Miss Teen Dominica expresses concern about disappearance of Shanice Jermott

Shanice (left) has been missing for 11 days now; Miss Teen Dominica Nicole Rodriquez

I am indeed pleased to have been crowned Miss Teen Dominica as part of the 2011 Carnival Season.

I see this as more than just a mere opportunity to represent myself and my school but as a platform to echo the sentiments and speak to the issues affecting the youth of the Nature Island, Dominica. It is in this regard that I would like to lend my voice to a situation which is dear to my heart and dear to the hearts of my fellow students, teachers and principal of the Isaiah Thomas Secondary School.

We are all deeply worried and concerned about the disappearance of Shanice Jemmott. We would like to call on the relevant authorities for a collaborative approach for the search and rescue of this young lady.

The situation has touched us immensely at our learning institution and I would like to rally the entire Dominican populace to join in the effort. The situation isn’t merely one for the family, friends and community of Shanice but it is reflective of a situation which could befall any young person.

Every minute counts and we would like to urge everyone to assist in any way possible and to make any information that they may have available to the Police and/or relevant authority or family. A young girl’s life is in the balance and a collaborative, well coordinated approach is needed at this time.

I would also like to urge the population to continue to pray for her safe return and comfort the family in their moment of distress.

Once again, I would like to thank the organizers of the Miss Teen Dominica Pageant, the Waitukubuli Dance Theatre Company, my sponsors LIME Dominica Ltd., my chaperones and my school for this wonderful opportunity to be an ambassador for the youth of Dominica.

How many Dominicans now have American passports? Because her last name is Rodriquez and her hair long and straight, she is less of a Dominican than someone holding another passport right?

its A shame its Only Non Nationals run things in DOMINICA. The Prime Minister Is illegal he is a non Dominican so lets see where this place is heading. I can remember a DOMINICAN had a Daughter born in a neighboring Island and she was crowned Carnival queen there and after the show the Minister of Culture took the crown until she could prove she was born in the said island. If its a fact that she is not born in Dominica the Next in line contestant can sue the organization for their negligence and plauurism. Dominicans is so backward???? and Dominica’s daughters is so ugly?????Come on Raymund Lawrence and others what are you people doing to Dominica??? Is Dominica the latest Whore on the market???? OH MY GOD …………………..I want to hear from Marcella laroque and Shannon Vigilante , Sandra Brown and others….Come one Dominica, where are these people taking us. I guess its one sure sign of the drug cartels, human trafficking and the venezuelian connections is taking over Dominica. I pray we do not have to do like Libya sometime.

Dominicans by majority have an innate tendency to embrace and defend a foreigner whilst they find no problem in bashing their own. Sir Arthur Lewis of St. Lucia diagnosed this malaise as Self Contempt. To Dominican “charity begins outside the home”. To prove this point just see how Dominicans are going to respond to my comment. A foreigner don’t have to defend themselves here there are too many eager natives willing to do JUST that. Sadly it is a legacy of slavery that is predominant in Dominica.

Whilst one don’t have to be born in Dominica to represent the country, it is internationally recognized in all civlised countries that to represent a country you have to be at least a NATIONAL. So the the question how can a NON-DOMINICAN be a Miss DOMINICA is perfectly logical.
I have asked many of my Caribbean colleagues their impressions of this paradox, and they all reply that only in servile Dominica this parody will be tolerated.

Incidentally for all those emotional ones, Haitians due to their darker complexions and poverty are treated as less than humans in beloved Santo Domingo. Go figure.

You must fist establish yourself as a nation, before delving into the obscure world of cultural diversity. The same Dominicans who are yet to embrace the indigenous Caribs or even Marigotians for that matter(calling them monkeys). Find no problem into importing, embracing and defending other nationalities whilst castigating and cursing what is closer to home. If you can’t love what is home grown then it is purely hypocritical to pretend to love imports.

Nothing personal with the young lady who was coincidentally backed by the biggest corporate sponsor, thus could pay for the most expensive evening wear, spectacular wear and the best chaperones money could buy. She must be made to feel welcome in dominica by ‘all means’. However not at the limitation of the people who built this nature isle.

It is just that One has to do things right, national representatives should be nationals period!

Unlike most of you on here, I attended the show. Miss Rodriguez deserved the crown. Unless things have changed Teenage Pagent is about show casing one’s talent, it ‘s about poise/grace while representing the school of attendance. Nicole did all of this. She displayed real talent, unlike some of the other contestant who tried to act or tried to sing (this is by no means meant to minimize their efforts). She performed her dance routine to different songs one of which was a soca. Isn’t soca part of our culture? Give the young girl a break her confidence was remarkable, considering that English is not her Mother tongue. She has raised the bar for Teenage Pageant and as far as I’m concerned that’s a positive for all.

I really wish the energy put in Bashing this young lady was put in finding the missing girl ………..Please note that the news it world wide and not just in the hills of you beautiful island………just go to prove the reason why we as a race is so BACKWARD as we protray the style of CRABS IN A BUCKET

    March 1, 2011

TO Miss Teen Dominica congrats on your victory. And even though it has been said many times and in different ways maybe Shanice will see that, she is care for, loved, and missed, by a whole different group of people. And hearing it or reading it, and knowing who it is coming from will maybe give her that strenght and courage that she needs. That another young person like her is speaking. So to all those that are putting the young people down take a step back and think of what u are saying. Think of what this girl might be feeling and thinking. If she had never spoke about this situation YOU same ones will still be bad mouthing the girl. BE HAPPY FOR THE YOUNG PEOPLE.

      March 1, 2011

and even if she didn’t write it, your point is? i’m sure she had a hand to play in it because its in her name. Presidents, Prime Ministers and world leaders have speech writers so why can’t our Miss Teen. It is the thought that counts, she went besides herself and thought of her schoolmate and used her new position to make a clarion call to all the other Dominicans.

continue the good work under the guidance of your teachers and principal and all the others who assist you before, during and after your reign…

Why is a non national being crowned Miss Teen Dominica ? Hey just asking and roy I am right on board with you on that, when we live overseas we have to go through so much crap in order to be embraced and we just giving ours away just like that criteria for entrance should be born dominican or of dominican parentage sorry but I don’t see any of my young Dominican females going to Santo Domingo and being crowned Miss Santo Domingo Do you ?…I am disappointed

    • Wonder
      March 1, 2011

You should give the young lady a break why one of our own did not go, she made everyone proud, give jack his jacket and jacqueline her lip stick. This young lady deserved the crown. We as a people never put ourselves forward and when someone else does, we tend to critisize thats not right.

All those talking about her culture is break dancing part of our culture, no africans did not use to break dance, we see it on BET and we adopt it and people perform these routings in everything. So my word to you all stop trying to bring down people and appreciate.

Nothing is never good for you Dominicans, that is why you all keep going in circles.

Miss Rodriquez put a death ear to those negative comments and rise above all. Once again congratulation to you and keep your heads up.

And this young lady who is missing it is very sad to see that she has disappeared in thin air, God is watching over you all especially her family, who i know personally. i strongly believe that a message should be learnt from this.

Young ladies who are being abused, please speak out do not be ashame, their is hope for you all and someone positive is here to listen. Note i said positive, because to many of times we speak to the wrong set of people, persons who cannot do anything to solve the solution.

And to DNO, please edit these useless, unnecessary comments properly. i think you all should raise the standards of things being said.

Admin: We give everyone the opportunity to express themselves. Just because you are not in agreement with someone’s opinion, it is useless or unnecessary. Everyone has a right to their own opinion.

oh my GOd so many dislikes. wow.

what i’m trying to say is that she is not saying anything new . she is not saying anything that everyone one has already said. so seeing that she is a sort of a public personality right now why not say something with a little more substance. why not talk about the fact that the young girl was abused as said by her grandmother. why the police autorities aren’t givng any information on the person whom the grandma suspected to be involved in the dissapearance. this is a 14 year old girl and the only way for her to be abducted without a trace while going to or for school by a stranger would be if she was taken at gunpoint.

So what are we saying about the new trend now where a large percentage of our pregnant women when they are about 8-9 months run to the US to make their children and come back? In the next 10-20 yeras more than half of our children will have been born overseas. Will we say that they are al non-Dominicans then?

I say it’s time we stop the foolishness now, starting with this rubbish about Skerrit not being a Dominican!! Let’s change all those stupid laws and backward mentality!!!

I suspect that Ms Rodrigez might just be the one to help us to begin to get out of this stupid, backward way of thinking that many of us seem to be engulfed in!!!

      Congratulations, Ms. Rodriguez.

Haters/complainers/negative people: The young lady is Dominican by naturalization. There is no law that bars her from participating in the Miss Teen pageant. So, those who are making an issue of where she was born, give the lady a break. Go get a life! She is Dominican whether you like it or not.

Just for the record, Vibes: No one has said that Mr. Skerrit is not a Dominican. The issue is whether he violated the Constitution when he contested the general elections.

Finally we in the Commonwealth of Dominica are beginning to appreciate diversity at the National Youth Level.

Here is a young lady that is a Dominican but from the other Dominica that speaks Spanish and we have embraced her as one of our own. This is truly remarkable and tells a lot about our cultural and societal tolerance as an enlightened people and in particular about our school administrators.

This simple act sends a strong signal to all Caribbean Governments that we as ordinary Dominicans and institutions are ready to embrace the one Caribbean phenomenon of CSME and later political union.

DNO, the accomplishment of this young lady through our local Youth Pageant must be posted on your entire sister online news sites for the world to read.

Today I feel proud to be a Dominican – for I can boast with a sense of pride that we are not just friendly but we are tolerant and we embrace diversity within our society and cultural activities.

Carnival is an education and I am happy to see the many schools that participate in carnival and allow their entire student body to learn some lifelong lessons .
