Roseau Central MP promises to help fire victims

One of the buildings damaged by the fire on Hillsborough Street

Parliamentary representative for the Roseau central constituency, Joseph Isaac, says government will move in speedily to assist the residents who were affected by a fire which occurred in Roseau on Monday night.

“For the residents who have lost most of what they had in some instances everything, I think it’s a very sad evening but I think what we always have to think of is life … first, so the most important thing is that they have life and since you have life anything is possible, ” Isaac said in a media interview shortly after the fire.

The fire, which ocurred on Hillsborough Street in Roseau, caused significant damage to three wooden dwelling houses leaving three families homeless.

Isaac said the parliamentary representative and the government will provide full support to those who were affected by the fire because they are aware that they lost everything and will deal with the matter urgently.

An official of the Fire and Emergency Services Division told a DNO reporter at the scene of the fire on Monday night that one person was taken to hospital due to “apparent electrocution” as a result of the fire.

According to state-owned DBS Radio, DOWASCO employee Kendell Durand who was in the area when the fire started, explained what he saw.

“While I was on Hillsborough Street doing a few repairs for a good friend, I noticed a little smoke and when I looked in the alley, I saw an orange flame, realizing that the fire is beginning at the back of the building. About 8:28 exactly, that’s when the real thing started and the fire just started growing rapidly.”

Durand also mentioned that someone with a motorbike reported the fire to the fire station and the firemen responded quickly. He said although there were a few hiccups with the fire hydrants, with his help, the firemen were able to take control of the fire.

The police and the fire department are investigating the probable cause of the fire.

First you hang a “Red Flag” on their home making it as a “Labor House.” Then you help as needed and secure at least three more votes for the next election. And that’s how things work around here. Stay in line, you as you’re told and keep the machine going.

Religion is the opiate of the people. Politics and religion are twin evil brothers. They are used to control the mind from birth to the grave. Who are more hypocritical than political and religious leaders? Mr. Lionel , your rambling rhetoric is no more than unadulterated foolishness. I want to be fully compensated monetarily for the time that I took to read it.

Work for the people who voted you into the Parliament.
That ting you doing in Roseau North is not effective.
Besides I don’t think that the Roseau Central voters will excuse you for squandering their vote saying you had issues with the political leader of UWP and going independent.

Wallace the amazing thing is that you never hear the victims of disaster complain. When hurricane David devastated Dominica if you had no insurance or if your insurance was inadequate crapeau smoke your pipe and you were left to suck salt. To day we have a government that backs up its ideology of socialism by rescuing those in need, but gets all kind of negative accusations and derogatory names thrown at it.
When fire destroyed homes in Bath Estate,DLP government help to prevent them from becoming homeless, opposition gangbangers grumbled, Petite Soufriere people receive help by government settling them in tempt homes then built houses for them opposition forces raised the roof shouting, Dominicans got help re Erica, Mathew then Maria the M.I. A. quitting forces went madder. DLP stared to implement their policies of potable water and flushing toilet for all Dominicans the gang of destroyers stage protest, demonstrations, walkout, quitting and stage a coup. Go figure

Great point! The EC $270 000 000 has just disappeared in thin air. This money, from the Venezuelan government, was intended to help poor people not to line the pockets of politicians. Haitians rioted not too long ago over this exact issue. Why are Dominicans so docile and accepting. The entire country, regardless of political affiliation, should be severely outraged and demanding answers. Corruption in government deprives the least among us to suffer extreme hardships and insufferable pain and financial embarrassment. This regime scoffs at transparency and accountability. As long as influential people remain mum, the corruption coupled with the hardship will continue ad infinitum. Flog all these nefarious political candidates with your votes.

so Jamie they should just take the people property right? The land doesn’t belong to the governmnt so the onus is on the owners to sell or build something better on it, you people are always first to talk why??? the more all you foolish the more all you talk… YOUR COMMENT MAKES NO SENSE!!!!!

i can hear you complaining with the owners if the government just send an order evicting them from their 100 year old property to build something bigger and better in the city as you suggested… you will be the first to jump up and say DICTATORSHIP in Dominica and encourage the family to burn down Roseau…. idiot!!!!!

Hiccups with the fire hydrants which a DOWASCO employee had to assist the fire department. We find this acceptable? Also who is paying to assist the fire victims. I agree they should get assistance and I know they lost everything and I do feel bad for them but when the government says they will provide assistance where does that money come from. Why does a disaster have to happen for the government to provide assistance? Wouldn’t it be cheaper for the government to tear down all the dilapidated homes and construct new ones that look better? The Government can pay to relocate the people while they are building the new homes instead of waiting for a fire to destroy their homes? What about people who live in other homes in Roseau that is of the same condition, should they just burn down their homes and wait for government assistance.

So if these people had gotton their fair share, there would be no need for them and anyone to depend on the government for help Joseph Isaac https://venezuelanalysis.com/news/13512

Venezuela has written off Dominica’s outstanding PetroCaribe debt of more than US$100 million.

Jorge Arreaza, Venezuela’s minister of foreign affairs, said Tuesday that he had been instructed by President Nicolas Maduro to announce the move as a gesture of solidarity between the two nations.

“Due to the difficult conditions our sister people of Dominica is facing after Hurricane Maria, Venezuela announces the start of a process of short-term and long-term debt forgiveness,” he said during a forum on climate change organized by the United Nations and the Caribbean Community of Regional Integration.

“This is to allow the government of brother prime minister of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit, funds for the reconstruction of his country as well as the creation of fiscal space to access new credit,” the foreign minister continued.

So Red Ants Bite and the others — I forgive what you owe me so you do not have to pay me, so you can use what you would pay me to help in your…

What is “fair share” and where does it comes in, now if the Govt. has money to build the country, should the Govt. only go about willy nilly and spreading money to every body? This would spell disaster

    January 29, 2019

When Joseph Isaac and the government promise to help fire victims they trying to create the impression that they care about the people of Dominica. However, the fact of the matter is while we welcome all the help from the government we must not forget that after Maria, Venezuela cancelled our Petro Caribe debt of OVER US$100 to help the people of Dominica. To transfer it into our EC currency that would be over EC$270 million dollars which means with a population of 70,000 people, there was enough money to give each person EC$3 million dollars and the government would still have a surplus of over EC$60 million dollars. We have been saying is debt forgiveness of US$100 million dollars but according to the facts it is over $100 million dollars. Where is that money JI? What has been done with it? Do you know anyone that got over $1 million? Skerrit and the DLP have people going up the steps of financial center not realizing Skerrit got enough money to make everyone a multi millionaire

Excellent analyses! Where has all that over EC$ 270 000 000 gone? The local news media are too timid, the business sector too busy seeking concessions, the clergy too concerned with filling the offering baskets, and the rest of civil society too concerned in trying to put food on the table. The media and the people should hold the government’s feet to the fire on these two, the PetroCaribe disappearing act of over EC $270 000 000 and the CBI finances. This accountability is owed to the public. The funds belong to each and every Dominican. They are not Mr. Skerrit’s personal monies. As I have stated previously, people have rioted in Haiti and another country which escapes me at the present moment for the unknown whereabouts of the PrtrCaribe funds..
