Agro processing facility for Belles

The Belles Famers Group has begun receiving funds to start an agro processing facility in the community located in the interior of the island.

Global Environment Facility (GEF), which looks at small sustainable projects in various rural communities around the world, has made a commitment of $US60,000 to the Belles Farmers Group which will go towards the project.

Parliamentary Representative for that community, Kelver Darroux, said an initial amount  of these funds has already been disbursed.

“The funds are to go towards the upgrading of the water facility in Belles and the construction of an agro processing facility. The farmers group has received an initial trench of EC$62,000 which will be used to purchase some of the items required to start the facility. The farmers groups have been very committed to ensuring the funds are put to good use,” Darroux said.

According to him, one or two 20 foot containers which will house the equipment for the agro processing facility will also be purchased.

Darroux said a variety of local produce will be processed at the facility. “Some of the crops that will be used will be dasheen, plantains and any others that the farmers desire,” he added.

Darroux noted that government is committed towards enhancing the lives of the famers in the Belles community.

Thank god this government is using some of that money given By the word bank for environmental projects development. I am not sure where else our government would get money cause our economy ran out of gas and there is no other refilling ration near by as Chavez is sick and the Chinese gave already met their objectives.

DNO, i think it is about time you create a mechanism whereby already taken handles cannot be duplicated or abused. This will avoid the nonsense that happens here, which you clearly have not picked up on.

DNO what is this agro-processing plant supposed to do? Are they making dasheen and plantain chips? Are they just bagging dasheen for export?

Up to now I don’t have a clue as to what that plan is supposed to do. Agro processing is too large a catch-phrase. Please eleborate.

    Thank you.

    ***NOT ONLY BELLES**

“Darroux noted that government is committed towards enhancing the lives of the famers in the Belles community”

I’m sure he wanted to say ..enhancing the lives for ALL farmers across DA of which the Belles community is a part of.

This will be good for all farming community as long as we are going to be serious and consistant with our efforts.
