The search by law enforcement for two Portsmouth fishermen, who vanished without a trace, into the wide expanse of the ocean has been called off.

Police PRO, Inspector John Carbon, said the authorities have exhausted all resources in their search for the men and they are feared dead.

“The chances for a recovery were almost impossible, because the police have exhausted all the resources that was available to them and they did not find any of the bodies, or any boat or whatsoever … so this is the reason why it was called off,” he told DNO.

Carbon mentioned that the search cannot go on indefinitely.

“Let’s say one week, one month, one year, it has to be a particular time …. it has to be called off,” he stated.

The Dominica Coast Guard, as well as the Maritime Rescue Coordinating Center of Martinique were heading the search.

Thirty-three-year-old Andy Mitchel and Samuel Mitchel 28, left on a fishing expedition at about 5 am on Saturday 1st February, 2014 and had not been seen or heard off since then.

The men took to the seas on a blue fishing vessel named TAKE IT EASY powered by a 50 horse power engine.

Samuel Mitchel is well known in cricketing circles as a right-hand batsman and wicket keeper. He has represented Dominica in several regional matches.

I hope they were not kidnapped. It is difficult to think that the boat was also not found and not a trace of its contents. Let us hope they are safe somewhere. Lord, put a hand!
Inspector Carbon, due to time and cost, I understand the reason why you called off the search. However, please keep the file open.

Faith! This is a situation which leaves one speechless. Still, faith which is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen tells us to keep expecting the best. So, for that family, we keep faith, as difficult as the situation is.

Jah know, I knew these brothers and what hurts is when such misfortune happens with no closure. I still have a faint hope that they’re alive somewhere. And if that’s not the case, then only God knows why they had to go this way. May their friends and family be strengthened throughout this storm.

Its really sad for the families who lose their loved ones like this. It’s like a wound that stays open, never heals. Be strong and be there for each other.
