UPDATE: Three hospitalized after accident in Colihaut; drivers urged to wear seat belts

Three persons remain in hospital following a motor vehicle accident near Colihaut yesterday.

The accident occurred at around 4:30 pm when the driver of a 16-seater passenger bus, registration number HE428, lost control after hitting a puddle, slammed into a cliff and flipped over.

All four passengers on board were injured, while the driver escaped unhurt.

The driver, Elisson Casimir, a Hatian national, said that in his five years of driving in Dominica he had never had any experience like this as the bus slammed into the side of the cliff after swerving from side to side for about 200 feet.

“I was on my way to the airport from Roseau and I hit the water and the water pulled me and the bus was going left and right with me and I couldn’t do anything again, so it just hit the side of the mountain and it just turned over,” Casimir stated in explaining what happened.

Of the four passengers that were aboard, three were transported to the Princess Margaret Hospital where they remain nursing their wounds, and the other was taken to the Colihaut Health Center and subsequently released, having received less severe injuries.

Casimir thanked God for sparing his life and has urged all drivers that due to the uncertainty associated with driving, to always wear their seat belt.

“I thank God that nothing happened to me and I had my seat belt. And I encourage all drivers to wear their seat belt because if I didn’t have my seat belt, I’d be in the hospital right now,” he said.

THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPEN SINCE I WAS ON THE SEEN WHEN THE ACCIDENT TOOK PLACE. AS I SAY THANK GOD FOR THE LIVES THAT WERE SAVED. HOWEVER I MUST SAY THAT OUR EMT SERVICE NEED A BIT OF A BOOST, WE NEED MORE EMERGENCY VEHICLES TO BE AVAILABLE. I WAS SHOCK AT THE RESPONSE TIME BUT WAS LATER GIVEN AN EXPLANATION FOR THE DELAY.

GREAT DIVERSION FROM ACCIDENT TO COUNTRY AND RACISM, LETS IGNORE THE DRIVERS RESPONSE FOR A WHILE..AND LETS ALL IMAGINE THE FOUR PASSENGERS AND THE DRIVER DEAD, WOULD WE CONDEMN THE DEAD DRIVER, THE PUDDLE/WET ROAD?

IT WAS MERELY AN ACCIDENT, AND NO ONE DIED…CAUSE ACCIDENTS DO HAPPEN..AND THEY ALL LIVED TO TELL THE STORY..PRAISE GOD.

nationality is not the issue here. i appauld at the fact taht all the driver could thank god for was his life and the fact he was wearing his seat belt, with no mention or consideration for his passengers. I know the buses back home only have belts at the front and the passengers who pays his bill are left to dangle and fly off the bus in an accident. now to make matters worst he is calling on other drivers to wear seat belts!!
    SHAME ON YOU!!!

This accident was as a result of a phenomena referred to as ‘ hydro planing’ whereby the film of water in the puddle causes the tyre of the vehicle to lose traction between the pavement and the rubber.

Please exercise caution when driving on wet roads especially those with puddles.

Et puis nous tous sommes la même chose.. Dominicains, Haïtiens, Nord Américains, c’est la même chose..

Dominicans must be thankful for the contribution of the Haitian people. The Haitian people are contributing significantly toward the economy. Had it not been for the Haitian people our population could have been down to 40000. The last time I checked Dominicans are no different than Haitians elsewhere. I really wish our people would stop this ignorance .

Is it to say that when Dominican’s move to the US and elsewhere that they are not given the same privileges that we in Dominica offer to the Haitian Nationals, who by the way are a hard work people? Stop all the Hating. So long as the man reside on the island legally, he is entitled to whatever class drivers’ license, so long at he meets the legal requirement. This is a global village and Haiti happens to be a part thereof. Are we not talking Caribbean Single Market and Economies and Free Movement of Goods, Services and People. Haiti is in fact a member of this CARICOM that we speak of you know.

If you feel you are better than the Haitian why don’t you haul your behind back to Dominica; stop living in a crampped apartment. People like you make us Dominicans look bad. Go to a library and do some reading maybe you will understand your history much better than to come in here and refer to the Haitians as ” you people”. I am a Dominican but I don’t seem to understand the hatred and lack of love that some of you display towards some persons.

Do you know history? If you do not then ask someone to read a history book to you. ask someone about Toussaint L’overture. ask someone to tell you how many Dominicans migrated to Antigua, England, Guadeloupe, St Thomas, Canada and you name it. I would give you those who are very insultive an assignment to see how many Dominicans are in those various parts of the world.

You all need to respect the Father and love one another as he has loved us- all of us not Dominicans alone but all of manking.

Mind you, I don’t mind the thumb down but I say with no regrets away with the discrimination. I am sure those who do have all this negative comments do have someone of their family in some foreign country.

Having said all this, I praise and thank the Father for sparing the lives of those who were on the bus regardless of what nationality they are. We are one nationality in the eyes of the Heavenly Father.

I had to laugh at your last paragraph. Some people are observant and scrutinize those matters and you are one of them. :)

Yes! Why are the front and back tires different sizes? This is strange. There must be some explanation.

    • Lee Majors
      July 7, 2011

Damn! U are good if you are able to se different size tires in this photos.I personally did not observe it at first until you said so and i still can’t say after looking closely. You maybe have bionic eyes!
I learned a little physics in high school and some more at UWI and I know there is something called perspectiveness the elongation look of the bus can distort.let’s get te report. If you are correct,I’ll give you my degree.

    • Young Wisdom
      July 7, 2011

I has some experience in tires and it is very difficult to tell if the back tires are different or not, but because the back tires ARE BALD!! With no traction on the back to wheels, it is impossible to maintain control of the bus of the bus if it begins to slide. thats why bald tires should be in the front (cause you can always correct your steering) and fresher tires at the back to assist you in maintaining control of your vehicle.

      • whatever

Who said the accident was as a result of potholes? Have you seen the area of the said accident? Question is; why would a driver be speeding on a wet and muddy road to the point where he has to overtake?

    • Truth,Justice,Peace
      July 7, 2011

      @ observer

Are new roads not being constructed and in some areas also repaired by the Chinese? A country such as Dominica with a certain amount of rain, it is to be expected that this would result in potholes.
I reside in Canada. Potholes are a problem here as well. In the provinces where there is approximately 9 months of winter with heavy snowfall and then in at certain times of the year rain, in addition to heavy traffic with also trucks, the latter could eat up the roads. The exception is British Columbia which is milder than the other provinces and I am certain this Province also has potholes. Every year, from springtime the roads and highways need to repaired where necessary.
Have patience. Contact the department which is responsible for roads and safety and address this issue.
Potholes could cause accidents. We are told if we notice potholes in any area to report it to the authority.
Dominicans should be advised to do likewise. Even then, for safety reasons Dominicans should take it upon themselves to report them to the property authority.

I’M JUST STARTING THE FACTS AND VOICING WHAT MOST DOMINICANS FEEL. SO YOU CAN STOP WITH ALL THAT SCHOLASTIC, CAUSE I’M PROF. I-DON’T-GIVE-A-F***. HAVE A NICE DAY!!! :-D

Love and stop hate and be respectful. I am sure you have someone in some foreign country.
