Farmers receive checks under Agricultural Emergency Response facility

Drigo said the grant is a short-term mobilization response to Maria

The Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with the AID Bank, has begun distributing checks to farmers and fisherfolks who were affected by the passage of Hurricane Maria.

This is being done under an Agricultural Emergency Response Grant funded by the World Bank to the tune of EC$18,817,400.

Those eligible in the north and west will begin receiving checks today, January 24, 2018.

In the north, checks will be distributed at the ministry’s regional office located at the One Mile Agricultural Station.

Those in the west will receive checks at the St. Joseph Community Centre.

See full table below.

Some 3,932 qualified farmers are expected to benefit from the facility.

Nine hundred commercial farmers will receive EC$10,000 each and 3,032 small commercial beneficiaries will receive EC$3,000.

Agriculture Minister, Johnson Drigo, described the grant as a “short-term mobilization response to the negative impact of Hurricane Maria to the farming community.”

“Farmers and fishers may have a ready source of funds to be used for the restoration of crops and livestock production and fishing operation,” he said.

He said the program will buffer “short-term loss of income” suffered by farmers and fishers.

Sometimes you have to wonder why people are so lacking in the common sense area. The Marigot Credit Union is right on the high way and the only operating credit union in the district. Why would you all want daily business to be disrupted when there’s other locations with enough room and less business? Tell me why everything has to be so political and controversial. For once we need to shut up and satisfy. We never satisfy as a nation. Even if God come now we will be crying about “why is so God choose to come??” Just hope a bus and go calibishie for allu money.

Me.. I doe care eh, my cousin in America is sending me a big house and some seed to start farming in my back yard…
But if those greedy materialistic ones who thinks of gold before God was given EC$18,817,400 each then they would not have said anything but shut their mouths and ask for another hurricane WOW WOW WOW. Then not question where that money came from…cause to some money falls from trees…they say Dominicans are strong people but I think that there’s more greed. When we understand what’s important in life we will learn to be satisfied…remember that god is watching us, every one on this island could have been washed away with only one man standing. We should not hate the americans and hate their biscuit…we need to thank god and pray more for greed is the weakness of to-many of us…

Hey Drigo how much of that are from passport sales? The campaign to reelect the one and only Skerrit has just been kicked into high gear and Drigo does not even know that.

Is it true that farmers who have a salary job will not be getting any grants no matter how bug their farm is or how much lost they got?

hey DNO admin, Can’t you all get the list of farmers that will be benefiting? or did the government give a detailed logistics as to how the checks delivery will be done? I its really sad how we lack proper communication for these kind of thing in our country.

I am so grateful to our beloved pm for giving me and my wife money so we can continue planting our lettuce. I am a big farmer so i received the $10000 and my son who has almost 10 beds of lettuce was also big so he get $10000 also. My wife only has a few pots with a few little bell pepper so i suspect that is why they only give her $3000. I am looking forward to the next disbursment for me to put down a bed of carrot.

This is an outrage and big time robbery. People who are farmers are not getting money or gettiing their worth of the money. I am so in amazment that the governmemt of dominica are doing this to their people. The farmers help build the country too. We cant even go to the botanical gardens to get what is suppose to be for us farmers, the empolyees at the garden more vex to give it to you. I have more than ten beds of lettuce, along with different vegetables and i know other farmers who are bigger farmers who should have gotten ten thousand or even some money. Then they telling you that a household can get all that money even if they are all farmers and now you hearing a entire household get $23000. That is wickedness. The government workers and their pull strings and who theey know taking more than they need and some arent even farmers but they getting sèeds, barrows and others to just sit down in their house and then they will sell it for an arm and leg.

With the exception of the Goodwill Constituency, all other locations, in terms of the payments to the farmers, will be made in the DLP Constituencies. Has the campaign leading to the next general elections began.

Good point . Marigot is and Wesley are much larger farming community than Calibishie. Why not use the Marigot credit union for the farmers of Marigot and Concord . Their is a branch in Wesley.

I totally agree with you. Why not distribute the funds all at once. What is up with this Monday for one, Tuesday for another and Wednesday whom ever is left? Things in Dominica always seem to be done so haphazardly.
