Prince died in the accident
Prince died in the accident

A student from the North East Comprehensive High School, Paul Prince, was killed in an accident on Thursday afternoon.

Police PRO, Inspector John Carbon, said the accident occurred around 4:30 pm in a collision between a Nissan pickup truck and a bicycle being ridden by Prince.

The pick up truck was being driven by Patrickson Shillingford of Woodford Hill.

Carbon stated that Prince sustained multiple injuries and was transported to the Marigot Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A coroner’s inquest will be convened and a post mortem will follow.

Investigations are continuing, Carbon said.

My sincere condolences to the family.
This! my fellow Dominicans is why we need a state of the art hospital NOT a state Palace. I am sure they could have saved this young mans life with the proper 911 first responders in place.
I pray for peace for the mother and father and siblings of this young boy.

I am so sorry to read of a young, promising life, a student is gone through a vehicular accident. Too young! Sadly, we cannot bring him back. However, it leaves me wondering who is at fault and could this accident have been avoided.
I can imagine the driver of the vehicle is saddened that a young life is lost. I do visualize that it is traumatic for him. May God help you and grant you peace.
To the family of young Prince, my prayers are with you as you mourn his loss. God be with you.

Gone to soon. What a wast of life, so so young. The road in Calibishie Village needs to be a 20 MPH zone as there are no pedestrian side walk. My condolence to the family, villagers and friends. RIP Prince.

Condolences to the boys family. We know all of us human beings are capable of good and bad. But the truth is the truth. Children always should have respect for their parents. Our parents are not always right, but let the Lord deal with them. Because the Bible also say, parents provoke not your children to anger.

Everything we do in life be it good or bad, there are consequences. If we do good in school, we know the outcome is positive. If we do bad in school, we know the consequences are negative. That’s the fact of life. I have children of my own, but I am not with them 24 hours a day. I will like to know they are not doing bad things, but if they are doing bad things and I am covering up for them, u bet things are going to blow up in my face. Lord help us and help our children to obey their parents, and obey the laws of society.

    March 22, 2014

Over the past 20 years there has been a number of vehicular accidents taking place in Calibishie. I pray this would be the last one.

1996/97 – An accident involving Mr. Armour took the life of a school boy near the Calibishie primary school.

A few years after, a young boy was hospitalized after getting into an accident with a vehicle while crossing the street near Calibishie Ridge junction. He survived.

A few years later, Cocoshat (deceased) was hit by a vespa on the road near the Calibishie Ridge junction. Less than two weeks later, he died from his injuries.

A few years after, Tehbeh…deaf old man…was hit by a speeding motorcycle. He was later confined to his bed and never fully recovered until he died.

A few years later…Curvin was hit by a van in the corner above Tony’s tire shop. He survived the accident.

Now…Prince is dead from another accident.

It is time that we enforce the speed limit in Calibishie and anyone above the limit should be ticketed and fined. I call on the POLICE to enforce the speed limit in the community. I call on the the leaders and representatives of the community to take up the matter to the appropriate authorities. We’ve had too many lives lost through vehicular accidents. Let us do what is necessary to prevent another one from happening.

    R.I.P Prince

This is very true. The speed limit in built-up areas must be 20 MPH. This is a small Island and it does not take long to go anywhere even at that speed. It is well documented that there is 60% pedestrian survival if the car is doing 20MPH and >80% fatality when doing 30MPH. Drink driving should be prosecuted and mobile phones should not be used whilst driving.

This brought tears to my eyes
This boy always made me smile every time I come home on vacation. Always full of energy and life, you could not pass in the village and not here his name call, he will surely be missed by me and all who know him.

This is indeed a very very sad moment. Some folks may say this is not the time or place, but I am using this to plead with all children please please respect your parents, teachers and authority figure.
Let us be honest, this young boy was extremely defiant, rude and had no respect for his mother. Her heart is breaking I am so so certain but we need to always know that the word of the Lord is true. Children obey your parents that your days may be long ….. . Let this be a wake up call for those of you who continue to be rude and rebellious, he did not get the opportunity to say Mom I am sorry. We need to take every lesson out of every situation. Let this be a lesson for all of us. BE RESPECTFUL AT ALL TIMES.

Now is not the time, nor will it ever be to pass judgement or to deign to know God’s will. In this time of extreme grief for his parents, grief that will probably never be abated, I am sure that his mother wishes to have just one more moment with that “rude boy”. Learn some empathy. My condolences to the young man’s family. God bless and be encouraged.

As far as I read the comments were not made to pass judgement. They were stating facts. I know of a similar incident last year where a 16 year old lost his life in a vehicular accident. Again, a hard headed and disrespectful child. His mother had no idea he had left the house. She could not control him. Of course, her heart grieves for her lost child, as any mother’s would. Growing up, my father would drill this saying into our heads “disobedient children must get a blow.”

      SO TRUE

    • Simply the Truth
      March 23, 2014

Yes! Be broadminded, caring and merciful. You should not have brought this up at a time as this when family members are mourning his loss. No matter what, they will mourn his accidental and sudden death for he is a son, a brother, relative and friend. God knows that everyone, child or adult has some good and bad in them.
We should not blame the children until we hear two sides to the story. Are there any children on this earth who never back-chatted to their parents? How many children are willfully rude to their parents?
Children are children and will always be children. Realistic parents who also look back will make this identical statement. They will also admit their fault, their attitude toward their children.
Some parents could cause their children to back-chat/talk which is what it should be termed. They are impatient, shout at them, go on and on and never stop, even bringing up matters not related to the children which annoy them and cause them to talk-back.
If you know what is contained in Holy Scriptures, it is stated, “Parents do not annoy your children”; words to that effect. This is why some children may appear rude and leave home.
How many parents take a parental course and on how to communicate with their children? Some are not aware of that. I rest my views. This is food for your thoughts. Give it a good one.

My heartfelt sympathy to each and everyone of you, his family. I realize it is no easy time for you and the rest of your family and that the shock of it is difficult to bear.
We all have lost loved ones, young and older and will in the future as long as our life lasts. Only God knows how and by whatever means. The more we should be sympathetic.
St. Paul said: “Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep.” It is a godly, Christian attribute and obligation which God has commanded and expects of us.
God sees your grief. It always hurts his Most Sacred Heart when especially his people are sad and in mourning. This is why He is ever so near with his divine consoling love and help.
Our Lord Jesus Christ said, “I will never forget you My people. I have carved you in the palm of my hand. I will never forsake you. I will not leave you orphaned. I will never forget My own…”
His consoling power will see you through. Take heart. God bless you and your family.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him, May his soul rest in peace. Amen!

I and my family extend heartfelt sympathy to the family of Paul Prince. I do not know what happened, but I am sure that Shillingford and his family is also feeling it too. It didn’t have to take this one for us to realize that many villages in Dominica need speed bumps, especially places like Calibishie which already have had accidents of that sort occurring there. A human life is far to expensive, let us exercise the foresight in our planning.

    • christine connell
      March 21, 2014

My sympathy goes to both families concerned in this terrible tragedy…

Calibishie residents have requested speed bumps on the road on many occasions.

Residents at the time even offered to do this work without cost to the Village Council, but it was refused on the understanding it has to be approved by the Government.

Considering we have speed signs for 20 mph. when entering the Village I see very few drivers adhere to this.
In fact I have seen some drivers in excess of 60 mph.
So we have too see unfortunate accidents and deaths, before someone somewhere wakes up to the fact the traffic has to be slowed down.

      • AAA
        March 21, 2014

I doubt the driver was speeding, he is a senior, but yes we do need speed bumps in calibishie

      • Eyeballs
        March 22, 2014

Maybe the residents of Calibishie should start protesting for speed bumps. I have been to Calibishie a few times and drivers drive way too fast in an area where there are lots of kids especially in vincinity of the school. It’s a residential area and not a highway

      • Simply the Truth
        March 23, 2014

As I have stated, a lot has to be done in Dominica. Each politician which represents those ridings/villages and each government department should be notified and they should do something about it so as to avoid future accidents, injuries and fatalities.
Radars should also be placed on the roads. If drivers and riders of other vehicles do not adhere to it, they should pay the consequences of charges. A life does not have to be lost for this to be implemented.
I must inform you further that I reside in Canada and the identical situation occurs. People have to die prior to government succumbing under the weight of public criticisms and lobbying to make those changes. It makes me angry. It could happen to anyone of us. They put cost before lives. I have stated and will continue to state that God will hold those authorities accountable be it when they die.
The people of Calibishie and other villages should make a note of what should be done, what is dire necessity and inform the politicians who represents those areas. They must be persistent and persevere. God bless and good luck.

      March 23, 2014

Why are we not talking about that tall grass on the road, none of them could see each other coming, sadly someone had to die. I think the villagers need to do something, small children walk that rozad everyday from school and as a driver myself you cannot see anything coming. I personally believe that the height of the grass was responsible

      • Simply the Truth
        March 23, 2014

For safety sake, such types of trees and grass which impede the vision of drivers should be trimmed or cut down. Inform your politician or village council about it.

Not surprised at all. See them driving through the villages sometimes in excess of 50 mph. The other day I saw a policeman watching one of them speeding. Action? None! The police needs to start to enforce speed limits in the villages.
