St Jude Hospital in St. Lucia, has donated over 600 pounds of relief supplies in aid of the recovery efforts in Dominica following the devastation left in the wake of Tropical Storm Erika last week.

Among the donated supplies are clothing for adults and children as well as gloves, gauze and female kits. The items, sourced from the hospital’s storage, will go towards helping the victims of the storm, a press release stated.

Dr. Chierry Poyotte, Chief Executive Officer stated, “St Jude Hospital has been the beneficiary of the generosity of a great number of persons and institutions. This was especially after the devastating fire of 2009. We are now presented with an opportunity to demonstrate our goodwill and our appreciation for this kind of support over the years. We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to work as an institution with the people of Dominica to alleviate some of the suffering that we are most certain that they are experiencing right now.”

The donated items will be shipped to Dominica via a cargo vessel chartered by Cable and Wireless to transport relief supplies to Dominica. This donation will ultimately be handed over to the Dominica Red Cross for distribution to those affected by the storm.

St Jude Hospital is also spearheading a separate internal donation drive in support of the relief efforts. Hospital staff are being encouraged to donate items based on the priority list issued by the Government of Dominica.

Those items will be handed over to the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) for transportation to Dominica.

Dr. Carlene Radix, St Jude Hospital’s Medical Director stated: “As a hospital family, we are pulling together to donate whatever we can in terms of canned goods and other items that have been requested so that, through NEMO, we can continue our donation efforts.”

St Jude Hospital thanks Cable and Wireless for help getting the supplies here and the hospital staff for their generosity in responding to the needs of Dominica.
