Livestock industry get $8M grant from Venezuela

Livestock farmers are set to receive assistance from an $8-million grant funded by Venezuela.

The grant is expected to go towards the construction of a European Union-certified processing facility in the Layou Valley.

Head of the Agriculture Investment Unit, Dr. John Tousaint, said that the facility will allow farmers to produce exportable products by offering technical and financial assistance.

“This program is a general program that takes care of all livestock and it will also look at production,” Toussaint said. “Presently everybody does their thing at the back of the yard or on their farms. Of course we cannot sell that anywhere because it is not produced in a sanitary manner. We cannot think of shipping or exporting to any country because they will not accept it. To do any business in livestock we need a proper facility to produce livestock products.”

He added: “As you know we import about close to $14 million of chicken and about $9 million of pork and pork products annually. The program involves providing technical assistance to the farmer as well as giving the farmer financial assistance to develop his farm.”

He said according to European Union (EU) standards, the manner in which crops are grown is critical and gave the assurance the plant will meet EU standards.

good idea but before thinking of producing for export purposes, lets first try to provide for our selves resulting in: 1. a reduction in the import bill(since we use these products daily)
2.a better final quality for export(since it was tried firstly on the people of the land)
    3. a deeper sense of nation pride and love(seeing that you have something of quality being exported from your country, i.e a Dominican product)

I hope these animal will be grass fed. at least the animals that run around in our backyard we know what we are eating.

It is nice to have development like this but i hope it is done properly. The meat industry do not have a good reputation. Every one should take a good look at the Documentry food Inc.I love my country dearly and only want the best for my people. it sound great but at what course on our health and the enviroment. Are they gonna be injected with Hormones to boost production, sprayed with red dye to make the meat look more Red or freeze blast.Brazil kids were developing before there time due to the hormones they injected in these animals. Where will they be exporting these meat.

Is there a demand for meat for the caribbean. Dont think only about the money but think about your health.

good move Dr Toussaint. This will reduce our dependence on all the hormone filled chicken and pork that some merchants like the one accross the roseau river bridge is selling ot us to feed our children and banking all the profits in his fat bank accounts in MIAMI.Also this move must be backed up by a (buy local) education drive. good luck with it all.

Good idea for the non-existent livestock industry in Dominica!!! The feed is another factor, we do not produce feed here – no animal nutrition research is being done whereby we could use our local products. So we are still dependent on the imported feed which may be loaded with the growth hormones and what else we don’t know. This is sad, because the cost of animal feed takes a big chunk in the farmers budget, ask the poultry farmers, those that sell eggs. Then again Dr Toussaint is the one given the responsibility of importing feed …….Go figure.

Another thing I have concerns about, when Venezuela gives us so much grant money, what do we have to give in return, or what have we given in return? Don’t get me wrong, I want to see the country develop, especially our agricultural sector but I have concerns about all these gifts, there must be a repayment if not in cash, it will be in kind. Are we willing to make the repayment?

It has been said: Not everyone that is good to you is good for you!! Be careful Dominica, do not make yourself too indebted to a particular person/institution…………….. They will own you!!

another step in the right direction. our food security is essential to our development and so many products we import that we can produce locally, let’s really make an effort and let this work. it’s long overdue.

So there must be a hidden agenda? St Lucia got all their goodies and look how they overtake us while we still in the dark ages. Let’s be happy for our country that it is moving into the 21st century. Dca is so far behind it’s not even funny. This has nothing to do with politics just love for my country. That’s how it works. Without help we can make it nowhere. Fact
