The Parkinson Memorial Secondary School in Barbados has made a contribution towards Dominica’s rebuilding efforts post Tropical Storm Erika.

Representatives of the school earlier this week presented a cheque of EC$1,085 and some text books for both primary and secondary schools to Acting Minister for Education, Kelvar Darroux.

The funds were collected from donations as well as a fund raising concert, dubbed “To Dominica with love” that the educational institution undertook.

“I just want to first give God thanks for making this possible because without him this would not have been possible and I would also like to mention my principal. From the moment that he heard what had befell Dominica, he felt that we had to do something and we had to do it urgently. As a result, students, staff, parents and we had a fundraising concert,” Dominican-born teacher at Parkinson Memorial Secondary School, Sharie Thomas Messiah, said.

She informed that artists such as Red Plastic Bag and others took part in the concert and their services were given at no cost and thanked all who made the event possible.

“I trust that this donation would go a long way in helping to make the current situation a much better situation,” She added.

Acting Minister for Education, Kelvar Darroux, said the Ministry of Education was grateful for the gesture.

“We are very much aware that after 12 weeks post Tropical Storm Erika, the Ministry of Education still faces some challenges and we welcome any such donation that we can get to aid and alleviate the plight of students and teachers most affected by the storm,” he noted.

“It is times like these that we realize how important it is as a country that we can have our brothers and sisters in the Caribbean, that we can rely on (them to) provide a shoulder that we can lean on.”

He promised that the donation will be put to good use.

Can the Prime Minister explain to Dominicans, why is it when ever he goes on his so called trips, he always appoints a Minister of Government to act on his behalf. Hon Regie Austrie , Minister of Housing has been sick for approximately one month, an important Ministry like Housing, especially post Erica is without an acting Housing Minister. Are Dominicans to believe, whereas the Ministry of Education can have an acting Minister, the Housing Ministry is hiding something Dominicans must not know. I am told Hon Austrie is also responsible for ALBA, it is alleged, the ALBA debt is approximately $300,000. Please DNO, I am not tryng to imply anything, I just need an explanation from the Government.
