Police have confirmed that one man was struck by a vehicle in St. Joseph yesterday.
Police Public Relations Officer, Inspector Claude Weekes, said that the individual was struck by a Suzuki Jeep on the St. Joseph highway.
According to Weekes, the adult male sustained multiple injuries to his head, legs, knee, and chest. The inspector confirmed that the vehicle which stuck the individual was driven by a Colihaut woman.
One eye witness told Dominica News Online that the victim was attempting to cross on the pedestrian crossing near the St. Joseph school when the vehicle struck him on his right side and knocked him down.
The eye witness said the victim appeared to be unconscious for a moment. He was taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital.
Police have not confirmed the man’s condition.
More details will be provided in a subsequent news report.
Someone questioned the location of the pedestrian cross walk in that area. I trust that the traffic division will examine the area thoroughly to help determine what can be done to alleviate this issue in the future. I wish a speedy recovery to the accident victim.
Why not put a “walk over” for pedestrians, like other countries do. Then people will not have to be crossing the highway. It would be much safer for people.
And I dont think that there are any signs indicating to drivers that there’s a pedestrian crossing ahead. from my stand point, there should be a large road sign indicating where pedestian crossings are on the main roads.
The location of this pedestrian crossing has always been of great concern to me, particularly whe vehecles are traveling from north. It’s basically at a blind sport, and by the time it appears to the driver, it would take much effort to come to a complete stop, so that has to be looked at.
though the pedestrians have the right of way on the crossings, some of us take our time and walk like there’s no intention to get from one side to the next, just keEeSp in mindS, wrong or right who suffers the most when hit by a car, the driver or the pedestrian…? DRIVERS, STAY ALERT!
I wish him a speedy recovery. D rivers please show respect for all traffic signs especially pedestrian crossing signs. Traffic department please make sure such signs are clearly posted.
i hope he is o.k. i wish him a speedy recovery,my prayers and thoughts go out to his famly. people please drive carefully. let us take care of each other.
I am sorry to hear that and hope that this getle man would be ok and to the family be strong and to all drivers on the road take it easy and drive for your self and all other road users.
