Officials of the Office of Disaster Management continue to appeal to the public especially those in the special disaster areas to remain vigilant.

Program Officer, Steve Joseph explained to GIS News on Tuesday that with the high saturation levels of the soil following Tropical Storm Erika and subsequent tropical waves, nationals should remain on watch.

“We continue to inform the public of the risks which exist especially in communities already compromised. There are nine special disaster areas and other critical areas which have already been impacted,” he said. “We are hoping that people remain tuned to the radio and any source of [reliable] information so that threatening events do not catch them in dangerous areas.”

He named Coulibistrie which is still heavily silted and could, according to him, “easily be flooded again.”

Joseph advised to heed advisories and move early to safer homes.

Several communities were declared special disaster areas after the passing of Tropical Storm Erika. They are: Paradise Valley in Bath Estate, Petite Soufriere, Good Hope, Dubique, Petite Savanne, Pichelin, Coulibistrie, Campbell and San Sauveur.

Their relocation should ONLY be temporary. Things happen that we just can’t avoid, we should not be going to displace everyone affected by weather phenomenon. Can you imagine displacing all of our west coast because of a freak tsunami, like hurricane Lenny caused in 1999?? I think we have to think long and hard, this happens in lots of countries without having to displace whole populations. Food for thought, as this will not occur annually! Weather phenomena happen.

We can only pray faithfully, and with trust in God, that Tropical Storm Erika was enough for us–dear God we cannot afford any more damage than we already have right now.

It is true that Your hand was in that strike from Erika, and You alone know why.

I pray O God, that the majority of us, have put on our hearing ear and our mind of attention to You; Your mercy and compassion of Love, is what we are asking from You now, not another of that kind of strike from another Tropical Storm –hear us O Lord, in Jesus name.
