Two taken to hospital following accident at Canefield

Passenger bus involved in accident at Canefield on Wednesday morning

Two passengers were taken to the hospital for treatment this morning as a result of a vehicular accident. The accident occurred at about 9 am near the gas station in Canefield .

According to a DNO reporter at the scene, two passengers were transported to the hospital in a private vehicle, complaining of head and leg pains after a passenger bus slammed into a Dominica Electricity Sercvices (DOMLEC) utility truck, resulting in major damage to the bus. There was minimal damage to the utility truck.

The driver of  bus #HF163 which was involved in the accident, told DNO news that faulty brakes were the cause of the accident.  He said the tried applying brakes but could not get the vehicle to stop or slow down.  The bus was carrying passengers from the Wesley/Woodford Hill/Marigot area to Roseau.

A group of police officers in the traffic at the time assisted in clearing the road and ensuring that everyone was okay.

Yes the driver will get something to blame but will not say he could not stop because he was driving to fast if he use brakes as an excuse the police should take the bus in for test and inspection I have seen these buses drive on the road and as if they are caring lumber and not passengers I am a state inspector in Texas and before a vehicle get it registration sticker it have to go through a inspection test. We use to Blanchard was a bad cop. but he use to go around the vehicles transporting passengers and look at their tires if they are worn he would write them up now we have more cops, no one is doing that some buses driving around with threads showing on the tires we need to treat these vehicle as high occupancy vehicles (HOV) and pay attention to then I know the owners have to pay their loans and have to hurry to make as many trips as they can but don’t put people live at stake then blame the brakes if you maintain your distance you would have stop you came all the from north.

I don’t buy this crap about brake failure caused accident!

The way manufactures builds Motor Vehicles in the twenty-first century, when a car, truck or what have you needs oil, or an oil change; on your panel (dashboard) there is an electronic read out which indicates that.

It will say low oil, or change oil;; when the brake fluid is low the brake becomes soft, because of accumulative air in the cylinder.

Normally these days, a service engine light will come on.

There are engine diagnostic instruments which any driver who can read; simply plugs into the circuits monitor, it diagnose the entire vehicle, brakes transmission, everything.

When the Rotters and brake pads or shoe are low below the recommended use, one should hear a grinding noise; due to metal to metal grinding, there is no excuse for brake failure these days.

    Driving trash is another thing!

Anybody who uses brake failure for an excuse should be sent to jail for the endangering human life!

That incident should be investigated by the police. This is a near miss which could have resulted in possibly life threatening injury or fatality.
This is where the police traffic department should place some of their focus and resource. if the right process are followed this should help avoid and further reduce road accidents.
I believe an example should be made of the driver to deter this kind of practice where ppl lives are being compromised.

The mandatory vehicle inspection in Dominica for road tax, tests only the handbrake and not the vehicle’s road brakes.

Having said that, most vehicles are now equipped with dual brake systems which allow some braking function should there be a failure in either the front or rear brakes. A warning light alerts the driver to this failure and hence the need to take caution.

Coming from the Wesley/Woodford Hill/Marigot area to Roseau, the journey from Pont Casse would have certainly tested the vehicle’s braking system and alerted the driver to a potential problem.

Seriously, driver?! You have heart say you are driving people around with faulty brakes?! Thank goodness there were no fatalities and no serious injuries.
