Missing: Shanice Jemmot

Shanice Jemmot

Shanice Alana Jemmot, a 14-year-old third form student of the Isaiah Thomas Secondary School, is being reported missing by her grandmother.

Dorris Paul said Shanice, who lives with her at Clark Hall, Layou, did not come home from school yesterday and family members are very worried.

“Yesterday morning she left home for school and when her brother returned he claimed that he did not see his sister,” a distraught Paul said. “We were expecting that after she would reach home but we haven’t seen her. We looked everywhere for her. Her friends said they did not see her at school. We don’t know what to do.”

The police and welfare departments were informed about the situation.

“We made a report at the Mahaut Police Station and also Roseau,” the grandmother stated. “Up to now we haven’t seen the child. We don’t know where the child is. Shanice is not a bad child. She is a loving child. Every child has their ways and she can sometimes be a little rude but she is a good person.”

If anyone knows the whereabouts of Shanice Jemmot they should contact the Welfare Division at 266-3080/266-3020 or the nearest police station.

During the past time that shanice jemmot has been missing everybody has been sending their sympathy to the family and school as well as blaming the family and school. People are saying all kinds of things but no one is asking themselves the real important questions. Where do you think shanice is? Who could have taken her? Where could they have taken her? How did such a thing happen? Is there anyone suspicious looking?

And the last and most important question:
WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO DO SUCH A THING? SUCH A HORRIBLE AND SAD THING.
TAKING A YOUNG GIRL AWAY FROM HER HOME AND FAMILY. THIS IS NOT RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!

To the young people out there be vigilant, be careful ,there are alot of sick people out there.

We don’t know what to expect but we can’t give up. HELP TO FIND SHANICE JEMMOT!!!!!!!!
BE ALERT, PRAY HARD AND ASK COULD TO DELIVER HER BACK TO HER FAMILY.

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!GOD BLESS!!!!!!!!!!!!

sorry about my error, I meant to say that the teacher should immediately call the parent to inform them that the child is not at school, and if there is any reason why she is not present.

oh stop with that.. so many children stay home two days from school with no call.. until when they get back to school with a note from parents. the girl didnt come school one day how in earth the teacher suppose to know something wrong.. like it or not the child was just another ordinary student.. and DON’T BE TOO QUICK TO BLAME THE SCHOOL.. OR TEACHERS.. we are all humans

I too, am praying that Shanice is found safe and unharmed. But when I think of these things happening, I place no immediate blame on any one person. First of all The school, if not should have a system in place where they have contact numbers for all children, not the children, but the parents/guardians, so if a child is not present when the attendance is called, then the teacher should immediately call the parent/guardian is not at school. If the system is in place then all well and good. But the child was only found missing when she did not come home after school. The parents canot be blamed in this case, since the child dressed in school uniform and her parent/guardian saw her leave for school, the parent cannot know that she did not attend schhol if no one called her. Think about that. But nonetheless, I do pray that Shanice is found or returned safely to her family.

I hope she is found very soon.

I live in the UK. Parents receive a call from the teacher if the parent has not reported the child absent that day. Schools are a lot bigger here, It can be done.

GOD, I pray that this little girl is found safe and sound. We as parents have to take responsibility for our children. When they are that young we need to talk to them constantly about the ills that are out there. We have to have our children, both boys and girls on the same level and talk to them about how to take care of themselves both at home at outside.

We pray that you are found as soon as possible and may the good Lord be with you.

What is the u[date on this case. I remember back in the 80’s when there was ban on military atire. The police was going from door to door and even searching for these atire. When a minor is missing, why can’t there be the same effort be placed in a human life. Everyone needs to get involved in finding this child. This could happen to any of your family memebers.

I have been reading all these comments and have to add my views:

    1. This is really sad, I have known shanice since she was a little girl and I also know her family well, My entire family and I are praying that she is well and will be found soon
    2. There is no need to blame teachers or parents but apparently a change is necessary. Parents need to be more interested in the welfare of there child, so that teachers can work together with the parents in forming these young lives
    3. I know for a fact that it is common for children to duck class or come/leave during breaktime, it is also common for students to not come in school for a number of days and there wouldn’t even be a letter of notice from the parents because they really don’t care about there childs education, so we cannot expect teachers to run behind each of those students and their parents.

    4. On the other hand, although Dominica is a country which had luckily been spared from frequent tragedies, we need to stop sleeping. A system has to be put in place where it’s not that easy for students to just be roaming all over the place and no one cares.

I know shanice comes from a loving family and is not one of those kids that would usually just go missing, so I am praying that she is ok wherever she is. This is really sad :-(

This was suppose to a response, But I think I will post it here again:

This is a very good point. It is not about being political, It’s about Ideas which could later save the lives of our children. Politics is not about just liking a party, it is about asking our representatives to represent us in ways that would benefit us. But many are too colorblind to see that.

I agree with people asking for laws to be implemented in school that when a child is absent the parent gets a call. It’s never too late to learn and it takes situation like this to open our eyes. People in Dominica are so uptight about their politicians that they get offended whenever you mention “politicians”. we have to hold our politicians responsible because they are the ones whom we put in place to help make better laws. OR did you just put them there because you like them, I doubt very much.

So yes, let us ask our education representatives to look at ways where we can know of students missing at an earlier time. What’s wrong with that. After all, we want to move with the times, how about in actual ways which are beneficial. So yes, I am all for politicians who actually have use. Often times laws are changed based on an unfortunate incident which took place since many lack the foresight to do so otherwise. In some way, Dominicans want to move with the times, in other ways they wish to remain antiquated. It is indeed time to vote wisely, and ask questions of our politicians. Do they have the wisdom to implement laws, or they only good at throwing words.

that is y the teachers must be together and alway be present and on time for work , to take class attendance ,teachers must also love the students so when a child have a problem they can go to them.

Nearly 2000 years ago Jesus met SATAN and ask what do you have there satan. He replied a world of sinners. liars, aduterers, murders perverted people. Jesus asked what are you going to do with them satan. Satan smiled and said I’m gonna play with them I’m gonna tease them and I’m gonna kill everyone of them. Jesus’ heart was touched with compasion and asked what will it take to deliver them. Satan replied it’s gonna take your life the breath that your breath and so jesus died on the cross for us to save us from our sins. The bible declares in John 3 v 16, that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. To Jemma’s kidnapper if she’s been kidnapped you know in your heart that you have sinned I’m pleading with you today that God intends to keep that promise no matter what we have done. He will wash away our sins and make us whole again. Do not allow satan to allow you to be his servant, he’s only gonna kill you and make you unhappy. If you or Jemma is reading this and all the people who are out there reading this please pray this prayer with me. Yeah thou Shanice Jemmont and her kidnapper walks in the valley of the shadow of death Shanice Jemmont and her kidnapper will fear no evil LORD. Your rod and your staff will comfort Shanice Jemmont and her kidnapper all the days of their live and they shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Please now is the time to accept Christ as your saviour bring Shanice Jemmont home safe to her family I’m pleading to you with tears in my ears. It’s not my child it’s not my family but God only knows the pain you are causing these folks. Have a heart we will continue to pray for you all and please do the right thing. Take Shanice back to her family. Shanice if you have left voluterily please call your family let them know you are ok. We all feel like running away sometimes but there is no place like home. God loves you all, I love you and the entire Domincan population loves you all. Please do the right thing come back home.

It’s no use comparing the system in Dominica to other countries.Esp in countries where a missing 14 yr old wouldn’t even make the local news.Dominican society is different and people are lucky to be able to take a much more relaxed approach. This is an unusual situation and if necessary people will make changes to how things operate. Things are changing and I expect the situation isn’t helped by fugitives from other countries taking up residence in Dominica.
I pray that she’s safe and would be quite surprised if she wasn’t-even with my knowledge of :-? what goes on in the wider world.

By just reading u all’s comments got me thinking! In dominica so many crimes happen but yet still little is done! To the parents of this young child I would like for u to have faith in the Lord
! We @ dis moment r all blind! We know nothinbg unless someone comes forward n speak or domething! N to the ones having da lil chat bout teachers calling parents yes u have a point dre but u have to understand dat children miss school all da time for silly reasons! Even if da teachetrs do call da parents wat difference would it make really? Sometimes parents send their kids to school n they themselves end up somewhere else! Wat I am tryin to say is dat yes da teachers should be worried but its not their duty to call everytime a child is missing from school! Anyways I don’t have abny kids but I do have lil sisters! N it would break my heart to see something like dat happebn to her! Well anyways I am so sorry to da family for wat they r goin through right now! I wil remember her in my prayers n I’m keeping my fingers crossed so that she would be found n returned safe home!blessings to u all!

people plzzzz stop dis nonsense of blaming the school……i mean come on be realistic reasonable and respond wit some type of professionality in ur thinkin….put ur self in a teacher’s shoe. there are over 400 students attending the school if perhaps 25 students or maybe even 50 miss a school a certain day….do you think that the principal has to call over 30 homes….i mean come on where are ur brains. everytime some situation like this pops up, some Dominicans which i ashamed to say always have to think negative and blame, criticize and be negative towards the situation. Some parents do not even care about there children’s education….they do not even have d courtesy of attending PTA”s in the school or even come for report book ….but as soon a problem arises we go right ahead and blame the teachers…..this is how u seperate wise men from foolish men/women. i am a current student of the ISAIAH THOMAS SECONDARY SCHOOL and i am tired of ppl constantly spitting out negative criticism towards the school…..Shanice is my friend we did athletics together and i hope she returns home safely….i pray for her safe returns and her families

      February 21, 2011

      Concerned

Let me reassure you that in the UK if a child misses ONE day of school NO teacher is going to phone the parents. It is the parents duty to send a letter to the school advising why the child was not present. Action is only taken when that child is constantly absent from school.

Yes there are cases when the school will check on a certain child on a daily basis, but that only happens when the child is seen as a problem/vulnerable or at risk, and then the school/parents/truancy officers and social services all work together.

Stop the blame game, and be optimistic that Shanice will soon return home safely.

    • my pressure up...
      February 20, 2011

In most schools when u register u’re asked for a contact number for the parents and for someone to call in case of an emergency and the parents cannot be reached. I just believe there should be a system when child don’t report to school and parents don’t call to say that the child isn’t comin today that the school calls.

I agree with the person, who said, the teacher should call the grandmother, when he/she did not see the child at school. Is the teacher duty to do so.That’s how they do it here. They must call the parents.
Am praying that , they will find her safe, and everything will be alright.God is in control.Lets think positive. The devil is defeated. Am from Layou.

I must say that I agreed with you on some of what you say but not all…… It is indeed the parents duty to inform the school or teacher{s} when there child is unable to attend school ….. its a form of respect…. so therefore if one day the parent don’t call a teacher can say well they are accustomed to calling so they can call to find out what went wrong..

To the entire Paul family I must say my heart goes out to you all……

That is true but it is very time consuming in the more populated schools where so many children are late. Are we going to get parents unnecessarily alarmed when their children may have been caught in traffic or strolled to school or waited for a friend? Think of the distress this can also place on parents and even teachers! A teacher is not superman! We have to take the roll call, conduct class assembly or supervise during general assembly, report to class, do lesson plans, grade books, tests, assignments etc…, manage classes, substitute during a non- teaching period for absent teachers, do break time supervision, attend to sick students, supervise detentions, see parents, and the list goes on… A teacher is so many persons in one! Let’s be realistic. Those blaming teachers are quick to point fingers yet still they are the ones who are scared to enter the profession because of the amount of dedication and responsibility!

    • TEACHER
      February 19, 2011

I don’t agree with this comment. I have been a teacher for almost ten years. Is it practical to call a home when a teacher notices a student is absent? This is easier said than done! A class teacher may take attendance and record a student as absent if he/she takes the attendance and the child is absent at that time. Some students do come in quite late after the attendance is taken. By then the teacher is off to other classes and hardly finds out whether the student is absent or late til the next day. Besides that fact, teacher normally wait a few days to see if the student returns after being supposedly ill or what have u. If that child is missing at school for a few days, the teacher may call the students’ home to shed some light on what’s going on? … Let;s not try to play blame games. THis is NOT the time or place. Let us instead pray and give the family strength as others are so rightfully doing!

      • can be done
        February 20, 2011

Well something is wrong and something better has to be put in place to be able to keep track of a child if late or absent; because in the states there are over 1000 children some times and if a child is absent there is a system put in place to call the parent at the end to the day; so please it is not to late to start something like that; find out, how can it be done instead of just saying it is impossible.

SO if a child does not turn up at school, if the parent did not call to say that my child will be absent today, the teachers do not alert the principal or the parent that the child is not at school for the day?
The brother should not have been the one reporting after school that he didnt see the sister at school, because it is likely that they are in different classes, and did not see her at breaktime. The time between 8am and 1p.m. is a huge difference! I believe that the grandparent should have been notified promptly, so as to find out whether the child is sick or not!!! And then action could have been taken

Well that’s how it is in most countries. If underage kids don’t turn up they call the parents. What does a head count in a class take? Everyone has a cell these days. Easy

        • for real
          February 19, 2011

the parents are supposed to notify the school in writing if the child is late or if the child is absent, but most parents do not take the time to do that. it is until the next day they might send someone or the child will tell you, ‘i was sick yesterday’.dont blame the school. where did this child go? she is 14, not 5.there is something we all dont know about wats happening.

        February 18, 2011

Thought that was the purpose of Roll Call?

      • smh
        February 18, 2011

I don’t think “excited” is saying that teachers should call every child who doesn’t show up but the schools need to take more responsibility. It’s not the teacher who has to call. The secretary can do so or it can even be an automated message where the info is inputed and the message goes out. When my son doesn’t show up for school, I get a call from the school by the end of the first period and it’s an automated message saying that he didn’t show up. So if you get that message and you kno know your child left home for school that morning and your child did not stay home sick then you can take immediate/necessary action.

      • ....
        February 18, 2011

concerned I so agree. it is ridiculous to expect a secondary school to call a child’s parent if the child does not show up. we all went to school. we know when we were sick one day we took a note the next day. teachers never called our home. for those of us who taught we never called every parent to find out why the child was not at school. we expect the parents to send a note or call us sometime in the day or the next day.

I’m not in total agreement with you . I am not in any way joyous that Shanice is missing. I know her and her entire family personally. However, in the US when Parents Teachers Meetings {P.T.A.}ARE HELD YOU ALL MAKE IT YOUR OBLIGATION TO BE THERE. However in Dominica few parents take this interest and they show up, take note majority of the time those you really want to see are the ones who don’t show up. Question to you is : Should we call every parent who don’t show up to the PTA meeting AS SOON AS THE MEETING IS OVER? It just shows our interest in our children.

        • I have children too.
          February 19, 2011

Well the system is just a telephone call and it does not take long to do that; as long as a child has not report to school, the parent should be informed; well we have to start this Now so that we do not get into that same situation again.
This did not just happen yesterday; and the children at school should be told of that incident since yesterday; when my daughter came home, I asked her if she heard about a missing child and she told me No so I just found that this was strange and I came to see if it was on DNO but it was not there either and that was yesternay at 1.
Let us all pray God that this child is safe and this pedifier or whover has her will be caught. We all have children; and parents talk to your children tell them do not take rides from anyone besides their assigned bus or a bus driver they know or even better do not travel by his/her self with only the driver; travel in groups.
I also know we are not in the US or UK but we always talk about copying things from these countries; well her we are we need to copy from them now and get the NO show- Call parent system in schools now.

Please in the US where there are thousands of students in one school it is being done. Why can’t it be done in a school with 400 and 500 students. Please…I know that there are some really hardworking and dedicated teachers who live, breathe and sleep education but there are some “teachers” who do this just to get the meager paycheck. personal I think the latter ones are unsafe for our children.

I agree with your comment. I think the education department or the schools system in Dominica need some law within the education act , where all children of school bearing age needs to be in school ,failing that the parents or their guidance needs to answer why they are not. Also all children registered at a school and fail to show up , the school should get in touch with their parents , why her or she is absent? On the other hand if the child is absent from school any day, it is the parent responsibility to notify the school. The education minister must put laws in place to make our families and school be more responsible in situations like these….

I think you people need a dose of reality here. ITSS is a school with some 700 kids, and anywhere between 50 and 80 absent on a daily basis. Last I heard, a percentage of the staff are absent on a regular basis as well. Really … who makes all of these calls to parents? Who pays for all of these calls? And how much time is left to teach those who have made the effort to actually be at school? For those of you who have run away to some foreign shore in search of greener pastures, this is what you left us kakarats who could not run away, to deal with. We are still the struggling economy who can hardly afford to pay the few teachers a decent salary or even provide enough toilet paper for the washrooms. No gold or oil has been discovered since you left, and no magic has suddenly made us able to afford the luxuries that you enjoy in your new found heavenly paradise. Simple point is, the government is trying its damnedest best to provide an education for our youth with whatever scant resources that we have, and the back-breaking burden falls on us teachers to make something of the little malkassays that whosoever wills sends us. It is a thankless job, with practically no recognition, since the very people who make it, look down upon us when they reach gloryland. Far as I get it, this child was no saint with a history that should have been stemmed at home many years ago. No blame game … just a bit of reality for us to chew on. Blessings.
