General Manager of the Dominica Banana Producers Limited Errol Emmanuel says, government’s effort to develop an insurance policy scheme for Dominican farmers is a move in the right direction.
Agriculture Minister Matthew Walter announced that government is in the process of developing an insurance policy scheme for farmers, which he says is long overdue.
Emmanuel says the development of the insurance scheme could encourage more farmers to return to the industry.
“The report coming out of the symposium on the insurance and crop insurance for the OECS islands by the ministers of agriculture is in fact a welcome one. The fact that we are in the hurricane belt and as we see the number of active hurricanes seems to be on the increase, it is likely that either through some storms or hurricanes that the agricultural crops would get damaged. This is most times a risk that farmers have to bear and the only crop that has crop insurance is bananas. Plantains are very similar to bananas in terms of the physiology…” he said.
He said if the ministers of the OECS will get some level of insurance, it is a move in the right direction.
