Suspected arson at Pointe Michel Catholic church

Several pews were damaged in the fire
Several pews were damaged in the fire

A fire at the Catholic church building on Friday  evening in Pointe Michel is being treated as suspected arson by the authorities.

Reports are that the fire broke out at about 8:30 pm.

The fire department in Roseau responded to the blaze.

Several pews inside the church were damaged or destroyed.

It is unknown how the fire began but DNO can confirm that the matter is being treated as arson.

Parish priest Fr. Peter Wamutitu reported that several weeks ago, a Dominican flag, which was at the front of the church, was stolen.

DNO will continue to follow this story.

The pt Michel police are worthless ,if you don’t believe me ask the village people , I have had my own experience with them, you call them they , show up a day later, that is on a good, day or they will tell you he is the only one at the station therefore he cant leave the station, when you asked where are the other officer they wont tell you, and that is because he is at his girlfriends house when he should be at work , they know who the pyromaniac is he was caught red handed ,and release.
I hope the superintendent of police will read this and transfer those inept cops Pte Michel deserve better.

So, tell me, the statues inside the church couldn\’t identify the arsonist (s)? They should get rid of the St. \”Peter\” statue, along with the other statues. You pray to them for protection, and they couldn\’t protect the church which house them??? Are you kidding me??!!

If you have the blessing and grace of God and were godly enlightened you would refrain from such a comment. You would be broadminded and practice it. Do you not know that you offended God in addition to annoying those of us who read your ungodly comment?
God could have prevented it. Of course! But He allowed it for you to show what is embedded in your mind, for others to know the type of person you are. It is no compliment to you.
The same with you, if you practice the faith, pray to God and perform good deeds. As you do, should some evil/harm befall you, you will say, “Why me, etc.”

God also allowed it to show D/cans, all others who read this article and your comment, the type of wicked person one could be.
He also allowed it to show the person who committed this evil deed what the good people who comment on this Website think of him. If he reads it or hears their comments also on Radio and TV, he could be remorseful and ask God forgiveness.
So there are many reasons why God allows these things to happen. You know there is evil and good in the world; Dominica is no exception. Note also your words.
God is the one who performs miracles. When we pray to the saints, they intercede for us. Heaven knows what that wicked man did and your unbecoming words. His punishment is forthcoming. Yours too in whatever manner.
God also allows it to bring out a greater good. Consider disasters. He tests everyone also based on their comments and actions. If you fail and you have, too bad for you. If you did not know that, hope you learn something good.

We pray only to “… Our Father which are in heaven …” (Luke 11:2) in the name of Jesus Christ His Son (John 14:13) We do not have statues, images, or even pictures in our churches mainly because we believe it would be contrary to Exodus 20:4.

Years ago when I was the pastor of an evangelical church in Canada I was stricken with what could have been a fatal illness and had to have emergency surgery. A Roman Catholic priest came to the hospital and prayed for me. Then a Baptist pastor came in and prayed for me. They both prayed the same way to our Father in the name of our Lord Jesus :!: The priest went back to his Charismatic prayer meeting and had the group pray for me.

The surgery was on a Sunday afternoon. The next Sunday morning I was back preaching in my own pulpit.
My family doctor said it was the quickest recovery he had ever seen from that kind of surgery. He was an elderly physician on the verge of retirement.

If you are a Christian I hope you will appreciate all who believe in our Lord Jesus Christ even if they disagree with some of your beliefs and do some things differently. Share what you believe
without arguing and listen to their point of view.

        Salvation is ONLY in Christ.

“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)

Read your New Testament. Believe and practice what you see on its sacred pages. Do not compromise its truth. Be able to show any person the right verse of scripture for what you are saying. But do it kindly, and respectfully.

My friend regarding the church fire please understand this. God was watching. He could have intervened at any moment and stopped it. He did not need any help from St. Peter or any of the Saints. Sometimes we learn later that God had a reason for what He allowed. Often He allows it for a purpose.

        Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Evangelist.

The Catholic Priest believes all what the One Holy Catholic Church believes and teaches. You believe he helped heal you through his prayers. Then consider it. Believe what you believe, we Catholics believe what we believe as taught. In the eyes of God, we are not wrong and we cannot go wrong.
We are baptized Christians who know about Holy Scripture. The Holy Mass which the Catholic Church celebrates daily in all parts of the world, in some churches many times a day consists of Our Lord Jesus Christ’s, Life, Passion, Crucifixion and Resurrection. So is the Holy Rosary which He gave to His Mother, the Ever Blessed Virgin Mary to give to the world. Read the book, The Secret of the Rosary written by St. Louis de Montfort.
If someone came to you and told you about the devil you would believe but not so about the Catholic Church and Its devotions and The Mother of God. All these will be revealed to you one day. Faithful Catholics will be laughing joyfully then.

God is more loving, patient, compassionate and merciful than we are. However, this perpetrator will have to pay some price before God, even though he repents. Evil deeds do not go unpunished. He has to make amends, whatever it may be.
There is a condition for forgiveness. They are genuine worship, fervent prayer, repentance, reparation and good works in Jesus Name. This is a prerequisite for forgiveness and entering Heaven.
Our Lord said: “Only those who do the Will of his (our) heavenly Father will enter his Kingdom.”

    • @Shame July 24, 2016

Jesus is the Pillar of the Church–there can be no other–especially not one who tries to destroy the Church House.

And if the house is what you refer to as the Church, that is a false idea; the Church is the people, who represents the Body of Jesus, He is the head.

That is why the name of a Church should not matter, we should be thinking about ourselves as one big family–the Great Family of God Almighty in Christ Jesus.

  6. Regardless of what denomination it is, the Church House is a physical Temple where believers gather to worship God and fellowship as a congregation. Believe it or not, that place should be respected; what kind a person would think of setting it on fire?

I hope it wasn\’t arson, because if is was so, that individual or individuals will live with a very heavy conscience for a long time to come–of course, that would be if they had a conscience in the first place–good Lord!

When I resided in Dominica I went to this Church a few times to the Novena to Our Lady of La Salette, the Holy Name of this Church. The D/can pilgrims would leave home early. All of us walked from Roseau to Pointe Michel, prayerfully, to this Church for the Holy Mass and Novena. My mother and I attended. We returned for the Feast Day. A sacrifice to Our Lord and Our Lady. :)
I recall a Hymn which was sung to Our Lady of La Salette. Occasionally I still sing it. I hope I remembered all the words. Pointe Michel Catholics or other, please let me know if all the words are correct. I remember them from memory many years ago.
As time progressed, the world got worst. Some years ago Our Lady said to a visionary: “The world is in a state of sin, worst than at the deluge. It is necessary for God to purify the world.”
Today, note the world is worst yet. I often say, “How much more could God take/put up with? We Christians, should have reasons for concern.

    • @Tell the Facts July 23, 2016—\”Some years ago Our Lady said to a visionary: “The world is in a state of sin, worst than at the deluge\”—What is this; what Our Lady?

Jesus said to us: “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. John 14: 6

But not only that; the Holy Bible speaks abouth the things which has happened, all that is happening now, and will come to happen in the future, so, why not speak as the Bible has informed you?

Referring to the times of today, Jesus assured us that it would be so, when He said to His disciples at Matthew 24: 37-39

\”But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be\”

So who is that \”Our Lay\” of yours?

      • Catholics maintain a zeal for RELIGION, having raised that way; including myself, but thanks to God, He redeemed me.

Apostle Paul teaches at Ephesians 4: 4-6 \”There is one Body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one Hope of your calling; one Lord, one Faith, one Baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all\”

That \”One Body\” are those who maintain a Relationship with God, the Lord, by their faith, that is what Paul means when he speaks of \”One\” all in all–there can be no such idea as Catholic faith, unless it is all about RELIGION

Jesus confirms this at Matthew 15: 6-8 \”Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition. Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah (29: 13) prophesy about you, saying: ‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. READ YOUR BIBLE :!:

The Holy Scriptures tell us what will be happening in the world just before Christ returns.

        Please read:

        Matthew 24:1-44
        Mark 13:3-23
        Luke 21:5-28
        1 Timothy 4:1-5
        2 Timothy 3:1-5
        2 Timothy 4:1-4
        2 Peter 2:1-7

God not only told us what was coming. He told us how to be saved from our sins so we would be ready for Christy’s return, and be prepared for eternity.

        Please read:

        Romans 5:6-9
        St. John 3:16,17
        St. John 3:36
        St. John 5:24
        1 John 5:11-13
        Ephesians 2:8,9
        Revelation 3:20

We have no need to see or hear an apparition.
We don’t need to hear from Mary the Mother of our Lord.

We need to read the Word of God and let the Holy Spirit speak to us from its sacred pages because it is written …

“…faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” (Romans 10:17)

The Word of God tells us

“…Believe on the lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved…” (Acts 16:31)

Hymn to Our Lady of La Salette

In tears Our Lady showed herself, that day at La Salette
And begged that mortals make amends with penance and regret.

She spoke to him a shepherd boy and her a shepherdess
To spread the word throughout the world for hope and happiness.

She warned of famine and of pain and ever greater pain
That those who disrespect Her Son and use His Name in vain.

Dear weeping Mother let us pray, to Your Beloved Son

The Catholic Church in Dominica have played a significant role in the lives of the citizens of our beloved Dominica, from schools, housing other services, like the Credit union, you may say it was Sister Alicia, bless her soul but she was a Nun, and the Church had to give her the go ahead to establish it.

Our Lord said: “If we do not forgive, neither will his (our) Heavenly Father forgive us. It is not easy trying to be a good Christian but the Lord has demanded it of us. He said: “Be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect.” He also said: “Vengeance is mine. I will repay.” If we love God we will not hurt others. We will receive his blessing and graces. We must “do as we are told.” We will be happy for it and experience peace of mind.
We pray for the person that he might repent and ask God forgiveness. So you see we wish everyone well, even our enemies.
Our Lord also told us to, “Love our enemies. Do good to those who hate us and turn the other cheek.” In so doing, we will benefit from it.
I reiterate, it is not easy as we know very well. God is good! This means, He will repay everyone according to their works, in words and deeds. It is not for us to do. If we do good, we will be the winner, triumphant, especially on that inevitable day.

Steve, this is an old cliche. The priest will never do that. There is a tendency to retaliate. Our Lord told us to love one another and to forgive. As difficult as it is, no matter the hurt, we must pray for the person; not easy but we must.
The person has placed lemiere on himself. His action will condemn and punish him. When people plan to do such things, harm others, they never think that God knows, sees and hears all things. The person is possessed by the devil.
As I write this, the program on the US Catholic Radio is on Mercy, forgiving one another. You know The Our Father. “. . . And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. . . .”
I once heard a US priest state on forgiveness, “If we cannot forgive others, we better not say The Our Father.” It makes sense for we ask God to forgive us. We say, “As we forgive. . .” If we do not forgive we are contradicting ourselves and disobeying God.

The fact of the Dominican Flag being stolen from in front of the church suggests the worst.

To damage somebody else’s property is a crime. To damage a house of worship is especially bad.

I just want to share this. I recall a period of time here in Canada when there were a significant number of church fires not far apart in rapid succession. It seemed to be the work of an arsonist but I didn’t hear of an arrest. Either it was the same party OR copycat behavior. Please be careful. Be watchful. In a situation like this BE YOUR BROTHERS KEEPER :!: If you see something suspicious report it QUICKLY. If there seems to be a car involved get the license number.

I wonder. If the cause is electrical wiring would it not burn down the entire church? If it were, water would not be able to put it out easily.
If it is arson, I hope the police will find out what type of chemical was used. When this is ascertained, they must consider the person bought it somewhere in D/ca/Roseau. They should speak to store owners who would sell it and inquire who bought it, how much and when. This is how such criminals are caught.
Or did the person throw kerosene or gasoline on the benches? A good investigator will consider all this.

This is good thinking. It is the way I would expect the authorities to approach the investigation. Of course other possibilities would be considered.

        Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Evangelist.

What diaspora you appealing to there nuh? Appeal to the community and Catholic Church in Rome since the Vatican is the richest institution in the world. Or better yet ask Skerro bcuz unfortunately the church has become his and Tus’ playground.

      Always Assertive!

Why should a right thinking person set fire to a church building and why should the stealing of the flag be associated with the arson? I’m listening

      July 24, 2016

It is strange isn’t it? Could be the same person. Anyway, God knows who did it. We can only speculate.

    • July 25, 2016

      Steal the flag :?:

Set fire to the church :?:

Why do these two things :?:

      Here is one possibility:

It may have nothing in particular to do with it being a CATHOLIC church. It could have been ANY church.
To this sick mind it was an assault on GOD ALMIGHTY who he thinks a church represents.

      But here is a probability:

It could be a lapsed Catholic with bad memories – a disturbed person who striking back. Somebody who feels he (she) has not received justice. These cases fester as time passes and then ……

However, it could be an arsonist on the rampage. If so he (she) will likely strike again, and may hit other buildings, not just churches. You would look for somebody with arson on his (her) criminal record, that is if he (she) has been previously convicted.

It is most likely a male but these days we have to be politically correct and not discriminate, etc., etc.

      Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Evangelist.

This is not a “right thinking person” but there is a reason. It would be one of several possibilities. But to link the FLAG and the CHURCH in addition to one of these possibilities I offer this.

This is a person who has a problem with authority or anything that represents authority. Remember this is along with and in addition to whatever the main reason my be.

      CHURCH = GOD.

      FLAG = GOVERNMENT.

God + Government = AUTHORITY which has either given him a bad rap or cramped his style.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Evangelist. (Pastoral Counselor Certificate) 8)

Sad allow the Authorities to do their job. Ready or not, cctv cant be considered a magic Bullet, but why wait untill sad and heart broken situations hit Home? Just saying. Hope the investigations prove other wise.

That is a hate crime and should be treated as such, the person or persons responsible should be found and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Dominica is going down a bad road and it is not the fault of the government it is YOU the citizens who have lost your way, take a long hard look at yourselves and don’t follow the west.

  24. July 23, 2016

This is just not acceptable at all,a place of worship should never be desecrated by any one whether you believe in the God that the church goers worship or not.A part from being a church ,it is a historical monument which was built by or ancestors .We all have to move on with our lives ,if we don’t like what other appreciate but we must respect what each other like…I hope the person or persons that are responsible for such a heinous act will be arrested as soon as possible and pay for all the damages that are down …If this person is not stopped by the law,I think they might take the criminal behaviour to a higher level…

Do not be silly. The priest has his work to do. When he stands on the pulpit he speaks the Word of God. It is enough for everyone to hear, those who are listening and to practice it.
When last you prayed for your government and others in Dominica? You know you are obligated to do so.

Our Church and Priests are precious in the eyes of God. The last thing anyone should ever do is to tamper with them in anyway. This is also not to make derogatory remarks about them. Those who do will swiftly be punished.
I believe it is a male person. When something bad happens to him and hits him like a thunderbolt, he will commence crying and wailing. He will have brought it upon himself. There will be no end to his sorrow and suffering. It will affect him in a worst way, his household and all what he places his hands on.

What about you? Have you ever considered that God knows what you do morning, noon and night? You know how to deny yourself the blessing and grace of God.
Look to yourself, examine your conscience. As you have done, do not heap any more burning coals on your head lest you turn to ashes..
