto I have seen some people using their umbrella when the sun is hot; the weather is sometimes humid in summer.
When it is hot, it is hot. It keeps the heat out of, on top of their heads. It appears come rain or shine we do need that umbrella for shelter from the rain falling on our heads and the sun from heating them.  :

Sorry to know of his passing. He must have been badly injured and in much pain.

My heartfelt sympathy to his family. It is no easy matter to lose a loved one especially suddenly. May you experience the solace of God’s presence strengthening and sustaining you through your grief.
God is Love, Compassionate, Merciful and Forgiving.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul rest in peace. Amen!

Instead of fighting with Danny Lugay in court, delaying the Lindo Park Enhancement Project and worrying about the “Lyrical Content of Local Calypsos,” why hasn’t the Dominica State College collaborated with the Traffic Department and design a new set of test questions for new drivers?

Why hasn’t the Dominica State College began teaching driver safety courses and devise local public service awareness campaigns to help mitigate this issue? This is where the college can be insightful, pragmatic and creative.

However, “Rum Shop Politics” and “Sing for your Supper Politics” continue to cloud the judgment of local bosses on the island. Where is DBS Radio and Q95 and Marpin on this issue?

Where are the Civil Engineers in the Ministry of Communication and Works? Are they awaiting the death toll to climb once more, before a study is done and recommendations are made. Sometimes you have to help drivers change their behavior by enhancing road design.

Yours is a reasonable suggestion. The time to do so is now. It is my feeling, this may be easier said than done.
How about the Traffic Department emphasizing safety road regulations to nationals through the D/ca Media?
This department should provide courses for especially young drivers and also a course in upgrading driver skills for seasoned drivers.
I wonder if the Dominica State College will decide to institute driver safety courses be it in collaboration with the Traffic Dept. It would be worth an inquiry.
Whoever initiates it and tries to implement it, I believe the PM will have to be consulted and provide his final approval.
If DSC implements driver courses, I expect it will be at a cost.

So My Government says its not politics. Well maybe its just ‘petty politics’.
It would seem that My Government is determined to make Mr. Lugay a national hero. When he was barred from the House of Parliament, his popularity skyrocketed. His constituency and a large cross section of Dominica sympathized and rallied behind him. Because generally Dominicans do not like unfairness even when they share the same camp with you. In fact its very likely that not for that episode Mr, Timothy might have won the Goodwill Constituency. Now here we go again. Some people feel that this might allow Mr. Lugay to shine too much among the Goodwill youth. So they have put a stoppage to the project affecting hundreds of youths. Now the funds have already been secured to do this project. The Government may now come and raise their own funds and do something better. But this is wrong. What ever funds the Government can raise for a similar project should be implemented in another community.

Sad news indeed. There is so much that can be done to mitigate these injuries and better deal with emergencies. Undoubtedly drivers habits or error played a key role. Over and over again, the severity of incidents are made so much worse by habits which are not encouraged with better legislation. How much did not wearing seat belts play a role in the severity of the accidents? Not just this one but countless others? Same happens with other injuries from lack of safety helmet enforcement. We are too lax in some areas of safety. Sometimes we do need government to step to help create a safer society.. This is one such example. Neighboring OECS countries such as St. Lucia and Grenada have wised up long time. Just as we dare not be without insurance. Lets do the right thing. Buckle up, in the event the unforeseeable happens. It’s the least we can do. And it does not cost extra. We as a society need to do better.

Don’t say the word safety and Dominica in the same sentence. Also don’t talk about enforcing laws in Dominica. The only laws they enforce are the obvious ones related to shoplifting, assaults, murder and the like. The authorities turn a blind eye to most other laws.

How would seat belts have helped that Bus Driver?

      • Hawke
        April 30, 2015

By retaining him in his seat and probably prevent him from ‘flying’ into the windscreen. This is not rocket science, Einstein.

      • The Facts
        April 30, 2015

In many cases, seat belts do prevent major injuries and also death. It all depends on vehicle impact and the extent of the injuries. For one, should an accident occur, drivers and passengers would not be thrown out of their vehicles. This is why the emphasis is on wearing seat belts and also helmets where applicable.
It may be different for passengers in buses.
Residing in Ontario, I never enter a vehicle without fastening the seat belts. Furthermore, it is the Law, to fasten seat belts. If drivers, as well as passengers fail to buckle up and are caught by the patrol police officers, they will be heavily fined. This is a standard fine.
