Pole falls on passenger bus

Utility pole lands on a coaster bus near Wesley

Passengers aboard a Nissan civilian bus had to scramble to safety earlier today after a utility pole came crashing down on their vehicle.

Social worker Francis Joseph was on the scene when the incident occurred somewhere along the main road between the North Eastern Funeral Home and the village of Wesley.

“I heard some chain saw cutting and noticed a coaster ahead of me stop and immediately I saw a coconut tree fall across the road onto electrical wires and the impact of that brought down an electrical pole just about 50 feet from the impact,” Joseph said as he related his first hand account of the incident.

“The pole came down and landed on the roof of the coaster. The passengers on board immediately got out and there was a brief electrical spark from the coconut tree hitting the electrical lines,” he recounted.

Fortunately, according to Joseph, the impact of the falling tree and pole did not pose any immediate danger to passengers but the incident did hold up traffic for some time.Pole accident at Wesley 3

A live electric pole falling on the bus presents the added danger of electrocution. Staying inside the bus is much safer than getting off,as the tyres insulate the vehicle from ground. And when dismounting from the bus, the safest way is to jump off with both feet in the air, so that the body does not act as a conductor between the vehicle and earth.

We need trained Arborist in Dominica. The days of just cutting down trees without skill are over. This could have resulted in a major loss of life. Fortunately, everyone was ok.

Infrastructures should not only be placed any where any how and be forgotten,,,these electric posts might be placed directly into the soil many years ago…no one bothers to inspect the rooted parts of these poles,,,the poles should be place into concrete which is normally made of water aggregate and cement….the base should rise up above the limit of the ground or soil level ,there should be a special coating placed on top of the post to prevent it from absorbing water from the rain ,,,none of these precautions were being taken ;hence the result that we can see which endangered people’s lives …luckily the bus structure was solid enough to protect the passengers lives…the same inspection should be taken on pipes ,sewage, bridges etc…hope this accident will wake up the gov’t because they are responsible to protect the population…

Stupes! “The Government should look into this”….
How about the tree-cutter and/or his employer take some responsibility for their careless, thoughtless actions?

A lot of people won’t believe there’s actually a science behind tree cutting. Just take a look at the program “Tree Cutters” on Discovery some time.

It is for this very reason Austrie finds Lennox Linton (soon to be Honarable) ugly. Dominicans expect to see white people in Dominica. Well that part of Dominica did not have mulattoes.

Wesley dont need MULES….that is exactly what a MULATTO is. We are pure breed and of African ethnicity, and we like it that way.

  21. The Facts
    September 25, 2014

The driver and passengers were fortunate that although they were shocked and scared which was hard on their brains and heart, they were not injured. Such a shock could easily give someone a heart attack or brain hemorrhage.
Sorry, I had to smile/laugh that this occurred so close to a Funeral Home. A close call. Too close for comfort. Thank God you are all OK although the shock of this could last for a long time.
Now for the chain saw cutter. I do think there was some lack of professionalism in cutting the tree and so close to the road where vehicles travel. It is my feeling the tree was cut on the wrong side or so I think which is why it fell on the road. Furthermore, the tree should not have been cut down at that time and a warning should have been placed on the road ahead, both ways, to alert drivers and pedestrians of this tree being cut down. This could have posed a disaster and caused injuries and deaths. The government should look into this.

    • Anonymous
      September 26, 2014

Where do you ever see warning sings being posted in Dominica. Safety is not given any kind of priority in Dominica.

Earlier this spring, I cut down a tree that dies over the winter. I used a reciprocating saw to cut it. It must have been about 15 feet tall.

It was leaning slightly toward my neighbour and it was right on the boundary line. I did not want the tree falling onto his property since he had a trailer parked close to the tree.

So I tied the tree to another one in the direction I wanted the tree to fall and I put a lot of tension on the rope. The tree fell exactly where I wanted it t fall. No mystery here. It is just common sense.

      • The Facts
        September 29, 2014

Where do you reside? Are you aware that trees are necessary for the environment?
If you reside in Canada you are not allowed to cut down trees without the approval of the Municipal Government. You must inform this government who will send its investigators to view it and then approve it. If you do so without approval, you will be charged.
In some cases, the City will send a worker to cut down the tree at no cost.
A man once cut a tree and it fell on him. He died. Cutting trees are dangerous. Those who cut trees must be careful. They may need expert advice or a professional who is capable of cutting down trees.
Sometime ago, as read on DNO, a man cut a tree and it fell on his son and killed him.
Consider that the tree fell on electric lines and the bus. Obviously, this may have caused electricity interruption.
Consider that the driver and passengers could have been injured or killed. It is amazing that no one got a heart attack especially those who suffer from heart problems, if they were on the bus, due to the shock of the tree falling on the bus.
Consider that the chain saw cutter now has to pay damage costs to the electrical enterprise and the bus driver who may own the bus.
I am not stating that trees, under certain circumstances should not be occasionally cut down.
Tree-cutting should be taken seriously. When cutting trees near to the road, if no warning was posted, it is time that a Law is enacted for this. This is a lesson and warning for those who cut trees as this man.
