The Government of Dominica with assistance from the Chinese Agricultural Mission is in the process of constructing a modern Agricultural Station in the North of the island.
This project came about when the former station which was located in Hillsborough was severely damaged in 2011 by flooding.
The Hillsborough facility was then re-located to a property in “One Mile” Portsmouth.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture Eisenhower Douglas, in an interview with the Government Information Service (GIS) on Monday said the US $2.1-million state of the art agricultural station is expected to be ready by the end of July.
“We actually expect that the construction of that facility will be completed by the end of July. The facility is still under construction, and we are expecting to have an opening ceremony soon after, possibly in August. Based on the work going on there now we know that the facility will be ready,” Douglas confirmed.
He said the facility, when completed, will boast a modern green house among other amenities.
“The Green House that is being established there will be the most modern one in the English speaking Caribbean, and we will be able to provide a major boost to the agricultural secto,r” he said.
The new agricultural station will be equipped with state of the art agricultural equipment and technology which will be available for use by the island’s farmers.
if i remember clearly, back in the 60’s /70’s OneMile /Portsmouth had an agricultural station.wasn’t it this palace where EOLB worked before politics?i am just asking.
a state of the art greenhouse will provide a major boost to the agricultural sector….
Are they going to be propagating hybrid plants ? Will it function as a nursery ? Will it be manned by locals with the appropriate technical support attached ? Or will it be a Chinese enclave in the North ? …. P.S whatever happened with the coffee processing plant ?
We need one in the south GRANDBAY
While they ATTACKING we working!
With no feeder roads, no markets, high fertilizer cost, a state of the art agri station will boost agriculture like a state of the art Palace will boost tourism… what a shame.
The standard operation practice of this regime is to boast of project long before they are even started, so as to garner as much political mileage on a paucity of endeavors. It is rather intriguing to note that in this case almost a whole year after this secretive project started is only now they claiming is an ‘agricultural station’.
So who do they expect to believe that slimy story? It’s only after they got lot’s of pressure form the talk shows that they decided to redirect the intent.
U fellas dumb, u all just constructing and expect things to fall in place, economics don’t work that way, there must be a market, u all need to lower taxes and eaze the red tape in doing business then u will see a need without Govt help!
We welcome a modern agricultural station for the nortn, but who is the local authority supervising that fiasco that happening down there in Portsmouth, or is the local expertise and their knowledge of the area being ignored by the chinese contractors. Some of us pass there on a daily basis and see that top soil being thrown away and windbreaks being cut down. Those trees stood there for years providing a useful ecosystem service. Was all that necessary. I guess so… Oh I finally get it, after we cut down the trees which stood there for years serving as a wind shelter for crops grown in adjacent plots we gonna plant them back again and when we remove the top soil for planting we gonna use soiless medium.. A modern agriculture station.
…Nice to hear that… Cap…
excellent move. This is the way to go.
