Dominica Banana Producers Ltd changes its name

We are proud to announce that we have changed our company name from Dominica Banana Producers Ltd. (DPBL), to Dominica Agricultural Producers and Exporters Limited (DAPEX).

The name change is due to the significant expansion of our business activities which now includes the exportation of all agricultural produce and not just bananas as was solely done in previous years.

The name change should also be perceived as an acknowledgment of the trend that the banana industry has been through over the years.

The company will continue to operate in its current structure and your contacts will remain un-changed.  At the same time, we will change all our e-mail addresses to:

[email protected]
[email protected] – Luke Prevost, Chairman
[email protected] – Errol Emanuel, General Manager (Ag.)
[email protected] – Ava Gordon-Marie, Administrative Officer
[email protected] – Candia Joseph, Accountant
[email protected] – Rosemary Philbert, IT Supervisor
[email protected] – Nelson Simon, Brokerage Officer

As always, we will continue to serve you with the same devotion and quality which you have come to expect from us.  It will be a pleasure to do business with you in the future.

Sincerely
DOMINICA AGRICULTURAL PRODUCERS & EXPORTERS LTD.

The name change from Dominica Banana Producers Ltd. to Dominica Agricultural Producers and Exporters (DAPEX) Ltd. is timely and strategic. I believe that the name change will enable the company to focus not only of banana export but will now look at other crops with export market potential. It will also give the company the mandate to develop non traditional export crops and it is hoped that there will be new emphasis on agro-processing, especially the processing of fruit juices, pepper products, banana products for export. This also brings to light the need for improved agricultural research and development to create new opportunities for Dominican farmers and the need to promote the agricultural sector as a lucrative area for young people to work in. The need for the Dominica State College to review its agricultural training courses and to work more closely with Dominica Bureau of Standards, DEXIA, CARDI, the Ministry of Agriculture et al to ensure that Dominica development a sustainable export market while at the same time developing a strategic food security policy that is not only sustainable but responsible.

Finally isn’t time we get back into the production of limes/citrus, vanilla, coconuts, coffee, cocoa etc etc etc and their by-products and make DOMINICA THE FOOD BASKET OF THE CARIBBEAN it ought to be…Just some food for the soul.

There is no way the banana industry will see the glory days of the late 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s. Since the collapse of the LOME Convention there is no way small banana growing countries like Dominica can compete on the international market against multi-nationals like Dole or Chiquita. Hence the focus should shift from trying to keep the banana industry alive to other cash crops. The banana industry is dead, simple as that. Some days aback DNO carried a story that Bello was experiencing a serious shortage of raw food for processing. Raw foods that are being grown in Dominica. This is the perfect vacuum to fill in. I think this is where DAPEX should focus on.
