UPDATE: Dr. Sam Christian airlifted to Martinique for medical attention

Dr. Christian being taken to the air ambulance

United Workers Party (UWP) candidate for the Soufriere Constituency, Dr. Sam Christian, was earlier this evening airlifted to Martinique for medical attention.

Dr. Christian was seriously injured in an accident at Pointe Michel on Saturday in which he got pinned by his own vehicle.

Dr. Christian was admitted to hospital on Saturday afternoon with an injury to his pelvis.

UWP Deputy Leader, Joshua Francis, said in a post on Facebook on Saturday evening, that Dr. Christian had been admitted to the Alford Ward of the Princess Margaret Hospital.

On Sunday morning, in an updated Facebook message, Francis stated that arrangements had been made to get Dr. Sam out of PMH-ICU and flown to Martinique today (Sunday Dec 3rd).

“We must keep praying without ceasing,” Francis said.

However, the arrangements spearheaded by Health Minister, Dr. Kenneth Darroux, on behalf of the government, to bring in an air ambulance to airlift Dr. Christian to Martinique for the required surgery, experienced some delay and he was eventually flow out of Canefield airport sometime after 6:00 pm.

“Dr. Sam has finally been boarded and headed to Martinique. May the host of healing Angels travel with him while we hope for a full and speedy recovery,” Francis stated in a Facebook post shortly afterwards.

Francis had said earlier in a WhatsApp message, that medical staff at the PMH reported that Dr. Christian was conscious.

“His heart is doing well. He speaks. He’s stable in certain respects but unfortunately, he is still subject to internal bleeding and that is a bigger concern,” Francis explained. “So, let us pray and let us hope for the best.”

Meanwhile, the family of Dr. Christian released a statement on the matter, signed by his brother, Gabriel Christian.

“In this moment of grave concern over the life of Dr Sam Christian, his mother Mrs. Alberta Christian, the Christian family and friends wish to thank  the Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, the Leader of the Opposition Lennox Linton, Sam’s attorney Joshua Francis, Cecil Joseph,  Adenauer “Washway” Douglas, Matt Peltier, Alicia & Trudy Christian, Pearl Christian, Dr Hazel Shillingford-Ricketts,  Dr Dale Dangleben, Dr Irving Pascal, the attending physicians and staff of the Princess Margaret Hospital, alongside ordinary citizens at home and abroad who have rallied with humanitarian fervor in this moment,” the statement.

It said that Dr. Christian did his best for Dominica when he could and and added that he will continue to do his best “to unite and prosper our nation by God’s grace.”

“May the exemplary conduct of all concerned, on both sides of the aisle in our homeland and Diaspora, be a salutary message which directs us toward a better and more unified dispensation,” the family stated. “As we seek to aid Dr. Sam Christian in his darkest hour, we know it is that love and unity he would want to see made manifest in our land. We pray that his life be saved.”

To many bad things have happened to Dr. Sam since he returned to DA to try to do good. I hope that he pulls through without any permanent injuries or impediments and makes a speedy recovery. May God be with you.

Dominica needs their own air ambulance helicopter survive to pick up patents in remote areas of the island saving valuable time getting to a hospital. Surely the PM can come up with the money to buy a few helicopters? He has received millions in the sale of passports.

My heart goes out to Dr. Sam Christian and his family at this critical time in his life. He is truly a concerned doctor and has a heart for the needy. May the whole universe unleash healing powers toward his injuries at this time and may he survive that unfortunate accident. To his family I say, keep believing and trusting for his recovery because he is a fighter in his own rights.

Some Dominicans have become so blind and devoid of common sense that it begs to wonder, just what’s in the water at home. I doubt anyone is trying to politicize the unfortunate accident of Dr. Sam Christian. The issue we’re having is, what if you can’t afford to be flown to Martinique for medical treatment? What happens then? Let’s assume that the government is paying. If they are, is this best use of our medical dollars vis-à-vis an entire population? Furthermore, what happened to the state of the art hospital that we were promised as part of the MOU with the People’s Republic of China? In the end, we just want to see Dr. Sam healed from his injuries and back at home fighting the good fight.

Once again we see opposition forces trying to make a human assisted matter into a political issue. On Q 95 this morning we heard all kinds of negative comments. Even gayboo, his brother could not help criticizing the people who were on the tarmac. He could not stop at expressing gratitude for the action token to save his brothers life, but had to go on blasting.
Look at some of the negative posts above trying to downplay a show of mercy to a Dominican, living in Dominica.
The people who participated in this rescue should be congratulated, so instead of trying to use this issue to blast the government we should be appreciative of the fact that humanitarian mercy is alive and well in Dominica. Those involved in this rescue should be congratulated.

  7. WHAT IF?
    December 3, 2018

The air lifting of Dr. Sam Christian raises many questions you know. What we saw yesterday should not be taken likely because what we saw is a very serious. I don’t want to sound political but the first question that comes to mind is, WHAT IF Dr. Dale Dangleben phone was out? I ask that question because I have heard the prime Minister and other members as well as friends of the government, criticize those in the DIASPORA, and refer to them as people that trying to run the country online. But had it not been for the internet service of Dale Dangleben Dr. Sam would probably be in a different world today. Many of you in the DIASPORA come down during independence; what IF what if it were you? Many come down for Carnival; what if it happened to you? Many come down to VOTE; but WHAT IF you had to go through what Dr. Sam went through? WHAT if it was a family member or friend? These are the serious questions we MUST ask ourselves because DA is not getting any better but worse by the day

Who is Dale Dangleben? Just another doctor who did precisely what the doctors at the ICU would know to do and would have done if he had not called. Do you realize that on a daily basis, the PMH deals with a number of urgent cases, and brings back from the dead (figuratively speaking) a number of critical cases at the ICU? We lack some key services at the PMH but never underestimate the competence of the staff there. They win many victories for our families every day, for the rich and the poor as well. You simply will not hear about them on any show on Q95.

My sincerest wish is for Dr. Sam to make a complete recovery and do what he loves best, be among the ordinary people and provide the best of himself, in words and deeds, to assist them. In this time of adversity, I want his grief-stricken family to know that they are in the constant prayers of many. Keep the faith and pray unceasingly. God answers prayers.
The healthcare system needs an urgent upgrade where it is made the envy of the sub-region. It will be so good that Dominica should be able to promote health tourism. Mediocrity must not remain our mode of operation , better MUST be done.

We do implore God’s healing power, grace n mercy upon Dr Sam. We lift him up in the power of the lamb and the blood of the testimony. May the healing unction of God rest on our brother. Be lifted up his soul…. Dominicans must start praying due to the turn of events in the recent past, its like the enemy the devil has raged war on the place. Therefore, people cannot be going on as if its business as usual… Break the chains in Jesus. First it was a lash on the brother head from no where, now its a very strange vehicular incident…. But The righteous shall prevail..
On another note, is n’t it time for Dominica to have a better health system? Thank God for Martinique but we need our own facilities because airlifting someone is not cheap.
What is going to happen to poooooor people who don’t have the means? Are they just gonnna die?
Dominicans tired go Barbados, Antigua, St Lucia, Martinique, especially Trinidad n more for health care which is way way expensive,IF not dey die…

Am praying for a full recovery for you DR.Sam. It’s also a shame that everyone who are seriously injured or needs some kind of medical help needs to go overseas for medical help. You would think in this day and age Dominica should be up to date with the other islands. This Fake DR DR really needs to go. I always pray God whenever I visit Dominica I hope never to fall sick, It’s really scary. Lord help my people.

we must talking & think even in America people fly from 1 state to the other to get medical treatment you can never have every thing you need to save lives take for instance the only place you can find a burn unit treatment hospital is in Galveston Texas at least top of the line people come from all over the world for treatment here so stop talking like Dominica have so much money that they can treat all illness .

Dare I say that notwithstandind dedicated docors we have totally inadequate A&E services in Dominica. Even stabilising a trauma victim, a priority, is a major issue. Instead of hosting a repentance concert at great expense we should get our priorities right and address basic, life saying needs first. Who should do the repenting I wonder?
Dr. Christian, I pray you remover soon and wil continue to service the community.

      December 3, 2018

So, you think that every trauma patient at the PMH gets flown out of Dominica for treatment? Today’s A & E at PMH is actually a great improvement on what we knew many years ago, even though it remains woefully inadequate.

While I am thankful that they were able to get Dr. Sam out of Dominica, though I hope it was not too late, I cannot help but wonder why do we always have to rush someone out of Dominica at a time when Skerrit has so much money giving to foreigners to help him win an election? This is not because of Maria because to me kerrit has failed to make the health and welfare of the citizens of Dominica a priority. I speak as a labourite though I have separated myself from the Skerrit party since after Erika, when it became clear to me that Skerrit is not a labourite and he is not freedomite either. I call his party SEP, which means Skerrit Evil party. He is just using the good name of our party to destroy Dominica. Imagine if what happened to Dr. Sam happened to an ordinary bare foot man
I say he would be still in Dominica and would probably dead by now . We need to put our well being and Dominica first and reject Skerrit b4 it’s too late. Can you imagine if we have a plane mishap with pmh?

“Imagine if what happened to Dr. Sam happened to an ordinary bare foot man.” It happens all the time. They are treated at the PMH or flown out using their private insurance or at the State’s expense. You simply do not hear of these stories.
