A national ecumenical funeral Service for the victims of the vehicular accident at Morne Sion, Choiseul is to be held at the Micoud Playing Field in St. Lucia today Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at 1 pm.
Viewing of the bodies will commence at 11 am at the same venue. The authorities have invited to all St. Lucian who would like to attend in support of the relatives of the deceased.
On the evening of Thursday, November 10 a bus was returning to Labayee from Choiseul, on the southern part of the island, after a funeral. According to reports the bus detoured to the community of Delcer to pay respects to the family of the deceased. They were driving down the Morne Sion Road heading south to Choiseul village when the bus missed a left turn, careened over a cliff and landed straight onto a beach, 120 feet below.
Sixteen people were killed instantly, while one died later in hospital.
The accident plunged the entire country into morning and has been described as a ‘national tragedy.’
St. Lucia’s Minister of National Security and Home Affairs Guy Mayers has described the accident as one of the worst in the country’s history.
