Business man takes the lead in helping Christmas Eve flood victims

Anselmn Austrie receives cheque for first month’s rent from Kihmo Astaphan

The pained expression and the ‘silent tears of a helpless partner’ looking on as his pregnant girlfriend is lead away on a stretcher to the waiting ambulance, was what moved one onlooker to action in an effort to assist.

Like many people, Business man, Kihmo Astaphan, heard the news of the couple’s demise from the raging flood waters of a swollen river but he was not sure who the victims were. However, being Christmas Eve, the inquisitive security expert could not let the matter rest. He did some investigating and discovered that the man involved was one of the police officers at the Criminal Investigation Department( CID) with whom he had worked on some robbery cases. He quickly made his way to the scene and witnessed first hand, the unfolding tragedy.

Anselm Austrie’s basement apartment in Castle Comfort had been flooded after L’aivier Kanawi overflowed its banks and came crashing through in the wee hours of December 24, 2013. The angry, muddy water, from which he and his girl friend had to flee for their lives, destroyed almost all of their earthly belongings. Because of a blockage on the Citronier/Roseau road, it took many agonizing moments before Austrie’s girl friend who was five months pregnant and injured, could be transported to the Princess Margaret Hospital.

“For me hearing about it is one thing but seeing, is another thing…Christmas was basically the next day and how can you, one, go into the Christmas season homeless? You have something one day and in quick succession you’ve lost it. Not only that you have a pregnant girlfriend who is five months pregnant …and we sit down and eat ham and turkey and say life is good? Life is good for us not for everybody,” Astaphan stated. “Maybe the little tears I saw running down from his eyes when the ambulance services was putting his girlfriend on the stretcher… there was a pain in his eye that was what really threw me off,” he explained.

Astaphan said he was able to secure a one bedroom fully furnished apartment in Goodwill for EC$ 800 per month and through his company, Platinum Security, paid one month’s rent for the apartment on behalf of the victims. He said other business friends including Robby Tonge of First Domestic, Richard Stanton of Digicel, Jeffery Baptiste of LIME, Emile Depooter of Depex Clor Lab and Scotia Bank, each contributed one month’s rent, thereby securing the apartment for six months for the couple. In addition, Hugo Astaphan of Hara Agencies, donated EC$ 600 and Geoff Astaphan of H.H.V Whitchurch donated a food hamper.

Austrie says he will be forever grateful for the kindness showered on him and his pregnant girlfriend, who, according to reports, was told that she would be expected to remain hospitalized until April, when her baby is due.

It’s amazing not one day we as Dominicans can read something without throwing politics and negativity into the picture. The ppl who are positive keep it up as that’s how it should be, the people who are negative did you help or have you ever helped. Yes maybe the story should not about the businessman but the fact that someone received assistance. Dominica has been plaqued with negativity lately and although the percentage of negative comments amount to around 5% on this blog it shows and improvement. Negative ppl attract negative vibes and of course positive ppl attract positive vibes. Constructive critism of a topic should be encouraged but not bias negative comments. The fact is he received help to get him back on this feet, he received a furnish apt. the same day or next day of the incident, for that ppl want to crucify the team. I say GOOD job to all the business HERO’s and I will always encourage ppl to patronize your businesses. They didn’t have to as I suppose each day they have numerous request for assistance and they did without a twist of the arm. Keep it up.

Good job Kimmo. Skeritt says he loves the underprivileged, but during the emergency, not one person he met in Newtown and gave them money from his pockets. All help must come from the treasury, which in fact is the people’s money. According to a document distributed all over Dominica, it is alleged, he gave a young woman from the United Kingdom twenty four thousand pounds as a gift. I don’t want any Labor Party supporter to tell me Mr. Linton did not give any money himself. It is alleged, Skeritt authorized a lawyer, ee-zee door, to distribute to top ranking Dominicans and a Guyanese woman, in excess of one million dollars, I assume as a token of his appreciation, Mr. Linton does not have that kind of money.

  8. January 3, 2014

Hello and good evening my people. First I want to say that am happy Officer Austrie and his girlfriend is alright. Well what I learned from this article is the domination of our economy that the Astaphan family hold with their many business. Kimmo Astaphan own Platnum Security and he’s an alleged security expert because he sells security cameras. Hugo Astaphan with Hara Agencies and Geoff Astaphan with HHV Witchurch. They also own the supermarket adjacent to the Police station in Roseau and the Car Dealership. So my people how can the average person open a business and compete with this family.
Now Officer Austrie received a middle class salary base on his position therefore he’s not destitute and am certain other individuals are more in need because they don’t have a job. This type of donation should be made through his Police union not directly to the Officer because a good Attorney can bring such contribution up if said businesses are the complainant against his client. Also I can’t answer a thumbs down so please attach your post so I can reply.

Tony not all “Astaphans” belong to the. J Astsphan family, Kihmo, Hara n Geoff donated from their respective company’s, Geoff doesn’t own Whitchurch the Aird family does, he donated on behalf of his company not himself, Kihmo donated because he was on the scene n got a first hand glimpse of the peoples loss, hara donated becuz he was contacted by Kihmo who was spare heading the donations, he also contacted lime, first domestic, digicel, it’s all there in the article, so how does this become about the Astaphan family, if people have n they give u all slander them if they don’t u all crucify them, no point trying to please u all in fact it’s not about anyone but the victims who need help, what have u done?

      • January 5, 2014

        KASA.

Hello and good afternoon to you. The Astaphans are one of five prominent Famlies that hold sole proprietors contract for goods imported into Dominica. The five families control seventy five percent of the economy and they will prevent you from opening any meaningful business that would compete with any of their family owned business. I know because I inquired about opening a business I was told that I would have to purchase good from them because they hold the contracts to import such goods. I have no problem with Investigator/Officer Austrie receiving donations but business or individuals like Mr Astaphan shouldn’t make a donation directly to Officer Austrie. Ok Kasa would you feel confident if Officer Austrie arrest you base on a complaint from such business or individual that donated to him. How would you know that his judgement isn’t skewed at your expense which end up costing you your freedom. They should have made the donations not directly to him but to his a union. Mr Astaphan said he remember Officer Austrie from prior robbery investigations which moved him to act therefore is he rewarding him for pass investigations. I think the Internal Affairs Bureau of the Police Department should investigate such donations to reassure our citizens that Officer Austrie investigation will not be influence by such donations. I am just looking out for our citizens who don’t have the financial means like Mr Astaphan.

Courts and other companies need to show some empathy and erase the debt of the people who had their furniture damaged. How can a person pay for something they do not own? Or is there some insurance in place with these companies as they still own the items until they have been paid off.

Fellow Dominicans to the rescue. Good Samaritans. Words are insufficient to state how they alleviated his anxiety over what occurred to him and his girlfriend. He knows.
It is no easy matter to have such a thing happen to someone or people in general. Thank God they are alive.
I am a Dominican. No matter what there are some generous Dominicans who, if at all possible, would come to the rescue of those in need.
Thank you guys, businessmen who came to their financial aid. Blessed are those who help when especially in need of as in this case.
Our Lord will say to them: “For I was hungry and you fed Me. I was naked and you clothed Me. I was homeless and you assisted Me with a comfortable place to stay…You alleviated My heartache, stress and emotional suffering and set me at ease.
Know that He has taken note of their generosity. Your name is written in the Book of Life. Good deeds do not go unnoticed by the Lord. I have always stated and will always state, “It is better to do good…far better!”
Again, Our Lord said: “Whatsoever you do to the least of these, you do to Me.”
This is a message and a lesson for us all.
    God bless you!

This is such a heartwarming and inspirational Christmas story reminiscent of the old Christmas classic “Good King Wenceslas.” This is what happens when human beings take care of their fellow men just because it is the right thing to do. Hats off to Khimo Astaphan et al. May you be blessed.

      Tri State Beauty.

Hello and good evening to you. Well suppose Investigator Austrie arrest one of your family based on a complaint from Mr Astaphan. Then how can you be assured that he conducted a proper and honest investigation after what we leaned from this article. The donation should be made through his Police Union not directly to him.

These are real human interest stories, and I note the few comments so far. Had it been something scandalous or political, by now the number of comments would probably have topped a century!! Hats off to all those who contributed in a very tangible way. (Were the contributions form the businesses or from the individuals?) And let’s pray to God that the lady remains safe and has a successful, event-free delivery, even though she has to remain hospitalised until April.

There are true Hero’s out there and to take that kind of immediate action calls for recognition. From what I understand the officer was given a place to rest his head the very same day. Good job Kihmo and his numerous corporate partners. It’s shows that the corporate community can do great things when they are given the chance. These are the miracles I like to read about and it should not only be about the negative and politics. Government cannot do everything. Austrie I wish you all the best and hope your girlfriend feels better. May God bless The team that helped you and God’s Guidance to you and your new family.

    January 2, 2014

Very good, I applaud these people who came to the assistant of the victims of the storm. I am sure there are quite a few more good Samaritans out there that we did not hear of. This gesture reminds me of what Dominicans used to be like before hate politics came to Dominica. That is what we used to be. My mother always used to cook extra in case a hungry person pass by. I always remember that and do that to this day.

We used to help and not wait for people to ask us and especially not for what we would get in return. Our reward would always come from heaven we grew up knowing.

It gives me a warm feeling when I read things like that; certainly not what we have been hearing these past few weeks.

Good to know we can still be a caring society and recognize the need of others. Yes, We Care.

I wish the couple well. They have one less thing to worry about at the moment as she recuperates, thank to their benefactors and soon this well be a cherished memory, no matter how bad it may seem now and we know it is bad. Keep the Faith.

Life is good for us not for everybody,” Astaphan stated–News article

It is good to read that we still have human beings in Dominica, who is able to show compassion and caring–the two substance of Love–the Life that is of the “soul” of man in its awakening

May our God of Love pour His grace– the many blessings of Love–back to those people for they have loved, as God willed them to do so: “And this is the Love of God, that we obey His commandment” Another message of Life in the Holy Bible tells us: “God is Love and everyone who loves is born of God and knows Him”

I used that verse to point out the reason for my quote, from the news article, above.

It is unfortunate that we, as human beings, so often have a negative opinion of Life–of course that is when things are going bad for us, such as the case of that Astaphan person–the victim of an angry river and its flooding.

For him, and at that moment, Life is not good–but how true is that opinion. I say not true at all! For Life is from God, as the Scripture tells us above: God is Love; those who love are they who have Life and knows God–this Life of Love cannot be negative because Love is perfect just as God is perfect.

“Life” and the “existence in flesh and bones” are of two different concepts. For the body without the Spirit is dead. Jesus tells us: “That which born of flesh is flesh and that which is born of Spirit is spirit; “you must be born again”!

Without the Love of God in those who lend Austrie a helping hand–he would not have an apartment–rent free from his pocket–for the next 6 months

Those who help him did the work of Love–the Ways of God, who is Love–that is what does in its possessor.

Austrie says he will be forever grateful for the kindness showered on him and his pregnant girlfriend–News article.

That is good as well, but grateful to whom? Did God get the glory for the kindness that was showered unto Austrie? Well I did not read that from him.

But that is what God wants from us–The glory, which demonstrate in our words of thanks and gratitude; in our attitude of honor and praise–those around us must see or hear it from us.

For God is the One working through His chosen medium in this world for deliverance from the toil and strife in our lives–just as He did for the deliverance of Austrie and his girlfriend.

Did Austrie acknowledged that truth? That is the reason it will be easy for us to say “Life is not good for some people”–big mistake!

Jesus said: “I have come that they might have Life and that they might have more abundantly” I write the term with a capital “L” for I know that Life is from God–Jesus told us through His disciples: “In this world you have tribulations, but be of good cheer–I have overcome the world”.

God never told us that we would not suffer in this Life of Love and Holiness, but come what may, He is always with us in Life. To God be the glory! Or else we will never the goodness of Life in Love. Happy New Year to you all!

A really great benevolent act. Thank you Kymo for being a true role model. This DNO Jan 1st report was a great way to start the new year – just as the Chronicle front page story on the GROTTO was a graet one for their Christmas edition. BTW, I see the GROTTO donation boxes and tins are still around for persons to donate to help complete and move the Homeless to a new more comfortable building. Let’s all do our bit, storm or no storm

Of course, they will assist him. It could be done privately among fellow officers. He will have to purchase necessities for lost items. He will have to prepare for the birth of their baby. Consider the cost of his girlfriend’s hospitalization. I wonder if he has sufficient insurance coverage. These require money as well.
