UPDATE: Dominican deacon dies in St. Lucia

Kevin Bellot

Dominican Roman Catholic deacon Kevin Bellot has passed away in St. Lucia weeks before he was to be ordained a priest.

He died on Sunday morning at a hospital and was 29 years old.

The cause of his death is unknown but a source told Dominica News Online he began complaining of stomach pains on Friday and was taken to hospital.

The source said he was doing well on Saturday and his death took everyone by surprise.

At the time of his death Bellot was doing ministry at Our Lady of Assumption parish in Vieux Fort, St. Lucia.

He was ordained a deacon in October, 2011 and was expected to be ordained a priest on August 8, 2012.

Bellot belonged to a world-wide religious order called the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer or Redemptorists. The order was founded by Alphonsus Ligouri in 1732 to serve the poor and the most abandoned.

Bellot joined the Redemptorists in 2001 and has worked in St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, in inner-city Philadelphia and New York, Boston and St. Lucia.

As part of his formation for the priesthood he completed degrees in philosophy and psychology at St. John’s University in New York, and professed his first vows as a Redemptorist in 2007 and his final vows in 2010.

He graduated in May from Boston College’s School of Theology and Ministry.

Bellot grew up in Loubiere and is the oldest brother to one sister.

I met Deacon Kevin at Brancker John’s ordination as a deacon on May 27. We spent some time in joyful and fraternal conversation. I offer my condolences and sympathy to Kevin’s family and to Bishop Malzaire and the great Catholic family of Dominica.

A statement was made by the Redemptorist. Deacon Kevin belonged to that congregation and they are the ones responsible for him. They were the ones who confirmed the news to the media. Hope that information helps. God bless you.

Our Lord Jesus Christ said, “I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself, that where I am, there you may be also.”

I believe the Lord was telling the truth. From every indication, Deacon Bellot strongly believed that as well…

    So welcome home Kev!
Rest now in the Everlasting Arms.
We who are left behind will comfort your loved ones to the extent that it is humanly possible till our turn comes.

Who are those idiot people disliking most comments made. YOUR TIME WILL COME WHEN YOU WILL LOSE SOMEONE AND You will know how it feels. Kevin was a good young man trying to serve the good Lord. May God grant him eternal rest and may his family find comfort in knowing that he is an angel watching over them now. Time heals.

To sister Jan and Kisha and all the rest of the extended La redoute family, I extend my deepest sympathy on the paasing of our very own. Kevin loved the Lord and wanted to serve him among the poor and down trodden. He was well on his way, but God had a different plan for him. May God give you all the strength and courage to live out what to us is a human tragedy. God’s ways are not ours. We plan one way and he plans otherwise so many timesw. Let us therefore be comforted in the knowledge that he is with his maker. May his soul rest in peace.

Death is never sudden. Christians believe in the word of God – which says
“No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Mark 13:32

I am saddened to hear of his passing. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and other souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen!

My heartfelt sympathy to all members of his family and friends in your time of sorrow. We will say that God had better plans for him. Nevertheless, the loss of a loved and promising one, especially so young is difficult to bear. May God sustain you at this time. Look to Jesus, Our Lord, King and Saviour and His Blessed Mother Mary, the Mother of all mothers. They will both cover you with their mantle of love, compassion and consolation and help you in your grief. God bless you!

For one so young, his passing will make others feel suspicious. I do hope that a proper autopsy will be conducted and that the cause of his death will be truly revealed.

Those who perform the autopsy should also check for what he ate and drank prior to his passing.

    Rest in peace, loved one!

Confirmed by whom? The family do not have confirmation. The news came via telephone conversation of his passing. In sudden deaths such as this a Post Mortem is done to determine definate cause of death.
The family is heart warmed by the out pouring of love and sympathy, however please be respectful at this difficult time for them. There is no need to speculate at this time.

  65. June 10, 2012

He was so young! 28 or 29 years old is really too young for a person like Kevin Bellot to have died–I mean that as a deacon, he should have known about living with the hope for Life, and speaking against death by his faith.

DNO I hope that you will be able to find out more and to tell us what was the cause of his death. It is just very sad and meaningless when death happens to someone as young as Kevin Bellot–a man intending to be anointed as a priest of God.

O God where do we go from here, what do we do and what do we say when we do not understand; or we really do not know who is the ruler of our lives, as we exist in this world?

And so we ask You to take our hands dear God, cause us to enter Your Rest where Life is Your eternal gift to us, of which Joy and peace is the energy that moves us.

We send our request through faith in You, dear God. Our call is for Life in the name of Your Son–Jesus Christ–our Father, You who are in heaven; please hear our prayers. Amen!

My condolences to the family. I don’t understand the wishes for a dead person to Rest in Peace. Is there a choice? Are not all the dead resting in peace? I just don’t get it.

everyone expresses themselves differently, and no not every soul rests in peace, from the looks of it..urs will not cause u don’t seem to be at peace all now…regardless of ur opinion of the term “rip” please have enough respect for the family and friends of the young man who just passed and go open a blog or something if ur board. this news post wasn’t meant for people like u to deal with ur pet peeves..smdh…a classmate and friend of Kevin’s to present again I say RIP KEV..

    • June 10, 2012

Kevin is resting in peace knowing he was connected to Christ his lord and personal saviour and joint heir with Christ. others can be “restless in the pit’ if they don’t know who their Lord and Saviour. Understand now? Resting in peace is not restricted to death or unconsciousness.

      @ Lorry

What planet are you residing on? Are you a human being and a Christian one at that? Do you need any explanation of this? When people die, we wish that their souls are resting in peace. We, as human beings and Christians at that are obligated to wish them that. God knows where their souls are. It is not for us to judge. However, depending on their lifestyle in the Lord, we can conclude that they are resting at peace, in the Lord.

the person who keep on disliking all the condolence messages. I wish you the best of luck. You seem to be an individual who hasn’t got a sympathetic nerve in your body I hope that if and when you are ever faced with a tragic situation such as the one Kevin’s family is facing, you (as you are doing now) will openly dislike any words of sympathy which may come your way. Peace be with you.

proud to be a catholic? one day i was walking along the eggleston road to roseau a few drivers passed and did not offer a ride and what i find that was humorous about the incident was the sticker on their vehicles boldly saying PROUD BE A CATHOLIC . I am not a churchian but i am proud to be a good samaritan.

Condolences to the family may his soul rest in peace.

John the Baptiste, Does anyone owe u a ride i don’t think so. These days there are so many wicked people on earth giving someone u don’t know a ride can be dangerous. People are desperate vehicle owners think first before giving just anyone a ride.

        @ Concerned

Well stated. This person, John the Baptiste should change his name or his On-line name. He is not worthy of this holy name. He is not a good reflection of the genuine John the Baptist in Holy Scriptures.
I am also a proud Catholic. I reside in Toronto. When I came to this country, as a Dominican, I was a very friendly and trusting person and to a certain degree I still am. However, through the years, the amount of crimes/murders/break and enter, etc., in this city, I have become a different person, not as friendly and trusting as I was.
It is stated in the book, Imitation of Christ, be a good Samaritan but do not be too quick to befriend people or to defend them and bring them into your home.
In this age, the same applies in Dominica. In view of the crimes/murders, even Catholics who have the sticker on their vehicles should not take the chance and give people whom they do not know a ride. God protects those who protect themselves. He did not tell us to take changes with our lives.
DNO has prevented anyone from responding to this man’s comments. Therefore, if John the Baptiste reads this, it is not in the Holy Bible, that we should give people whom we do not know a ride. God knows the type of era we are residing in. He knows the type of people who are asking for a ride. The drivers do not know that. They must be careful who they give a ride. If this man has any sense he should know that. Furthermore, there are many buses today than there were in previous years and when Dominica was a safer place and those who hitch rides could be trusted. Let them take a bus. They run later than in previous years.
