The police are investigating an accident which took place in the Jimmit area involving a motor cyclist and a bus on Monday.

Initial reports indicate that the driver of the bus has sustained major injuries.

Both the bus and the bike were extensively damaged.

An eyewitness told DNO that the driver of the bike has been residing in either Guadeloupe or France and is not familiar with the Dominican road codes.

According to the eyewitness the bike was driving on the right side of the road into incoming traffic when the accident occurred.

A passenger on the bus was also injured, the eyewitness said.

DNO will follow this story and publish updates when they become available.

i think all dats is because of our development issues we are facing in dominica. skerrit will waste how much millions of dollars on shit n pocketing all chavez dem money but cant make proper road sighs n stop lights. antigua is soo much smaller dan DA n stop sighs are placed on all roads. somebody tell me wen last u heard of a vehicle accident in antigua. skerrit do ur job n put some stop sighs do something im a youth n i am fed up of this undeveloped place. stupes.

Firstly, I wish all involved a speedy recovery. Secondly, how many more injuries and deaths before more safety regulations are put in place. For starters: No overtaking in specific areas, traffic signals, road signs, speed limits, lighting in vulnerable areas. These things are not difficult. The government/police need to enforce some laws. Praying without taking action is not going to save our society. God wants us to take action, it’s only then he will assist.

No matter how much sighs and warnings department of transportations put in any country in the world, there are going to be accidents, and law breakers. PERIOD! There are many reasons like, ignorance, showing off, drinking and driving, drugs, – prescribed or illegal, weather conditions, road conditions, the vehicle conditions, no respect to other drives, no respect to people crossing the streets, and last but not least, texting and driving.

I’m seeing a lot of comments speaking about street signs. I will totally agree that there are a lot of areas in DA that needs street signs, but I’m not exactly sure what street sigh could have prevented this accident.
Someone mentioned that there wasn’t enough concern show in the article about the bike rider. My concern is whether or not he has a valid driver’s license in Dominica and if he has insurance as well.
It has been my experience, first hand unfortunately, that these guys usually don’t have either.

Hopefully everyone involved in this incident will be fine in a day or tow.

wow,not knowing dominicas road code ,that’s so sad, based on the number of biking and fatal car truck incidents,we have been experiencing,i suggest to the traffic division of the police force, that they seek funding toward, setting up highway bikes and cars road patrols, the writing is on the wall, time to step up,one more level.

      September 24, 2013

what DA needs is more road/traffic signs. you r driving into town theres no sign telling you how many miles per hour is permitted. so people drive at their own pace. so many times i see foreigners driving places where they r not supposed to be cause of the lack of signs or directions. up to last week i saw a blue crv driving on the EC Loblack bridge heading out of town. yes we know this bridge is only to enter into town but the foreigners dont and theres no sign.

France/Guadeloupe or where-ever – the person is hurt, people were hurt and we all should be concerned. I’m a bike rider and we riders are not considered road worthy. With all the money Skerritt getting for road reconstruction, why isn’t he considering a pathway for cyclists? “80 % of accidents are caused by bikes.” Caused by bikes? or involves bikes.”

Just in case you didn’t get it, bikes are motor bikes in that case, not bicycles. Now, a pathway for motor bikes? Get real. Why not try staying on your side of the road, stop speeding or overtaking, stop riding drunk. For example, motorbike overtaking on right in front of someone turning right with their signal on? Young guys losing control while they go on a motorbike joy ride? Drunk man riding down federation drive smashing into a car? May I suggest you do some research on the other accidents. It may just help you not sound ignorant.

      September 24, 2013

There you go again. People are involved in an accident. People are hurt. Someone or both of the drivers could be at fault. Instead of you calling on all of us to be careful when we drive, you found it necessary to add a political spin on something so serious that does not involve politics.

I hope all the parties involved that their injuries are not life threatening and can have a speedy recovery. Everything is not and should not be politics. We need to take responsibility for our own actions.

      September 24, 2013

Sir please excuse me but I have traveled to many metropolian countries and I have never seen nor heard of any pathway for any motor cyclist. Most cyslists as I have been seeing take chances especially when overtaking and because they go faster that the four(4)wheeled vehicle they believe they can make it before meeting the incoming vehicle on the other end,and that’s why the collision takes place. But my heart goes out to the driver of that motor cycle, and hope that he makes it because I see this to be a very serious accident ,fortunately there was not a pinion rider or else this would be a catastrophy.Motor cycle riders should just be a little more careful when taking chances on the roads.

From BICICLES to BIG RIGS – we drive everything INTERNATIONALLY – WITHOUT DIFFICULTY
Furthermore thousands of tourists drive on Dominica’s roads DAILY – WITHOUT DIFFICULTY

This rider is not blind he saw how traffic was flowing on a mile of long flat road – he took a show off chance AND IT FAILED

This is a silly comment. Even Dominicans who have been living abroad (mostly mainland USA) for extensive periods of time tend to drive on the right when they visit home. Your comment means car rental companies will go out of business.

How heartless! Have you ever accidentally done the opposite of what you’re supposed to do ? I wonder why. Maybe you’re the only one entitled to faults. No one save for the biker really knows the (his) circumstances leading up to the accident. Wow … one would think some of us have no love ones. The way we treat people involved in unfortunate events even before we know the cause.

Recently, in Toronto there have been a few motorbike accidents. All ended in deaths of the drivers. One of them had a passenger-friend who also died.
I am unable to comprehend why they do not speed less and drive safely. They must also look out for oncoming traffic and those that are turning. There are too many injuries and too many lives lost due to traffic accidents.

“Rider” of the bike, not “driver”. With many N. American and Europeans (incl. visitors from Guadeloupe & Martinique) visiting us I would recommend we put aup a few reminders to foreign motorists that in Dominica we drive/ride on the left, in strategic places such as : Melville Hall airport, Pont Casse, the bridgfes in Roseau, round-about at Fort Young and major junctions.
I hope the injured recover and that the party, found to be at fault had insurance cover.

  41. "O" STRESS"
    September 23, 2013

Hope no one got killed by the looks of it, it appears there was a direct impact. If it turns out that the biker was not familiar with the use of our roads that calls for more educating of drivers as to the proper use of our roads, more visible signs and signals are needed. The busiest season as it relates to our road usage during our W.C.M F and independence celebrations. Wish all a speedy recovery.
